I watched Emily pace back and forth across the waiting room for what felt like the hundredth time. Her face was pale, her hands were shaking, and I could see the panic building in her eyes with every passing minute.

Six hours. The boys had been in surgery for six hours, and we hadn't heard a single word from the doctors.

Lily was curled up in a chair, pretending to sleep, but I could tell from her breathing that she was awake. She was scared, too, just trying to be brave for her mother.

I stood up and gently caught Emily's arm as she walked past me again. "Emily, please. You need to sit down and rest."

"I can't," she said, her voice tight with fear. "I can't just sit here and do nothing while my son is in there..."

Her voice broke, and I pulled her into my arms. She resisted for a moment, then collapsed against me, her whole body trembling with fear.

"They're going to be okay," I whispered into her hair. "Both of them. They're strong boys."
