Chapter 37: The Shadow's Edge

At 3:15 AM, the Gulfstream G650 touched down on the private tarmac at O’Hare International Airport under a dark, rain-slicked sky.

The calm vacation Nathan had promised was dead before their boots hit the pavement.

A convoy of four black armored Escalades sat idling on the runway, their headlights cutting through the heavy fog. Chief Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, surrounded by eight heavily armed private security operatives wearing non-descript tactical gear.

As Nathan guided Isabella down the air stairs, his hand rested heavily against the small of her back, his body positioned to absorb any potential sniper fire from the perimeter trees.

"Report, Miller," Nathan commanded, his voice dark and clipped as they stepped onto the wet tarmac.

"The Oak Brook estate is on total Level-Zero lockdown," Miller reported briskly, falling into step beside them. "We've doubled the perimeter patrols and deployed automated motion sensors along the lakefront. Miss Elena and Young Master Alexander are asleep in the panic suite with four personal bodyguards outside their door."

Isabella slid into the back seat of the reinforced Escalade, smoothing the lapels of her dark coat. "Did the Antarctic relay signal leave any digital footprint on our flight servers?"

"Our cyber team spent the last three hours isolating the packet," Miller said, taking the front passenger seat as the convoy accelerated out of the airport grounds. "It wasn't a standard satellite hack, Chairwoman. The transmission bypassed the Federal Aviation Administration's encryption by using an old NATO diplomatic frequency."

Nathan pulled Isabella into his side the moment the doors locked, his arm wrapping around her waist with possessive tightness. Isabella rested her head against his shoulder, her mind racing through the corporate and political implications.

"NATO diplomatic clearance," Nathan gritted out, his storm-grey eyes fixed on the rain streaming down the tinted window. "That confirms it. The Sovereign Council isn't a mere shadow cartel of bankers like Aegis. They hold seat privileges in European parliaments and American intelligence directors."

"They wanted us to know they can touch us anywhere," Isabella murmured softly, turning her face into Nathan's neck, inhaling the crisp scent of his cologne mixed with rain. "They want us paranoid. They want us defensive."

Nathan turned his head, his lips pressing firmly against her temple, his grip on her waist bruising in its intensity. "Let them try. Every hand that reaches for you or our children gets cut off at the wrist."

---

By 4:30 AM, the convoy swept through the massive wrought-iron gates of the Oak Brook estate.

Inside the primary study, the air was cool and filled with the scent of aged mahogany and rain. Isabella stood in front of the grand wall monitor, having changed into a tailored charcoal silk blouse and dark trousers, her hair pulled back into a tight, practical ponytail.

Nathan stood behind her, his jacket removed, his gun shoulder-holster exposed over his white dress shirt.

On the screen, a sophisticated decryption algorithm was breaking down the data packet transmitted during their flight.

"Look at the tertiary code embedded in the transmission header," Isabella pointed to a line of red hexadecimal values blinking on the screen. "It’s an old French legal registration key from 1898."

Nathan leaned down, his chest pressing against her back as he looked over her shoulder, his hand coming to rest on the edge of the mahogany desk beside her. "The Valmont Registry. The oldest private land trust in Western Europe."

"My father's birth mother was a Valmont," Isabella whispered, a sudden cold realization washing over her. She turned around within the circle of Nathan's arms, looking up into his dark eyes. "Richard didn't just build Reed-Hayes with American capital, Nathan. He used his mother's ancestral trust in Paris as the initial collateral."

"Which means the Sovereign Council doesn't just want to destroy Reed-Hayes," Nathan realized, his jaw clenching with lethal clarity. "They claim ownership of the underlying bloodline trust that founded it."

Before Isabella could reply, a sharp, metallic chime echoed through the study.

Chief Miller walked into the room, holding a heavy, black leather dispatch case stamped with a wax seal displaying the double-headed dragon.

"A private courier delivered this to the front gate three minutes ago," Miller said, his face grim. "He drove away in a vehicle displaying diplomatic plates from the French Embassy."

Nathan stepped forward, taking the case. He bypassed the mechanical lock using his tactical blade, flipping the leather flap open.

Inside lay a single document crafted from thick, antique parchment, written in elegant calligraphy, and an encrypted glass data drive.

Isabella picked up the parchment, reading the opening lines aloud:

"To Isabella Reed-Cole, fake heiress of the House of Valmont:

By order of the Grand Sovereign Tribunal in Geneva, your controlling equity in Reed-Hayes Corporation is hereby challenged under the Ducal Succession Act of 1898.

You have seventy-two hours to surrender forty percent of your voting shares to the House of Valmont, or your father's legacy will be exposed as an act of international grand theft, and your family's global assets will be frozen by the International Court of Justice."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the study.

Nathan's eyes burned with a terrifying, predatory rage. He snatched the parchment from her hand and tore it into shredded pieces, tossing them onto the floor.

"They're trying to use ancestral legal loopholes to strip your birthright," Nathan snarled, his voice dropping into a low, murderous roar. "They think they can play legal chess with me?"

"Seventy-two hours," Isabella said softly, her hazel eyes glittering with a fierce, brilliant light that matched his own. She stepped toward Nathan, resting her hands against his broad chest. "They gave us three days to bow down."

Nathan wrapped his arms around her, pulling her flush against him, his lips hovering an inch from hers. "What is your order, Madam Chairwoman?"

"Book our private flight to Paris for tomorrow morning," Isabella declared, her voice ringing out with absolute, regal power. "If the Sovereign Council wants to use ancestral laws against my father's memory, we are going to march straight into their sanctuary and burn their tribunal to the ground."

Nathan's dark smirk returned—dangerous, possessive, and wildly lethal. He leaned down and captured her lips in a fierce, intoxicating kiss that sealed their next target.

The global war had arrived at their doorstep, but the Chairwoman and her General Counsel were ready to conquer Europe.
