Emma had woken up late—the first time this had happened since she first started the job. That initial lateness had been intentional because she’d wanted to get fired, but today, it was purely accidental.

She scrambled out of bed, rushing straight to the shower. Thankfully, she didn’t wear much makeup, so she quickly donned a simple white dress shirt. She frowned at the edges; she’d forgotten to iron it, and the fabric was slightly crinkled.

She cursed under her breath. She had been so tired

> **Author’s Note:** Well, I think we can officially confirm that Emma’s survival instincts are… questionable at best. I mean, who kisses their boss to avoid a building manager?! I hope you guys enjoyed this chaotic chapter—Jerry is definitely going to need a minute to process that one. What do you think his reaction will be in the next chapter? Total confusion or something more? Let me know in the comments!

  • The CEO I Insulted Is Now My Boss    60. CLEARING MISUNDERSTANDING

Saturday morning arrived with a pale gray sky, the kind of muted light that made the city feel quieter than usual. She pulled on a simple blouse and dark jeans, ran a brush through her hair, and took a taxi to the hospital. It had become a strange ritual over the past few days. She would go, sit beside Beth’s bed, talk to her about nothing and everything, and hope for a miracle. Even if Jerry wasn’t there. When she stepped into the ICU waiting area, she stopped short. The room felt different—warmer somehow, filled with the low murmur of voices. A woman was standing near Beth’s door, tall and elegant, with silver-streaked dark hair swept into a neat chignon. She wore a cream silk blouse and tailored trouser. Emma didn't know who she was but she was quick to guess because she lookes so much like beth .Mrs. Whitmore.Beside her, looking polished and composed in a camel trench coat, was Isla. She had her hand on Mrs. Whitmore’s arm, leaning in close, her voice soft and reassu

The apartment felt smaller than usual when Emma finally stumbled through the door. She kicked off her heels without bothering to put them away, let her purse slide off her shoulder onto the floor, and collapsed onto the couch with a heavy sigh. The ceiling stared back at her, blank and indifferent.Four days. Four days since the accident. Four days since she had woken up in Jerry's bed, made the worst decision of her life, and walked out. Four days since she had told the only man she had ever truly cared about that what they shared was a mistake. She pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes. Work had been a special kind of torture. Jerry had come back to the office three days ago, composed and professional, wearing his expensive suits like armor. He didn't glance at her. Didn't acknowledge her presence. He spoke to her only through emails and through Lucy. When she entered a room, he left it. When he needed documents, she left them on his desk and retreate

Emma woke to a ceiling she barely recognized—high, dark, unfamiliar. For a moment, she lay perfectly still, her mind blank, suspended in that strange space between sleep and consciousness. Then memory crashed over her like a wave. The hospital. The stairwell. Jerry. She turned her head slowly, and there he was—sleeping beside her, his features relaxed for the first time in what felt like an eternity. If someone had told her she would make out with her boss _soecifically Jerry she would have denied vehemently. He wasn't the kind of man who let his guard down easily. Even in sleep, there was a certain sharpness to his jaw, a weight to his presence that made the room feel smaller.Emma let out a slow, silent breath.*What have I done?*She pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes, trying to ground herself. It had felt inevitable in the dark—the grief, the need, the way he had held on to her like she was the only thing keeping him tethered to the earth. But in the cold, unfo

The sound of those words hung in the air between them like a beating heart. Emma watched Jerry's face in the dim light — the vulnerability, the hunger, the flicker of something deeper that he rarely let anyone see. And when she whispered back, *"Then have me,"* something shifted in him. For a heartbeat, Jerry didn't move. He just looked at her, his chest rising and falling in sharp, uneven breaths, like he was memorizing the exact shade of her eyes in the low light. Then his hand came up slowly, almost reverently, and traced the curve of her cheek. His thumb brushed across her lower lip, tugging it down ever so slightly. "You're sure?" he asked, his voice barely above a rasp. "I'm sure," Emma whispered. That was all he needed. Jerry lowered himself onto her, and the weight of his body pressed her deeper into the mattress. His mouth found hers again — not desperate this time, but deliberate. He kissed her like he wanted to learn every inch of her lips. His tongue swept against

It took another twenty minutes of gentle persuasion, but finally Jerry let out a long, exhausted sigh and nodded."Fine," he said, his voice hoarse. "But I'm coming back first thing in the morning.""Deal." Emma squeezed his hand. She called his driver, who was still waiting in the hospital parking lot, and within minutes they were sliding into the back seat of the sleek black car. The city lights blurred past the tinted windows as the driver navigated through the evening traffic. Jerry leaned his head against the seat, his eyes closed, his jaw tight. Emma watched him from the corner of her eye, unsure of what to say. When they finally pulled up to his house, the place was dark and silent. The staff had gone home hours ago."Go upstairs," Emma said gently as she helped him through the door. "Take a hot bath. Get comfortable. I'll fix you something to eat."Jerry looked like he wanted to argue, but he didn't have the energy. He just nodded slowly and disappeared up the staircase.Emma

When Emma finally got home, the apartment smelled like pizza and candle wax. Luan and Kristie were sprawled on the couch, half-empty plates in their hands. The TV was muted, but the closed captions were running Beth's story across the bottom of the screen. "Any news?" Kristie asked immediately. Emma shook her head, collapsing onto the armchair. "Nothing. She's still unconscious." "God," Luan said softly. "I barely knew her, but she was so sweet. At the party, she came over and asked if I was having a good time. Like, genuinely cared. She didn't have to do that." Kristie nodded. "Same. She made everyone feel welcome. It's so unfair." Emma pulled off her shoes and tucked her legs underneath her. "She's going to wake up. She has to." They sat in silence for a while, the weight of the day settling over them. Eventually, Emma pushed herself up and headed to the bathroom. "I'm going to take a shower," she said. "I can't think straight." "Take your time," Kristie called after her. "We
