Prison? Did I hear Sterling right? But that made no sense. My parents may have not been perfect people but there was no way that they were criminals.
“I don’t understand…” I said under my breath. “What do you mean by that, Sterling?” I asked him as he walked away. “I’m talking to you!” I stopped him by holding his arm.
He stopped and then looked at me. A small smile played on his rosy pink lips. “Heather,” He began, his voice breathy. “I really don’t want to look like the bad guy here. So please, I’m begging you. Sign those papers.”
“What did my parents do?”
He gently removed my hand from his arms before responding. “I really want to tell you, but I can’t. At least not now.” His eyes twinkled with mischief. “I’d suggest you ask your parents and if they don’t tell you, then trust that they love you and that signing those papers would be the best for your family.” He flashed me a small smile and then walked off.
I stood in the living room as I tried to process it all. If this was not about money, then what was it about? This all just became even more complicated. And what was that talk about prison? Did my parents do something that could land them behind bars?
Even though the question of where Samuel was and why he left, had been answered, there were still more questions rising in my mind. Questions that my parents knew the answer to.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called my mother as I walked out of the living room, towards the front door. After a few seconds of ringing, she did not pick up my call. But I was not giving up.
Giving up was not something that I did often.
I swung the front door open and walked outside. The scenery was lovely and the warmth from the sun was evident and soothing. There was also a cool breeze swirling in the air.
“Come on, pick up the phone,” I said to myself as I called my mother once again. It took about three to four rings but this time she answered.
“Hello, darling. I’m sorry, I was in a meeting with a client. We just got done. Is there anything wrong?” Her voice was smooth.
“Uh, yeah. Something is very much wrong. Can you please tell me why the man I am supposed to get married to just told me that if I don’t follow through with the whole thing, you and dad are going to end up behind bars?”
My mother released a nervous laugh before taking a few more seconds to reply. “Can we, uh, can we discuss this another time? I’d rather for us to talk about it in person and not over the phone.”
“Another time? I am supposed to sign the contract for the marriage by tomorrow. I don’t have much time.” I slowly paced the compound.
“And you’re going to sign it. Sign the papers and your dad and I would be on our way to London to tell you the truth about it all.” Her voice was surprisingly filled with a hint of care and concern.
“When I sign it, there is no going back. I would be married to the guy for the next four years,” I said in frustration.
“Look, sweetie. Time goes by in a blur. Just be the perfect wife and maybe love would show up later. Who knows?”
“Wha–what? I don’t want love to show up later.” I breathed out a short sigh. I felt a strong need to tell her about Samuel. And why not? I did not have much to lose anymore. “I’m not looking for love. I found love two years ago,” I blurted out, and anxiously waited for her reply.
“You’re joking, right?” She laughed.
“His name is Samuel and we have been dating for two years. I didn’t tell you guys about him because you two would not have accepted him.”
“And why do you say that?” The sound of passing cars underlined her voice through the phone speakers.
“Oh, I don’t know. Because I thought he was a commoner.” I shrugged as if she could see me. “But I just found out that he belongs to one of the richest and most well-known families in the western world. He’s a Willaim.”
My mother gasped lowly. “A William? Does that mean that he’s related to the man you’re about to get into a contract marriage with?”
“He’s his brother, mom. His freaking brother.” I sighed. “Things are really complicated and confusing. You and dad keeping things from me certainly do not help.”
A few seconds passed by and I waited to hear her say something. “Heather, my love. Sign the papers and we would be in London to explain it all to you before the week comes to an end. Okay? Please…”
I blinked rapidly for a few seconds and then nodded as if she could see me. “Fine. Bye.” I then took the phone from my ear and ended the call. I placed it in my pocket and breathed out a long sigh.
I felt two emotions clashing on my insides. One of them was a relief for finally telling my mom about me and Samuel’s relationship which I had hidden from them for the past two years, and the other emotion was anxiety because of what I was about to get myself into by signing those documents.
I had not much of a choice. It was either signing those documents or letting my parents go to prison for whatever the hell they had done. I could not wait to hear them explain to me what the Williams have against them.
They had always put up this perfect act while making me follow in their footsteps whether I wanted to or not. They were good parents but it was clear as day that many of their actions were toxic.
I ran my hand through my hand and then headed back inside the mansion. As I approached the house, I heard a car honk coming from the front gate. I turned in the direction of the noise and noticed a sleek silver Cadillac.
The car screamed luxury. The automated gates were open and the car was driven into the compound. I did not recognize it so I knew that it did not belong to anyone that I knew. Also, the windows were tinted so I could not see who was driving.
The front door opened as the driver got down from the car. It was Sterling coming from inside the house. He walked past me and approached the person who was getting out of the fancy car.
The person that got down was a girl my age. She had wavy blonde hair and looked like a model. I watched Sterling embrace her, reaching for her buttocks in the process.
When they broke the hug, the next thing that came was a passionate kiss that they were not at all shy to share with my viewing eyes.
I watched them longer than I should have. Finally, they broke the kiss and Sterling began to lead the girl my way. I saw that as my cue to get my behind in the mansion. I was a bit confused though. Why was Sterling kissing and groping a girl when he and I were supposed to be getting into a legal and binding marriage agreement? But I guess he had the freedom to do what he wanted, I had not signed the papers yet. When I touched the doorknob and turned it so I could open the door, I got stopped by the voice of Sterling. “Hey! Heather, wait up!” I breathed out a sigh and removed my hand from the doorknob. I then turned to face them. “Why?”The girl next to him chuckled. “She’s a cute one,” She said in a low tone to Sterling but I heard her all too well. “I want you to meet my girlfriend, Patty. We have been dating since high school.” Sterling gestured to the blonde. I forced a smile even though I felt a bit awkward. “Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Heather.” “Nice to meet you too, dear.”
“Sign them. Sign the papers.” Samuel spoke in a monotone. I could not tell whether he was disappointed or sad. He sounded almost like a robot. “But then your brother would take it all from you.” He chuckled without. “Heather, I think that’s just karma. When I had it all at my fingertips, I ran. Now that I want it all back the most, it is the furthest away.” He sniffled dryly. “So choose your parents and don’t worry about me. I would still find a way.” I let a few seconds fall before speaking. “And how about us? How about our relationship? What would become of us? Because if I sign those papers, I would be stuck in a four-year contract and I don’t think I would be allowed to see you.” “Of course, we would see each other. Sterling has a girlfriend and would no doubt keep seeing her. No why shouldn’t you be allowed to see me? It all just has to be hidden from the public’s eyes; to keep the illusion of the marriage going.”“Okay then. I guess that’s it, huh?” Yup,” He replied, poppin
“Can we please have our seats so we can start?” A man spoke, his voice was a bit raspy. He was dressed in a business suit too. He was sitting next to Sterling and Samuel’s parents. I sat down next to Sterling behind the conference table. As Patty was about to sit down on the right side of Sterling, his mother spoke, “No, no, dear. Come sit over here. Sterling should not even be seen with you.” Her tone was cold. From that brief interaction, I could tell that she did not like Patty. And I don’t think Sterling’s dad did too because he was giving her some glares. She listened and walked to the other side of the table and sat next to Sterling’s mother who kept a careful eye on her. On the table lay three folders that had documents stacked in them. The stack did not look big though. “Hi.” Sterling’s mother waved to me as she flashed me a smile. She looked excited to see me. I smiled back in response, of course. “So to begin, I would like to introduce myself.” The man with the raspy v
The scene before me was not something that I would be forgetting anytime soon. My throat was dry like sand on a hot summer day and my eyes bulged from shock. Sterling had to pull me in his arms for me to notice that I was screaming. There on the bed lay Patty. But she was not okay. She was far from okay. She was dead; maybe even murdered from the way she looked. There was a huge kitchen knife in her chest and another one in her stomach. Tears blinded my vision for a few seconds before clearing. The sheets on the bed were soaked with blood and the room smelt like death. It was very traumatizing for Sterling and me. Soon, guards rushed into the room. They were all shocked as we were and tried their best to contain the situation. One of them called 911 and the other few entered the room with us and closed it for privacy. “Ho–how?” My voice broke. I was still sobbing. “She was okay. How did this happen?” I did not even recognize my own voice. Sterling released me from his arm and wal
I was sitting in a five-star hotel room a few blocks away from the mansion. I was not going to stay in that house again. I was not going to allow myself to be a target for any psycho. I did not need that kind of drama in my life. I did not even know self-defense, which made me even more nervous. I mean, my parents recommended that I take them a few years back but I was stubborn and told them no. Now I was lowkey regretting why I did not take those classes. I had told no one where I was except Samuel and I told him to tell no one. I did not need anyone trying to convince me otherwise to stay in this country or to stay married to Sterling. Whatever they had against my parents, I was sure we could figure something out. But putting my life in danger did not seem appealing. I heard a small knock on the door and I stood up from the bed and placed the tea that I was drinking on the coffee table. When I reached the door, I looked through the peephole and I saw Samuel. He was alone. I unl
“Yes, now we barely have enough to keep ourselves going but because of this marriage, our sins could be forgiven and everything could be made right again.” My mom sounded so sure. “It would all work out for our good if you just stay married to Sterling for the four years.” I scoffed lowly. Hold up. Let me get this right. You two got con by someone and lost a billion dollars just after you had merged with the Willaims?” “Yes, Heather. It’s simple as that,” My dad said numbly. He stood to his feet and placed his hands in his pocket. “We got conned. I mean, it has never happened to us before, but I guess there is a first time for everything.” “No. I feel like you two were set up.” I stood to my feet. I glanced at dad and a look crossed his face that disappeared just as quickly as it came. “By the Williams.” My mom laughed lightly. “Oh, please darling. Seriously? Why would one of the richest families in the world want to con us? Yes, a billion dollars is a lot but they surely have mor
When I was at the dining table, I reached for a glass of water and drank half of it down. I released a satisfied sigh when I was done and placed the glass back on the table. I glanced at Sterling when I began eating and he was just playing with his food. I cleared my throat lowly and then asked, “So, um…how are you holding up?” “Hmm?” He looked up at me as if I had just pulled him from another world and had no idea what was going on. “Oh, yes.” He nodded when he realized what I said. “Well, um…I’m trying, I guess.” He flashed me a sad smile. “I don’t think I ever told you sorry about her. About Patty.” I scooped some eggs and placed them in my mouth, chewing as I waited for a reply from him. “Oh, it’s okay. You never really knew her.” He chuckled very lightly and continued to play with his food. “And I don’t think you liked her either, so no worries.” He made a small sound with his mouth. “I–” I wanted to argue that he was wrong but that would be stupid because it was true, I cer
Sterling allowed me to enter the room first, so I walked in, followed shortly by him. The detective led us to the seats in front of her desk and then went around before sitting in her comfortable-looking chair. I sat down in one seat and Sterling sat down in the other one. It felt like we were here for a doctor's appointment and like the detective was the doctor that was either about to give us good news or bad news. “How are you two keeping up?” She purposely stared at me for a second longer, making me feel a bit uncomfortable. I had a small feeling that she thought that I was Patty’s killer and that I was covering it all up by bringing up Sterling’s ex. Or I was just overthinking since I could not obviously read her mind. “Uh, I’m hanging in there.” Sterling forced a smile and then glanced at me to say something. I pressed my mouth into a straight line before speaking. “I’m not okay, but I would be,” I said truthfully. They both stared at me for a few seconds longer than
