Marvin
Betrayed.
If I had to describe my feelings in one word, that would’ve been it. One day had passed since Elena had bailed on me and left me at the restaurant, and for some strange reason, it had been bothering me.
Today was Tiago’s special day, and we were all gathered at the church to prepare for the wedding ceremony, which was only a few hours away. I tried to be on my best behavior, but I was not really excited for the ceremony, the reception, or the after-party.
All groomsmen were gathered in a room, including Tiago’s geeky friends from his school days. Although I couldn’t stand the sight of them, I had to admit that I envied my little brother for being able to maintain such tight r
Marvin“Calm down. It’s me!” Victor growled. I stared my adoptive brother in the eyes and pushed him against the wall. “All the more reason to choke you!”I squeezed my hand around his throat for a split second, before releasing him as I did not want to ruin Tiago’s day. There was nothing more which I wanted than to kill this father-stealing bastard, but that would have to wait.“Where is dad?”Victor let out a cough and held his hand against the wall as he caught his breath. “You sick motherfucker, they should’ve kept you in your cage!”I rolled my eyes at Victor’s way of overre
Elena“You look gorgeous, Elena!” My dad gushed as he pulled out his camera and started taking pictures. I took an awkward stance and hid my face in embarrassment.“Dad, this dress is hideous,” I told him. “Aren’t you supposed to tell me to take it off and to cover myself up? It's a church wedding.”“For what?” He laughed. “Who am I to tell you what a woman should and shouldn’t wear? Now smile so I can take a pretty picture.”My heart grew soft at my dad’s normal behavior, which he hadn’t shown in a while. He took the time to wear a suit and to do his hair and it had been a long time since he looked this decen
Elena “Oh my god,” I gasped, surprised as I exited the vehicle and stared at the fairytale-like venue in front of me. It literally seemed as if I had jumped straight into a storybook. Right in front of my eyes was a gorgeous white church building, which seemed like the perfect location for a wedding. I looked at my surroundings and noticed the streets were filled with several fancy cars, which belonged to the guests. For the most part, it seemed like the guests were also well off, and if I wouldn’t have listened to Victoria and would’ve shown up in my usual outfit, it would’ve been a complete disaster. It was clear that Anya and Tiago went full out. “Elena!” I looked ahead and waved my hand enthusiastically at Rona, who ran down the stairs. There was still a lot we had to take care of for the reception and after-party and had she not been there, it would’ve been a lot to figure out on my own. It was strange to se
Elena“Guys, group meeting!”All our heads turned to Rona, who had an impressed look on her face. The ceremony hall would be open in one hour, which meant we still had some time left before it was time for us to switch rooms and take our seats. “Wait, first of all.” Rona looked at us. “The bar looks really pretty, doesn’t it?”It was not something odd for Rona to jump from one subject to the other. It was something she often did, and we were all used to it. “It does!” One of the girls agreed. Even though Stacey and I started working at the bar around the same time, she was a bit less motivated than I was—but now that there was money involved, everything was different.“You wanted to tell us something?” I pushed Rona. “Oh, yes!” She spoke. “I—““Wait!” Stacey interrupted her. Annoyed, I rolled my eyes and waited for her
Elena“Why are you all staring at me?” I asked nervously. Rona held a few strands of my hair between her hands while Tiffany stepped forward. “She has dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, and she would fit in the dress.”All the girls, including Anya, took relieved breaths and laughed at the situation while I was still confused about my involvement. What did I even do to deserve this?“You don’t mind, right, Elena?” Anya asked with hopeful eyes. Even if I wanted to say no, I had all these girls staring at me, and Rona squeezing her nails into my back—ready to kill me any second. “These people are paying us a lot, so just nod and smile,” She whispered.Unfortunately, she was right, they were generous people, and now it was time to do something in return. “I mean, sure—why not!” I tried to sound as cheerful as possible.“Thank you, thank you, th
Elena“Stupid, stupid, stupid!” I bumped my forehead against the sink in the restroom. After seeing him, I freaked out and made a run for it—and now I was too afraid to face him.The cold expression on his face was enough to prove that he was not that happy to see me either. I mean, it was understandable—after I had walked out on him for a second time.Marvin was Tiago’s brother?Tiago was Marvin’s brother?Marvin and Tiago were brothers? It was all so obvious, and the signs were literally there, but I couldn’t see it. I was aware of Tiago’s last name, but I couldn’t make the connection because it didn’t make sense. How could someone as sweet and soft as Tiago, who could not even look someone in the eye, be part of a cartel family? What about Linda and Karina? One was way too kind, and the other one way too stupid.
MarvinI could see her staring at me from the corner of my eye, but I kept my look fixated on Tiago as the tears were rolling down his cheeks.Given a chance, I would’ve rushed over to my brother’s side to wipe away his tears—even if they were tears of joy. I could not stand the sight of his tears, and it almost brought me back to the moment I went to prison. The moment I told him, he could not rely on me anymore.Elena’s presence came as a surprise. After hearing my original partner could not make it, I didn't make much out of it, but I was not prepared for this. Was she Anya’s acquaintance? Seeing Elena felt like a dream, but she thought otherwise because it only took her a second to run off. I was okay with that because I had other things on my mind—such as the threat from the Hernandez.Growing up the way I did, there was one rule which stuck by me, and that was to
Elena‘She meant nothing to me. I saw her as my little social experiment and chose to interact with someone below my status. She is immature, naive, her personality is average, and so are her looks so—‘“Man, I should’ve just punched him in the face when I had the chance to,” I complained as I almost ripped the dress from my body. What an odd thing to say when I was the one who had walked out on him.“So he’s the one who so desperately wanted to meet up with me, and now I’m the issue?” I murmured, confused. He didn’t even seem to regret those hateful words because he had walked away right after.Even when we were taking the pictures, he did not have the guts to look at me—and I knew that was what I wanted, but I wouldn’t take this slander. Whether he was in the cartel or not.He made me look ridiculous, desperate, pathetic—while he was the
