Chapter 4

Author: Lucky Dreamer
The atmosphere inside the delivery suite turned ice-cold.

Ethan forced an awkward smile.

"Logan, Marmalade almost scratched Victoria and the baby. Victoria's emotions are all over the place right now. She's convinced there's another baby hidden inside that cart."

Logan didn't spare Ethan's excuses a single glance. He crouched down and gently stroked my head where the nylon cords had cut deep enough to draw blood.

I clamped my teeth around his sleeve and tugged desperately toward the cart.

[Logan! Search the cart! Check the hidden compartment underneath!]

[The baby's running out of air!]

He couldn't understand what I was saying, but he understood me.

Logan rose to his feet, his sharp gaze locking onto the stainless-steel cart.

"Search it."

The order had barely left his mouth before four bodyguards in black suits rushed into the room.

Martha collapsed onto the floor, trembling uncontrollably.

The guards worked quickly, dumping every piece of medical waste out of the cart.

Top shelf.

Middle shelf.

Bottom shelf.

All they could find were blood-soaked gauze, used syringes, and empty medicine bottles.

There was no baby. They even pulled open every drawer and searched every inch.

"Mr. Sterling, there's nothing unusual." The lead guard lowered his head as he reported back.

Logan frowned. His eyes swept over the mess scattered across the floor before returning to me, still struggling frantically inside the net.

The hidden compartment beneath the cart had been brilliantly concealed. If I hadn't seen Martha hide the baby there with my own eyes, no one would have known it even existed.

Ethan straightened his back, sounding almost aggrieved. "Logan, do you believe me now? I may have married into this family, but I still have my dignity. You can't trample all over my character because of a cat throwing a tantrum."

Cassandra wiped away a few fake tears. "Mr. Sterling, Ethan's devotion to Victoria is beyond question. Making such a scene over nothing will only hurt Ethan... and if word gets out, it won't do the Sterling family's reputation any favors."

Logan fell silent. He looked at Victoria, who was so pale she could barely stand, and a flicker of heartache crossed his face.

"Victoria, maybe you're just exhausted." With a quiet sigh, he slipped an arm around his sister's shoulders.

"Marmalade's getting old. Maybe something's wrong with him. I'll have him taken to the best veterinary hospital for a full examination. You should get back into bed and focus on recovering."

Hearing that, Victoria finally stopped resisting. She let Ethan help her back onto the bed.

"I'm sorry, Ethan… I was just so scared. Maybe... maybe something really is wrong with me..."

Ethan tucked the blanket around her with practiced tenderness. "It's okay, sweetheart. Get some sleep. Everything will be fine when you wake up."

The impostor cooed happily from the nanny's arms.

[Hahaha! Everyone in the Sterling family is a bunch of idiots!]

[This multibillion-dollar empire is as good as mine!]

Meanwhile, from the hidden compartment beneath the cart, the rightful heiress's voice had grown so faint it was barely there.

[Cat God, am I going to the stars now?]

[It's so dark... I'm so sleepy...]

[Mommy... goodbye...]

No!

I refused to let these two parasites destroy the girl I'd protected for over a decade.

And I absolutely refused to let my precious munchkin die beneath that cart before she'd even had the chance to see the world.

[Meow! Out of my way!]

A deafening roar erupted from my throat as my vision turned crimson.

Every muscle in my hind legs coiled before exploding with terrifying force.

Riiip!

The reinforced net tore apart.

Before anyone could react, I launched myself like a cannonball and slammed headfirst into the solid steel base of the cart.

Crack!

The sound of splintering bone rang out at the same instant the steel gave way.

The cart flipped into the air before crashing heavily onto the floor, and the hidden compartment underneath burst open from the impact.

A tiny baby—her skin already turning purple, her eyes tightly shut—rolled out onto the floor and came to rest at Victoria's bedside.

Five years flew by in the blink of an eye.Little Stella grew into a bright, cheerful little girl. She inherited the Sterling family's intelligence, and somehow, she could understand my cat language. The baby-language gift had faded as she'd gotten older, but the bond between us never did."Marmalade! Run! Uncle Logan's trying to catch us for a bath!"Five-year-old Stella tore across the garden on her little legs.I raced after her, all my chubby fluff bouncing with every stride.[Damn it! I hate baths! Hide behind the rock garden!]Logan stood on the lawn holding a garden hose, looking utterly helpless."Stella Sterling! If you keep helping Marmalade run away, you can forget about ice cream today!"Stella peeked out from behind the rocks and stuck her tongue out at him. "You're so mean, Uncle Logan! Marmalade says he doesn't want a bath!"Victoria stepped outside carrying a tray of afternoon tea. Watching us tear around the yard, she couldn't help smiling. In the past five

Three months later. My cast finally came off, and I was discharged from the veterinary hospital. The day I returned to the Sterling estate, Logan had a red carpet rolled out just for me. Two rows of bodyguards stood at attention in dark sunglasses before bowing in perfect unison."Welcome home, Cat God!"I strutted down the carpet with my tail held high. Now this was the life.Victoria had made a full recovery. After everything she'd been through, she'd changed. The pampered heiress who'd once lived only for love was gone. She had taken over several of Sterling Group's subsidiaries, making swift, decisive moves that established her as one of Evermont's most formidable businesswomen. As for the rivals who had hoped to watch the Sterling family fall apart, she and Logan crushed every one of them.At home, though, she was still the same gentle mother."Marmalade, come try this. It just arrived this morning."Smiling, Victoria set down a solid gold cat bowl filled with fresh blu

I had no idea how much time had passed.Warmth surrounded me, and the steady beep of medical monitors echoed in my ears.I slowly opened my eyes.Everything was white.I was lying inside a temperature-controlled ICU enclosure at a veterinary hospital. One of my front paws was wrapped in a cast, and tubes ran from every part of my body.Through the glass, I saw Logan. He looked exhausted. His eyes were bloodshot, dark stubble covered his jaw, and it was obvious he hadn't slept in days. The moment he saw my eyes open, he shot to his feet."Doctor! Marmalade's awake!"Several veterinarians hurried over and began examining me."It's a miracle.""The scans don't make any sense."The attending veterinarian stared at the monitor in disbelief."When Marmalade arrived, he had multiple ruptured organs, severe blood loss, and no detectable vital signs."But his body's healing itself at an unbelievable rate. I've never seen anything like it."I rolled my eyes.[Well, of course. Did

Two simple words. They hit Ethan like a sledgehammer. His laughter died instantly as he stared at Logan."What do you mean?"Without a word, Logan turned his phone around.A financial news broadcast filled the screen."Breaking news. Police have cracked a major international money laundering network."Authorities have seized every shell company connected to the case. Hundreds of billions of dollars in illicit assets have been recovered and frozen."The offshore accounts of the primary suspect, identified only as Mr. Caldwell, have also been frozen with assistance from Interpol."Ethan's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw the names of the companies on the screen. Those were all the shell companies he had set up over the past three years!"No! That's impossible!" He struggled wildly against the bodyguards. "I covered my tracks perfectly! You couldn't have found them!"Logan looked down at him with a cold smile."Ethan, did you really think spending three year

Logan snapped his fingers.Bodyguards poured through the doorway, sealing off every exit from the delivery suite.Realizing the situation was hopeless, a savage look flashed across Ethan's face. He suddenly broke free from the guards restraining him, snatched a pair of surgical scissors off the cart, and charged straight at Victoria."Damn you! If you won't let me live, then we'll die together!"Everything happened so fast that no one had time to react.Victoria was still cradling her precious daughter, with nowhere to run.Ethan's face twisted with madness as the scissors drove toward her throat.[Like hell I'll let that happen!]Ignoring the agony shooting through my fractured paw, I launched myself into the air.Smack! My paw slammed across Ethan's face. My claws raked deep, bloody grooves across his cheek.Ethan screamed. The scissors veered off course and buried themselves in the mattress.Logan reacted instantly. One brutal kick landed squarely behind Ethan's knee.

A deathly silence fell. The air inside the delivery suite seemed to freeze.Victoria's eyes flew wide open. She practically tumbled off the hospital bed, ignoring the blood still running down her legs as she scrambled toward the hidden compartment."My baby!"Dropping to her knees, she reached out with trembling hands but couldn't bring herself to touch the tiny infant whose skin had already turned purple. The baby's eyes remained shut. Her chest didn't rise or fall in the slightest."Doctor! Save her! Please, save her!" Victoria's anguished scream echoed through the room as tears streamed down her face.Murderous fury erupted in Logan's eyes. He grabbed the attending physician by the collar and shoved him toward the baby."If you can't save her, you'll never hold a scalpel again."The doctor stumbled to his knees and immediately began emergency treatment. He cleared the baby's airway, started CPR, and placed a tiny oxygen mask over her face. The only sound left in the delive
