For the rest of the drive, Max and I travel in companionable silence. He lets me mull over everything in my mind as I consider all that has happened in the last week, from the break-in to finding out shifters exist, and from the sexiest man I’ve ever met claiming to be my soulmate to finding out he’s ill. The wheels in my brain spin and spin and it’s making my head hurt. Massaging my temples, I try to ease the ache that has been growing steadily since we left.

I grab some paracetamol from my purse and swallow them down with a sip of water from the lukewarm bottle of water sitting on the console.

“Leah is coming over. You don’t need to babysit me. I won’t be alone.” I wave my phone at him as the screen flashes with message after message from my way too excited baby sister.

“All the more reason for me to stay around and keep an eye on you. You Walker women attract trouble everywhere you go.”
