The office fell silent.

Two security officers stopped at the entrance.

Every pair of eyes turned to Zara.

Her mouth went dry.

"I didn't take anything," she repeated, her voice trembling. "I just got here."

Neither of the officers spoke.

One of them looked at Adrian.

"Sir, we were instructed to escort Miss Daniels downstairs until the investigation is complete."

Zara's heart sank.

She looked at Adrian, hoping he'd say something.

Anything.

Instead, he remained unusually calm.

"Did anyone see her leave this office?" he asked.

The officers exchanged glances.

"No, sir."

"Did anyone see her with confidential files?"

"No, sir."

"Then why are you treating her like a suspect?"

"The report came from an anonymous employee."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"An anonymous employee isn't evidence."

Relief washed over Zara.

At least someone believed her.

The security officers stepped aside.

"We apologize, sir."

"You may leave."

They nodded before quietly closing the door behind them.

The moment they were gone, Zara released a shaky breath.

"I should go."

"No."

She looked up.

"I don't want to get involved in whatever is happening here."

"You already are."

His words made her stomach twist.

"I've done nothing wrong."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I wouldn't have stopped security if I didn't."

She searched his face for any sign of doubt.

There wasn't any.

For some reason, that made her even more nervous.

A few minutes later, Evelyn returned with a tablet in her hands.

"The article is online."

Adrian took it from her.

His jaw tightened.

Without saying a word, he handed it to Zara.

The headline read:

KNIGHT TECHNOLOGIES ACCUSED OF HIDING BILLIONS IN SECRET ACCOUNTS.

Her eyes widened.

"This can't be true."

"It isn't," Adrian replied.

"But someone wants people to believe it."

She looked up.

"Who would do something like this?"

"If I knew, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

Evelyn sighed.

"The board is already panicking."

"My investors will panic next," Adrian said.

Before anyone could speak again, Zara's phone vibrated.

She ignored it.

A second later...

It rang again.

Then again.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

She stepped away and answered.

"Hello?"

"Miss Daniels?"

"Yes?"

"This is Mr. Bello, your landlord."

Her shoulders tensed.

"I told you I'd call you."

"I've waited long enough."

"Please, just give me—"

"You have until this evening."

She closed her eyes.

"Sir..."

"If the money isn't paid today, your belongings will be outside."

The line went dead.

She stood there for a moment, staring at her phone.

She had lost her job.

She was about to lose her apartment.

And now she was standing in the office of the richest man she'd ever met, surrounded by problems that had nothing to do with her.

Or maybe they did.

When she turned around, Adrian was watching her.

"Bad news?"

She gave a small laugh.

"I don't remember the last time I got good news."

He didn't ask any more questions.

Instead, he walked to his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a white envelope.

He placed it in front of her.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

She hesitated before taking it.

Inside was a cheque.

Her breath caught.

The amount written on it was more money than she had ever held in her life.

Her hands immediately began to shake.

"I... I can't accept this."

"It's not a gift."

She looked up.

"Then what is it?"

"An advance."

"For a job I don't even have?"

"You have it."

Her eyes widened.

"I passed the interview?"

"I hired you the moment you chose honesty over impressing me."

She stared at him in disbelief.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

She slowly placed the cheque back into the envelope.

"There has to be something you're not telling me."

For the first time since they'd met, Adrian looked away.

"There is."

The office door suddenly burst open.

A middle-aged man stormed in without knocking.

His face was red with anger.

"So this is her?"

He pointed directly at Zara.

"This is the woman you're replacing my daughter with?"

Zara blinked.

"My... what?"

The man took another step forward.

"I warned you, Adrian."

"If you break your engagement to my daughter because of this girl..."

He slammed his hand on the desk.

"...I'll make sure both of you regret it."

The room froze.

Zara looked from the furious man to Adrian.

Engagement?

Her eyes widened.

What exactly had she walked into?

By six-thirty, Zara had changed her mind about dinner at least four times. The first time, she told herself she was too tired. The second time, she reminded herself that Adrian had a company worth billions to worry about and probably didn't need to be spending his evening taking his assistant—former assistant, apparently—to dinner. The third time, she looked at the dress hanging on the back of her bedroom door and decided she actually wanted to go.The fourth time, she changed the dress. She stood in front of her mirror, staring at herself.“This is ridiculous,” she muttered. She wasn't getting married. She was going to dinner. With Adrian.Which somehow made it worse. Her phone buzzed.Adrian: I'm outside.Zara looked at the message. She checked the time.6:58 p.m.He was early. She grabbed her bag and hurried downstairs. When she stepped outside, she found him leaning against the side of his car, checking his phone. He looked up.For a second, he didn't say anything.Zara immediatel

By eight-thirty the next morning, the atmosphere at Knight Technologies had changed.Zara noticed it before she even reached Adrian’s office.People were speaking more quietly than usual. Groups of employees stood near the elevators with their phones in their hands, discussing something that clearly mattered. Two members of the finance team walked past her without their usual morning greetings, both looking unusually serious. She slowed down.Something had happened.Evelyn appeared from behind her desk carrying two cups of coffee.“Before you ask, yes, something is going on.”Zara accepted one of the cups. “I wasn't going to ask.”“You were absolutely going to ask.”“I was going to mind my business.”Evelyn gave her a look. “Since when?”Zara laughed softly, but her eyes moved toward Adrian's office. The door was open.He was already inside, standing beside the window with his phone pressed to his ear. His suit jacket was off, his sleeves rolled slightly above his wrists. He looked ca

By Thursday afternoon, Zara had officially become the busiest person at Knight Technologies. At least, that's how it felt. She had meetings.Research.A presentation to prepare.Three different marketing documents to review. And an annoying amount of coffee keeping her alive. She dropped a folder on Evelyn's desk."Please tell me this is the last thing."Evelyn opened it."Definitely."Zara sighed in relief."Thank God.""Actually..."Zara slowly looked at her.Evelyn smiled."You have a meeting with Adrian in twenty minutes."Zara stared at her."Why?""I don't know.""Did he say what it's about?""No.""Of course."Evelyn laughed."You know, for someone who claims he's not your boyfriend, you spend a lot of time talking about him."Zara grabbed her folder."He's my boss.""Sure.""That's all.""Of course."Zara walked away before Evelyn could say anything else. She reached Adrian's office and knocked."Come in."She entered.Adrian was standing by the window, his phone in his hand.

Zara woke up the next morning with one thought. She was quitting. Not Knight Technologies entirely.Just whatever strange, confusing thing was happening between her and Adrian. She was tired of the staring. The late-night conversations. The way one smile from him could ruin her entire train of thought. And especially the way he had started looking at her like she was more than his assistant. It was becoming dangerous. She got to the office at exactly 8:03 a.m.Adrian was already there.Of course. He looked up from his laptop."You're late."Zara checked the clock."Three minutes.""Three minutes is late.""Good morning to you too."His mouth twitched."Good morning."She dropped a file on his desk."Your 9 a.m. meeting is confirmed. Your 11 a.m. meeting has been moved to two. Adrian stared at the document.Zara stared at Adrian.Neither of them spoke. The room suddenly felt too small. His mother's voice finally broke the silence."What does that document mean?"Adrian didn't answer. He was already scrolling through the attached files."There are twelve transfers," he said."From when?" Zara asked."Twenty-four years ago."His eyes moved quickly across the screen."Richard's company received money from Knight Technologies."Zara frowned."Why?""I don't know.""Was it illegal?"Adrian looked at her."Not necessarily."That answer somehow made things worse. His mother stepped closer."Adrian."He turned the phone toward her."Do you recognize this?"She studied it.Her face changed."I've seen that account number before.""Where?""Your father kept an old file in his study."Adrian's jaw tightened."Do you still have it?""I don't know.""Think."She looked at him."Your father destroyed most of his old business files before he died.""Most?""There were a f

"We've hidden enough."Zara's heart hammered."Hidden what?"Margaret looked at her."Your father was alive when your mother left."Zara blinked. She had grown up with almost no information about him.Whenever she'd asked her mother, Evelyn had always changed the subject.Sometimes she'd simply said, He's gone.Zara had assumed that meant dead. Now she realized it hadn't."Who was he?"Margaret glanced at Adrian. Then at his mother."Richard Hayes."Zara's face went blank."Nadia's father?""Yes."The world seemed to stop."Nadia's father was my father?"Margaret nodded.
