Chapter 4

작가: Six Dollars
The next day, the shipping group threw a small docking banquet for Emery. Gerald called first thing in the morning and ordered me to attend.

"If you don't show up, how does that look for Emmy?"

"Is she bringing Noah?" I asked.

Gerald lost his patience. "Noah is a business partner; of course he'll be there. Stop being so petty."

So, I went. I wore a black suit and left my wedding ring at home.

The dinner was held at the hotel by the docks. When I walked into the private dining room, Noah was sitting to Emery's left in a white suit with the wave-patterned watch on his wrist.

The cufflinks and tie clip were there too, the full set on display.

Gerald spotted me and waved me over immediately. "Corbin, come on. Sit over there by the door so the servers can get through."

Emery didn't object.

Noah looked up and gave me a faint smile. "Mr. Wilder, don't get the wrong idea. The accessories are just for a photo today. Emmy asked me to hold onto them for now."

A few people at the table chimed in.

"Captain Harlow has great taste. That wave design really suits Mr. Ford."

"She's a captain. Only someone who understands the sea can understand her."

"Don't be jealous, Mr. Wilder. Mr. Ford's practically family."

Emery raised her glass. "Alright, that's enough."

She told them to stop, but the smile tugging at the corner of her mouth said otherwise.

I sat by the door while a server placed the cold appetizers in front of me. My stomach couldn't handle cold seafood, and Emery used to know that, but right now she was busy serving warm dishes onto Noah's plate.

Noah walked over to me with his glass raised. "Mr. Wilder, a toast. Emmy always talks about how hard you work, taking care of her parents at home. I genuinely admire that."

I looked at the watch on his wrist. "What else does she say?"

A glint of amusement crossed Noah's eyes. "She always says you handle everything at home perfectly, but you've never been able to read the ocean in her heart."

The room went quiet for a second before someone jumped in to smooth things over with a laugh.

"That's how it goes for crew families. They don't get to see each other much. It takes understanding on both sides."

Gerald leaned over and muttered under his breath. "Just drink it. Don't embarrass yourself."

Emery looked at me. "Corbin, whatever this is, we can talk about it in private. Don't make a scene."

I picked up my glass but didn't drink from it. Instead, I poured the contents into the potted plant beside me.

Noah's expression shifted. Gerald shot to his feet. "Corbin Wilder!"

Emery stood up too, reaching out to pull me back. But just then, the first mate's husband, Wesley Pryce, pushed through the door from outside. His face was flushed from drinking, and he had a folded piece of paper clenched in his hand.

"I've been looking everywhere for you," he said.

He shoved the paper into my hand, his voice too loud to contain. "The supply shipment from Beauhaven wasn't just accessories. There's also a signed receipt authorization, and your name is on it. But I'm pretty sure you never signed anything."

The color drained from Emery's face, and she lunged for the paper. I stepped back and unfolded it.

At the bottom of the signature line, written clear as day, was my name, Corbin Wilder.

But it wasn't my handwriting.

When the stamp came down, Emery closed her eyes.Once the divorce certificate was in my hands, I slid the old wedding band off my finger. The initials engraved on the inside had already started to wear away. Emery saw it, and her breathing grew heavier."Can I keep the ring?""No," I said. After I left, I sold the ring to a pawn shop. It didn't fetch much, but I used the money to buy Wesley a new suit. When he got it, he had to look away for a second."I can't accept this.""It's to celebrate your wife taking over as acting captain of the Farlan."He said quietly, "She doesn't want people thinking she got ahead because of what happened to Captain Harlow.""She's not replacing anyone," I said. "She earned the group's recognition on her own."Before long, the shipping group released its formal disciplinary notice. Emery's candidacy for fleet captain was revoked, she was placed on a six-month training suspension, and she was transferred off the Farlan.Noah was required to retur

That was fine by me. It was only 30 days.Every day she sent me something, whether it was hot soup, flowers, a first aid kit, or harbor souvenirs, and I returned every single item unopened. On the seventh day, she was waiting for me outside the hotel. "Corbin, I was an awful person before."I walked around her, and she followed. "You used to say all you wanted was for me to come home safe. Well, I'm right here on shore now. Can't you even look at me?"I stopped. "Wanting you safe doesn't mean I have to take you back."Her face went pale. "You really don't love me anymore?"I didn't answer. At some point, love had worn so thin there was nothing left to count.Noah wasn't staying quiet either. He posted a long statement online, claiming he was a legitimate port promotions partner who'd been maliciously targeted by a captain's spouse. The photos were cropped to hide the accessories, showing only his exhausted face. The comments tore into me."The spouse doesn't get to just lose i

Emery's lips moved a few times before she managed to speak. "I didn't tell him to file that."The officer asked, "The account is yours, and the verification code was sent to your personal phone."Emery went silent. I looked at her."So, for the past few years, I've been registered as living at Tidewater?""Noah didn't have a place to stay for a while, and I just wanted to help him get through it."I laughed. "Using my name?"She lowered her head. "I thought it was just a few subsidy claims. I didn't think anyone would look into it."The officer's expression hardened. "Captain Harlow, I'd advise you to choose your words carefully. The family subsidy comes from a designated account, not your personal funds."That was when Emery realized she'd said the wrong thing. She looked at me, her voice dropping. "Corbin, I really wasn't trying to hurt you.""But did you ever think about me?" I asked. She didn't answer, because the answer was too ugly to say out loud. The conference room

"Noah's the one who came to me.""He was so upset he couldn't sleep all night. He said you threatened him with a recording."I unlocked my phone and played the cafe recording. When Noah's voice came through saying "she doesn't love you anymore," Emery's face twisted.By the time it reached "I didn't have to lift a finger, and I still won where it counts," Emery's jaw tightened."Turn it off," she said quietly.I turned it off. She sat down on the couch and didn't speak for a long time.I went back to packing. Then she asked, "Where are you going?""Moving out.""This is our home.""Not for much longer."She stood up. "Corbin, I already told you I'd deal with Noah. What more do you want?"I zipped the suitcase shut. "You can't deal with him.""I can.""You don't have the heart to."The color left her face. Her phone rang, and it was Noah.Emery looked at the screen but didn't pick up. The call ended and started again, and she still didn't answer.I wheeled my suitcase to

"I know you have full audit authority over the vessel. Can you withdraw the request?""For six years, you never once asked about what my mother left behind. Now that something's gone wrong, you suddenly care about my authority. It's too late."Emery set the notice down, and for the first time, real panic crossed her face. "Corbin, you can't keep digging into this.""Afraid it'll hurt your promotion?" I asked."No." She hesitated. "This could affect the entire ship."I looked at her steadily. "So, you finally remember there's an entire ship."She came closer and gripped my shoulders. "Listen to me just this once. I'll deal with Noah, and I'll get everything back. Just withdraw the request.""Withdraw it, and then you keep stamping my name on things?"Her face went ashen. "I was wrong."It was the first time she'd ever said that. But it wasn't because she'd hurt me. It was because I was holding something that scared her.Noah asked to meet. The location was the cafe downstairs

That night, I moved into the guest bedroom. Emery stood in the doorway."Corbin, don't do this. Don't split the rooms."I kept making the bed. "You're at sea ten months out of the year. I've been sleeping alone anyway."She couldn't find a response. After a moment, she softened. "I'll make Noah give the accessories back.""They're tainted.""Then I'll buy you new ones.""Don't bother."She walked in and tried to take the duvet cover out of my hands, but I pulled away. Anger crept into her face."What do you want from me? I've already backed down.""I want a divorce," I said. She stared at me. "Even with your audit authority, we've been married for six years. Do we really have to burn everything to the ground?"I set the pillow in place. "I don't need to say it twice."She let out a scornful laugh, still convinced I was throwing a tantrum. "This is how things are. You think a moment of spite is going to change anything?"I didn't respond. When Emery saw that my mind was mad
