“The Ex Returns”

I thought I had survived the first week. I had managed Chloe, navigated the mansion, and even avoided making any glaring mistakes in front of Cade. But peace, I quickly learned, was temporary.

That morning began like any other: the sun pouring through the tall windows, Chloe already absorbed in her drawing, and the mansion humming quietly around us. I had just finished preparing breakfast when the sound of the front gates echoed — louder than usual.

I frowned. Deliveries didn’t come this early. And visitors… well, I hadn’t expected any.

Cade entered the kitchen with his usual commanding presence, eyes scanning the space. “Someone’s arrived,” he said, voice low but precise. “I suggest you keep Chloe inside until I handle it.”

I nodded, heart racing. “Yes, sir.”

The doorbell rang again, and with it, a voice that made my blood run cold.

“Lila Monroe.”

I froze.

The voice was smooth, familiar, dripping with charm and arrogance. I had heard it before — countless times — in a life I had tried to leave behind. My stomach churned as I turned slightly, just enough to see her.

Vanessa.

Cade’s expression didn’t change, but I caught a flicker of recognition — subtle, almost imperceptible — in his eyes. Vanessa was stunning, the kind of woman who could command attention without trying. Her dark hair shimmered under the sun, her heels clicking with purpose across the marble floors. And that smile… the one that was meant to disarm everyone, everyone except me.

“I didn’t expect to see you here,” I whispered, voice trembling.

Vanessa’s eyes sparkled with something I couldn’t place — amusement, or malice, maybe both. “I could say the same about you, Lila,” she replied smoothly. “Quite the change… from the small flower shop to this mansion. Impressive.”

I clenched my fists under the table. “What are you doing here?”

She tilted her head, eyes narrowing slightly. “Oh, I’m just checking in. Making sure everything — and everyone — is where it should be.”

Cade’s deep voice cut through the tension like a blade. “Vanessa. This isn’t a social call. State your purpose or leave.”

Vanessa’s smile didn’t falter. “I’m merely concerned about Chloe,” she said, with an exaggerated softness. “I want to ensure she’s… comfortable and well taken care of.”

My chest tightened. Her tone was saccharine, but I could sense the threat beneath it. She wasn’t here to visit; she was here to interfere, to test me, to see if I was weak enough to break.

Cade’s eyes locked onto Vanessa, gray and unflinching. “You’ll have no involvement with Chloe beyond what I approve. Any attempts to disrupt her routine, and you’ll leave immediately.”

Vanessa laughed softly, a musical, poisonous sound. “I wouldn’t dream of overstepping, Cade. But… the girl has potential. Don’t crush it.”

I didn’t like the way she looked at me — like she was studying, judging, calculating exactly how much I could handle before I faltered.

After Vanessa left, the mansion felt heavier. The light outside didn’t reach me the same way, and Chloe seemed smaller, more anxious.

“Who was that?” she asked, tugging at my sleeve.

I hesitated, kneeling beside her. “Someone from my past… someone who isn’t very kind.”

Chloe’s small hand squeezed mine. “Will she hurt us?”

I swallowed. “No. I… I’ll protect you, Chloe. Always.”

Her eyes softened, and she nestled closer to me. For the first time since the mansion, I felt a tiny spark of strength. Maybe I wasn’t completely powerless here. Maybe I could fight, even against people like Vanessa.

Later that afternoon, I found myself in the library, trying to focus on Chloe’s lessons. My mind, however, kept drifting back to Vanessa. Her presence was like a shadow that lingered in the corners of my mind. I could feel her eyes on me, even though she was long gone.

Cade entered silently, standing behind me. “She’ll test you,” he said, voice low. “Vanessa… she knows weaknesses, exploits them. Do not let her.”

I flinched. “I… I won’t.”

His hand brushed my shoulder — brief, almost accidental, but it made my stomach flutter. “Remember,” he continued, voice softer now, “strength isn’t just about resisting others. It’s about protecting what matters. Don’t forget that.”

I looked up at him, gray eyes locked with mine, and for a moment, I forgot everything else. Vanessa. Chloe. The mansion. The contract.

Just one glance from Cade, and the world shifted.

Dinner that evening was tense. Chloe poked at her food, still shaken by Vanessa’s visit. I tried to keep the mood light, telling her stories and making her laugh in small bursts. It helped, just a little, but the shadow of Vanessa lingered like smoke in every corner.

After Chloe went to bed, I lingered in my room, my thoughts racing. Vanessa had a reason for showing up. She hadn’t come just to intimidate me — she had plans, schemes, and I was certain Chloe was part of them.

I opened the desk drawer in my room to find the note from the hallway again. I hadn’t looked at it since the day before. The elegant handwriting stared back at me, warning me once more:

“Be careful, Lila. Not everyone here wants you to succeed.”

My hands trembled. Vanessa’s visit had confirmed it — there were people actively working against me in this mansion. My life, already precarious, was about to become even more dangerous.

And as I stared out at the sprawling gardens beyond my window, I realized something terrifying:

I wasn’t just surviving for myself anymore. I was surviving for Chloe. And someone was trying to take her away from me.

But who? And how far would they go to break us?

Secrets UnveiledI didn’t mean to find it.I wasn’t snooping, I wasn’t even thinking about Vanessa or her schemes—just carrying a stack of Chloe’s coloring pages to the small storage cabinet near the security office. But as soon as I opened the drawer, a thin folder slid forward as if pushed by an invisible hand.A red tab.A single word: Confidential. My heart stopped.I shouldn’t have touched it. I knew that even before my fingers closed around the file, but curiosity wrapped around my wrists and pulled.Inside were printed screenshots—emails leaked from inside the mansion. Some were small things: Cade’s schedule, kitchen supply lists, Chloe’s class timings. But one page made my pulse spike.Leaked custody hearing notes. Not public. Not harmless. And definitely not something anyone should have access to.The worst part wasn’t that the documents existed. It was the signature on the bottom corner of one of the pages, faint but visible.A sweeping letter. A curved flourish.Someone in

VANESSA’S GAMESI should have known today would go wrong the moment Cade said, “It’s just a small luncheon. You’ll be fine.”Nothing about Cade Ashford’s world was ever small. The mansion was buzzed with activity from early morning — staff carrying silver trays, florists adjusting centerpieces, Victor issuing orders like the estate was preparing for diplomatic warfare. Chloe twirled around the front hall in a pale blue dress, the closest thing to excitement I’d seen from her since Vanessa’s reappearance.Me? I was a bundle of nerves wrapped in a dress I borrowed from the mansion’s wardrobe room. Cade said he wanted me close today. “Visible,” he added with that unreadable tone. I didn’t ask why. I didn’t need to. After the note in his office and Vanessa’s little message on the security camera, being visible meant being protected.Or at least that’s what I told myself. The luncheon wasn’t even five minutes in before I felt eyes on me. Guests, staff, strangers. Some curious, some judgin

HEARTBEATS AND HESITATIONSI never thought the sound of a child breathing could steady my heartbeat and shatter it at the same time. But there I was—sitting on the floor beside Chloe’s bed, watching her sleep while Cade leaned against the window, arms folded, gaze focused on the night beyond the glass like he was waiting for the darkness to make its next move. The mansion felt different tonight.Still. Watching. Listening.Every lamp glowed low. Every corridor held an echo. Every creak felt like a threat breathing against the walls. But it wasn’t the fear tightening my chest. It was him.The way Cade’s presence filled the room effortlessly. The way he kept glancing at me when he thought I wasn’t looking. The way he stood close enough that I could feel the tension in him—coiled, guarded, simmering under the surface. And the way his voice, quiet and deep, rolled over the room when he finally spoke.“You didn’t eat dinner.”I stiffened. “I wasn’t hungry.”“That’s not an answer.”I looke

THE HIDDEN THREATI didn’t expect fear to have a sound, but it did.It was the little click—the soft, almost harmless click—of Chloe’s bedroom door as I pushed it open that morning. The room was quiet, filled with the faint scent of lavender shampoo and the sunshine filtering through her lace curtains. Her tiny shoes were lined neatly by the dresser. Her plush bunny sat on the pillow, its floppy ears arranged like someone had tried a little too hard to make it look “normal.”Something felt… off.I crossed the room slowly, my slippers brushing against the warm carpet. Chloe was downstairs already, having breakfast with Rosa. She had left her school folder on the bed earlier—bright purple with glitter hearts. Now, it wasn’t there. But that wasn’t what made my stomach tighten. Her window was unlocked.I froze.I always locked her windows. The security team checked them, too. And last night, I remembered very clearly—Cade himself had locked it. I had watched him twist the latch after tuc

CLOSE QUARTERSI didn’t expect a simple hallway to feel like a shifting point in my entire life, but as I followed the housekeeper up the mansion’s grand staircase, that was exactly how it felt. Each step seemed to echo louder than it should, carrying the weight of a decision I never imagined making: moving into a suite closer to Cade Ashford. My employer. My headache. My source of accidental butterflies. And now… my neighbor.“Here we are,” the housekeeper said, her voice gentle as she opened a door on the east wing. “Mr. Ashford chose this one specifically.”Of course he did.The room was beautiful — too beautiful for someone who once slept on a mattress with springs that poked through the fabric. The suite was softly lit, decorated in warm creams and delicate gold accents, with a private balcony overlooking the tranquil garden. Everything about it whispered luxury. But the detail I noticed first? The door on the right side of the room.A connecting door.Locked. But still there.O

“The Contract Shifts”I had just finished tucking Chloe into bed, her small hand gripping mine like a lifeline, when Cade appeared in the doorway of her room. The dim light from the hallway cast sharp shadows across his face, and even in that half-light, he looked… impossibly commanding. My heart did that ridiculous little flip that it only did around him.“Is she asleep?” he asked, his voice low and careful.“Yes,” I whispered, trying not to sound as nervous as I felt. My chest was fluttering for reasons that had nothing to do with fear.He stepped closer, and I caught the faint scent of cedar and something masculine I couldn’t name. My pulse went haywire. “Good,” he said, tilting his head slightly. “We need to talk about… everything.”I followed him silently to the study, every step heavy with anticipation. The door closed behind us, and suddenly the mansion felt impossibly huge, yet the space between us unbearably small. He perched on the edge of the leather chair, leaning forward
