THE WRONG ROOM

The text message that destroyed my life arrived at 11:47 PM.

Room 2807. Come alone. I'll explain everything.

I stared at the screen, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Three years. Three years of playing the perfect, quiet wife to Marcus Chen, and this was the first time he’d ever summoned me to a hotel.

I didn't bother replying. I didn't bother changing out of my jeans and sweater. I just grabbed my keys, my phone, and the small can of pepper spray Marcus didn't know I carried, and walked out the door.

If he was cheating, I was going to catch him in the act. I was going to take pictures, take the prenup he swore didn't exist, and burn his life to the ground.

The Obsidian Tower loomed over Manhattan like a glass monster. It was the most exclusive hotel in the city—the kind of place where billionaires washed their dirty money and their dirty secrets behind soundproof walls.

I walked past the front desk, my heels clicking against the marble like a countdown. I didn't stop to ask for a key. The door to 2807 was already unlocked.

I pushed it open, my mouth already open to scream his name.

But the words died in my throat.

There was no mistress. There was no cheating husband.

Instead, there was a man bleeding out on the pristine white carpet.

He was sprawled against the foot of the bed, his dark suit ruined, his face pale. But it was his eyes that froze me in place—impossibly blue, like frozen oceans, and locked directly on mine.

"You're... not her," he rasped, a wet, broken sound.

I should have run. I should have called 911. Instead, my medical training kicked in, overriding my terror. I dropped my bag and rushed to his side, pressing my hands against the dark, wet stain spreading across his shoulder.

"Who are you?" I demanded. "Who shot you?"

"Dorian Blackwood." He laughed, a grim, humorless sound that ended in a cough. "And you're in the wrong room, sweetheart."

Blackwood.

The name hit me like a physical blow. Blackwood Industries. The trillion-dollar conglomerate that owned half of Manhattan. The family that was currently suing my husband’s company into absolute oblivion.

"We need to get you to a hospital," I said, reaching for my phone.

His hand shot out, his fingers wrapping around my wrist with surprising, iron-like strength. "No hospitals. No police. The bullet went straight through. I just need a patch job."

"You're bleeding out on a hotel carpet, Mr. Blackwood. You don't get to give me orders."

"I'll give you five million dollars to shut up and stitch me up."

I froze. "What?"

"There's a medical kit in the bathroom. I know you're a surgeon. Catherine Chen, right? Marcus's little wife." He coughed again, his grip on my wrist tightening. "I've been waiting for you."

Before I could ask what the hell he meant by that, a loud, mechanical click echoed through the room.

I looked over my shoulder. The heavy oak door had just slammed shut. The electronic lock flashed from green to a harsh, blinking red.

I dropped Dorian's wrist and sprinted to the door, yanking on the handle. It didn't budge. I pounded my fists against the wood, screaming for help, but the sound was swallowed by the soundproof walls.

I grabbed my phone. Zero bars. No signal.

I turned back to the bleeding billionaire. He was watching me with those ice-blue eyes, a grim smile on his face.

"Don't bother," he said. "I already tried. The door is on a timer. We're locked in until 8 AM."

"Who did this?" I demanded, my chest heaving.

"Your husband."

I froze. "Marcus? Marcus wouldn't—"

"Marcus sent you that text. He sent me the exact same one." Dorian reached into his pocket with a grimace, tossing his phone across the carpet toward me.

I picked it up. The screen was cracked, but the message was clear.

Room 2807. Come alone. I'll explain everything.

It was the exact same text. Sent at the exact same time.

"He set us up," Dorian said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "He knew you were leaving him. He knew I was closing in on his company. So he put us in a room together to get us out of the way while he cleans house."

"Marcus isn't a criminal," I whispered, though the words felt hollow.

"Marcus is a ghost," Dorian corrected. "His real name is Marcus Webb. He's a serial con artist. He's been married four times before you, Catherine. And every single one of those women is either dead, ruined, or missing. You're number five."

The room tilted. The walls felt like they were closing in. "You're lying."

"I have the documents." He gestured weakly to his discarded briefcase by the window. "He took everything you own. Your house, your joint accounts, even your student loan payouts. He transferred it all three days ago. If we don't get out of this room, he's going to frame us both for a murder he committed tonight. Mine."

Panic clawed at my throat, sharp and suffocating. The perfect marriage. The charming, orphan husband. The sudden business trips. It all crashed down on me at once, a mosaic of red flags I had chosen to ignore for three years.

I had been played. And now, I was going to die in a luxury hotel room with a bleeding stranger.

I looked at Dorian. He was pale, his breathing shallow, but his eyes were sharp. Calculating.

"Can you stitch a wound, Mrs. Chen?" he asked softly.

I swallowed hard. "Yes."

"Then patch me up, and I'll get us out of here." He leaned his head back against the bed, a dark, predatory smirk playing on his lips. "Because I have a feeling your husband is about to burn this building down to cover his tracks. And we're the only two people who can stop him."

I looked at the locked door. I looked at the bleeding billionaire. I looked at the shattered pieces of my life.

Then, I grabbed the hotel sewing kit off the nightstand and walked toward him.

"Deal," I said.

But before I could kneel down, the lights in the room flickered and died.

The room was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

From the hallway outside, I heard the unmistakable sound of heavy boots.

And then, the distinct, terrifying smell of gasoline.
