Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Dreamer
Ethan's face went pale. A flash of malice crossed his eyes before he whirled toward Martha.

"Martha! What are you standing there for? Get that garbage out of here. Now!"

Martha flinched, gripping the handle of the cart so tightly her knuckles turned white as she hurried toward the door.

"Stop!"

Victoria threw back the blanket. Blood was still running down her legs, but she didn't seem to notice.

"I said stop! Didn't you hear me?"

Martha froze in place, the cart coming to a halt in the doorway.

Ethan lunged forward and grabbed Victoria by the shoulders. "Victoria! Have you lost your mind? You just gave birth! You'll ruin your recovery if you keep this up!"

As he held her in place, he shot the security guards a meaningful look. "That cat's completely out of control. Get a catchpole over him and take him to the vet for a sedative. Now!"

The two guards immediately returned with a heavy-duty animal control net and closed in from both sides.

I dropped into a defensive crouch, a savage growl rumbling in my throat.

[Come one step closer, and I'll claw your face off!]

The nylon net dropped over me. It tightened instantly, the cords biting painfully into my fur and skin.

Amid the chaos, I caught Martha turning her back to Victoria. Her hands darted into the black garbage bag.

A split second later, she pulled out a tiny, limp bundle and slipped it into a hidden compartment beneath the cart.

Victoria shoved Ethan away and stumbled toward the garbage bag. Her trembling hands ripped it open.

It was empty. There was nothing but blood-soaked gauze and discarded medical waste.

Victoria froze.

Ethan let out a quiet breath of relief. The darkness in his eyes vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a look of heartbreaking concern.

He walked over and gently wrapped an arm around Victoria's shoulders.

"Victoria, do you see now? There's nothing inside except medical waste. You're exhausted. Your hormones are all over the place after giving birth. You're imagining things."

Victoria stared blankly at the bloodstained gauze scattered across the floor, her gaze growing distant.

Had she… really heard it wrong?

The little imposter giggled from the nanny's arms.

[Hahaha! What an idiot! We fooled her again!]

[Once that little witch suffocates in the hidden compartment, the Sterling family's fortune will be all mine!]

Rage exploded inside me.

[Victoria! Don't give up! She's in the hidden compartment under the cart!]

[She's running out of air! Please, look!]

I hurled myself against the net with everything I had. The cords cut into me until blood matted my fur, but Victoria couldn't understand a single word I was trying to tell her.

Ethan glanced at my desperate struggle and ordered coldly, "Victoria, Marmalade's completely out of control. Send him to the animal hospital. Where's the doctor? Give my wife a sedative and let her get some rest."

A nurse approached cautiously with a syringe balanced on a metal tray.

Victoria didn't resist. She simply stood there, hollow-eyed.

Just as the needle was about to pierce her arm, the door flew open.

A tall man strode into the room, an icy aura radiating from every step.

"Ethan Caldwell, have you got a death wish?" His voice was low enough to freeze the room.

It was Logan Sterling, heir to the Sterling family and the true power behind Sterling Group.

His gaze swept across the room before settling on me, trapped inside the net, my muzzle stained with blood. His brows knitted together. Without a word, he strode forward and kicked the guard holding the net so hard the man crashed to the floor.

"Who gave you permission to touch Marmalade?"

Ethan's face turned deathly pale. He hurried forward. "Logan, you've got it all wrong. Marmalade suddenly went berserk—"

"Shut up." Logan didn't even spare him a glance. He walked straight to Victoria, slipped off his suit jacket, and draped it gently over her shoulders.

Then he turned to look at me. His voice was calm, unwavering, and impossible to question.

"I believe Marmalade."

Five years flew by in the blink of an eye.Little Stella grew into a bright, cheerful little girl. She inherited the Sterling family's intelligence, and somehow, she could understand my cat language. The baby-language gift had faded as she'd gotten older, but the bond between us never did."Marmalade! Run! Uncle Logan's trying to catch us for a bath!"Five-year-old Stella tore across the garden on her little legs.I raced after her, all my chubby fluff bouncing with every stride.[Damn it! I hate baths! Hide behind the rock garden!]Logan stood on the lawn holding a garden hose, looking utterly helpless."Stella Sterling! If you keep helping Marmalade run away, you can forget about ice cream today!"Stella peeked out from behind the rocks and stuck her tongue out at him. "You're so mean, Uncle Logan! Marmalade says he doesn't want a bath!"Victoria stepped outside carrying a tray of afternoon tea. Watching us tear around the yard, she couldn't help smiling. In the past five

Three months later. My cast finally came off, and I was discharged from the veterinary hospital. The day I returned to the Sterling estate, Logan had a red carpet rolled out just for me. Two rows of bodyguards stood at attention in dark sunglasses before bowing in perfect unison."Welcome home, Cat God!"I strutted down the carpet with my tail held high. Now this was the life.Victoria had made a full recovery. After everything she'd been through, she'd changed. The pampered heiress who'd once lived only for love was gone. She had taken over several of Sterling Group's subsidiaries, making swift, decisive moves that established her as one of Evermont's most formidable businesswomen. As for the rivals who had hoped to watch the Sterling family fall apart, she and Logan crushed every one of them.At home, though, she was still the same gentle mother."Marmalade, come try this. It just arrived this morning."Smiling, Victoria set down a solid gold cat bowl filled with fresh blu

I had no idea how much time had passed.Warmth surrounded me, and the steady beep of medical monitors echoed in my ears.I slowly opened my eyes.Everything was white.I was lying inside a temperature-controlled ICU enclosure at a veterinary hospital. One of my front paws was wrapped in a cast, and tubes ran from every part of my body.Through the glass, I saw Logan. He looked exhausted. His eyes were bloodshot, dark stubble covered his jaw, and it was obvious he hadn't slept in days. The moment he saw my eyes open, he shot to his feet."Doctor! Marmalade's awake!"Several veterinarians hurried over and began examining me."It's a miracle.""The scans don't make any sense."The attending veterinarian stared at the monitor in disbelief."When Marmalade arrived, he had multiple ruptured organs, severe blood loss, and no detectable vital signs."But his body's healing itself at an unbelievable rate. I've never seen anything like it."I rolled my eyes.[Well, of course. Did

Two simple words. They hit Ethan like a sledgehammer. His laughter died instantly as he stared at Logan."What do you mean?"Without a word, Logan turned his phone around.A financial news broadcast filled the screen."Breaking news. Police have cracked a major international money laundering network."Authorities have seized every shell company connected to the case. Hundreds of billions of dollars in illicit assets have been recovered and frozen."The offshore accounts of the primary suspect, identified only as Mr. Caldwell, have also been frozen with assistance from Interpol."Ethan's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw the names of the companies on the screen. Those were all the shell companies he had set up over the past three years!"No! That's impossible!" He struggled wildly against the bodyguards. "I covered my tracks perfectly! You couldn't have found them!"Logan looked down at him with a cold smile."Ethan, did you really think spending three year

Logan snapped his fingers.Bodyguards poured through the doorway, sealing off every exit from the delivery suite.Realizing the situation was hopeless, a savage look flashed across Ethan's face. He suddenly broke free from the guards restraining him, snatched a pair of surgical scissors off the cart, and charged straight at Victoria."Damn you! If you won't let me live, then we'll die together!"Everything happened so fast that no one had time to react.Victoria was still cradling her precious daughter, with nowhere to run.Ethan's face twisted with madness as the scissors drove toward her throat.[Like hell I'll let that happen!]Ignoring the agony shooting through my fractured paw, I launched myself into the air.Smack! My paw slammed across Ethan's face. My claws raked deep, bloody grooves across his cheek.Ethan screamed. The scissors veered off course and buried themselves in the mattress.Logan reacted instantly. One brutal kick landed squarely behind Ethan's knee.

A deathly silence fell. The air inside the delivery suite seemed to freeze.Victoria's eyes flew wide open. She practically tumbled off the hospital bed, ignoring the blood still running down her legs as she scrambled toward the hidden compartment."My baby!"Dropping to her knees, she reached out with trembling hands but couldn't bring herself to touch the tiny infant whose skin had already turned purple. The baby's eyes remained shut. Her chest didn't rise or fall in the slightest."Doctor! Save her! Please, save her!" Victoria's anguished scream echoed through the room as tears streamed down her face.Murderous fury erupted in Logan's eyes. He grabbed the attending physician by the collar and shoved him toward the baby."If you can't save her, you'll never hold a scalpel again."The doctor stumbled to his knees and immediately began emergency treatment. He cleared the baby's airway, started CPR, and placed a tiny oxygen mask over her face. The only sound left in the delive
