ZoeMatt chats away as I pack up my bag and stand to leave, putting a hand against the rough wooden rail beside me to keep my balance. The foal is fine but very nervous and it’s made me feel a bit off my game. I’m still feeling a bit light-headed. I must be coming down with something. Peeking over the side of the stall, Leah is still sitting on a hay bale, petting Matt’s old sheepdog. She has been no help at all. I have no idea why she bothered coming.“Again, thanks for coming out, Zoe. I’m way behind on chores. Is it okay if I head out?” Matt asks, lifting his hat and wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. His smile is warm and friendly, and I’m reminded of what a genuinely nice guy he is. He’ll make someone a great husband.“Of course. I’ll call you in the morning to see how you’re doing.”He tips his hat to me and pushes the stall door open before slipping through. My heart jumps into my throat when I hear Leah’s laughter and a deep rumble that I would recognise anywhere.

Blake Adrenaline pumps through my veins as I take off after Zoe at barely more than a slow jog. Forcing myself to stay in control as she lures me into chasing her, I can hear her footsteps and her panting slightly as she runs. My instincts are screaming at me to catch her and sink my already elongating canines into that soft, pretty neck of hers. But that won’t be happening in a dusty old barn. The cabin I use as my retreat is close by. I wanted to take her there and show it to her because it's my sanctuary. I hope she'll like it there as much as I do. Blake Jenna’s holding the vial out at arm’s length like it’s a hand grenade, ready to explode at any second. My instincts are telling me that there is no antidote, and this is a ruse, but I’m happy to play along and put as much distance between her and my mate as I can. Zoe Tyson never breaks eye contact as he gently rests a hand on my shoulder and waits. And waits some more. Finally, he sits back on his heels, a confounded expression on his face as his order doesn’t have the desired effect. If I wasn’t in so much pain, the frustrated look on his face might be funny. “God, you two really are brothers. Don’t try to pull that crap on me,” I huff, shrugging away his touch as his suspicion turns to amusement. His lip twitches in an almost smile. “Now I get it.” Tyson whistles, looking impressed. Rather than staring at me with the same pity and borderline disdain he had before, he’s curious now. I don’t appreciate the implication that only now does he deem me good enough to be fated to a wolf like Blake. “The alpha command doesn’t work on you?” he asks incredulously. Blake As we near the cabin, I hang back, scouting out the immediate surroundings for any out-of-place scents or disturbances. The woods are silent. The smaller animals and birds have the sense to leave the area. They steer clear and go into hiding, knowing that something dangerous is in their presence. The effect of the drugs on me is getting stronger. My legs feel weak and I’m sweating, despite shivers wracking my body. Zoe's symptoms were instant. I've likely built up a tolerance if this has been going on for months, but this is the worst I've felt. Stopping, I look up at the sky above and the way the branches overhead sway in the gentle breeze that’s kicking up. Feeling detached from my body, I stare, just thinking about how much I love this land. This territory has been my home my entire life.
