Meanwhile, Gwen sat staring at her phone, hesitating. On screen was her chat with William.

The latest issue of the magazine was a massive hit, and the editor-in-chief had specifically reminded her to thank him.

After some thought, she typed, “Are you busy?”

But before she could hit send, her phone lit up with an incoming call from Chris.

When she answered, his voice came through with a trace of concern. “I heard you had some trouble the other day. Was it serious? Are you okay?”

Gwen was caught off guard. “How did you find out?”

“The magazine’s blowing up, and you were the one who interviewed William. My dad saw the article and asked me when that piece was scheduled to publish.

“I didn’t explain clearly, and it made him suspicious. He ended up contacting your publication directly…”

Chris paused, then added, “Long story short, it all kind of snowballed. That’s how I found out you weren’t at work yesterday.”

“I’m fine. I’m already back at the office today.”
