Chapter 4: Learning to Pretend

The first time I stood in front of the mirror wearing clothes chosen by someone else, I barely recognized myself.

The dress hugged my body in a way I wasn’t used to—soft cream fabric that fell just below my knees, elegant but understated. My hair had been styled into loose waves, and subtle makeup softened my features. I looked… presentable. Polished.

Like someone who belonged in Adrian Blackwood’s world.

His assistant, Claire, stepped back and studied me critically. “Mr. Blackwood prefers simple elegance,” she said. “No excess. No distractions.”

I nodded, unsure how to respond.

No distractions.

As if I was one.

The drive to the restaurant was quiet. Adrian sat beside me in the back of the car, his presence calm and controlled. The city lights streaked past the window, and I kept my hands folded in my lap to hide their nervous tremble.

“Tonight is straightforward,” he said, breaking the silence. “Smile. Hold my arm. Speak only when spoken to.”

I glanced at him. “And if they ask about us?”

“They won’t,” he replied. “But if they do, let me answer.”

The car came to a stop in front of a discreet, upscale restaurant tucked away from the public eye. As soon as we stepped inside, I felt it—the shift in the air. Conversations lowered. Eyes turned. Whispers followed.

Adrian’s hand settled on the small of my back, guiding me forward.

The touch was brief, professional—but my body reacted instantly, a strange warmth spreading through me. I hated myself for noticing.

“This is my wife, Amara,” Adrian said as we approached a group of well-dressed men and women.

The word wife still didn’t feel real.

Smiles appeared instantly. Compliments followed.

“You’re lovely.”

“She’s perfect for you, Adrian.”

“When did this happen?”

I smiled politely, nodding, playing my part while Adrian answered smoothly, confidently—like this life had always been planned.

At the table, he pulled my chair out for me. The gesture surprised me. So did the way his hand rested lightly on mine when someone made a comment about how well we suited each other.

It was all an act.

And yet… it felt real enough to confuse me.

Throughout dinner, I watched him closely. The way he listened. The way he commanded attention without raising his voice. This was his world, and he ruled it effortlessly.

I wondered who he was when no one was watching.

When dessert arrived, one of the board members leaned closer. “You’re a lucky woman, Amara. Adrian isn’t the kind of man who settles.”

I forced a smile. “I know.”

Adrian’s fingers tightened slightly around mine.

On the drive home, neither of us spoke.

When we entered the penthouse, the illusion shattered. The distance returned instantly, sharp and unmistakable.

“You handled yourself well tonight,” Adrian said, loosening his tie. “You learned quickly.”

“Thank you,” I replied.

He hesitated, then added, “This arrangement will work… if you remember what it is.”

I nodded. “A contract.”

“Yes.”

He turned to leave, but stopped. “Don’t confuse politeness for affection.”

The words stung more than I expected.

Later that night, I stood alone in my room, staring at my reflection. The dress was gone. The makeup wiped away. But the woman in the mirror still looked different.

Not stronger.

Just… changed.

I had learned how to pretend.

And I was terrified of how easily I was getting good at it.

She didn’t.The house felt empty without her presence—too quiet, too large. He made a decision right then.If he was going to lose her, it wouldn’t be because he stayed silent.Ethan canceled his morning meetings, ignoring the surprised protests from his assistant. Instead, he headed straight to the legal wing of the company.Within the hour, he stood across from his head attorney, jaw set.“I want the clause removed,” Ethan said flatly. The attorney blinked. “That clause protects you.”“It cages her,” Ethan replied. “Take it out.”“That could cost the company millions.”“Do it anyway.”Silence followed.“You’re serious,” the attorney said slowly.“I’ve never been more serious.”By the time Ethan left the office, his na

Chapter 23: The Clause That Changed the TruthThe drive back to the mansion felt nothing like the one before dinner. The silence this time was sharp, uncomfortable—cutting deeper with every mile. Aaliyah stared out the window, her reflection faint against the glass, her thoughts spiraling around the words Ethan had dropped so casually.A clause you’ve never seen.“What does the clause say?” she asked again, her voice calm but strained.Ethan tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “It was added by my legal team before the contract was finalized.”“And you didn’t think I deserved to know?” she asked.“I thought it wouldn’t matter,” he said quickly. “The contract was supposed to run its course. Clean. Simple.”Aaliyah let out a short, bitter laugh. “Nothing about this has been simple.”The car pulled into the driveway, but she didn’t move to get out. Neither did he.“The clause states that if either party terminates the marriage before the agreed period,” Ethan said slowly, “there’s a

  • The Contract Bride He Never Wanted   Dinner Without a Contact

Chapter 22: Dinner Without a ContractThe restaurant overlooked the city skyline, its glass walls glowing softly under golden lights. It was elegant but intimate—nothing like the loud, extravagant places Ethan usually entertained business partners.Aaliyah noticed that immediately.“This place is beautiful,” she said as the waiter pulled out her chair.“I thought you’d like it,” Ethan replied, waiting until she was seated before sitting across from her. That simple gesture made her heart stumble. For a moment, they just looked at each other, the space between them unfamiliar without the weight of paperwork, staff, or expectations.“No contracts tonight,” Ethan said quietly. “Just… dinner.”Aaliyah nodded. “Just dinner.”But both of them knew it was more than that.As wine was poured and menus set aside, the tension slowly softened. Ethan asked her about her childhood, her dreams before the marriage, the things she loved but rarely spoke about. And for the first time, he didn’t interru

When sunlight filtered through the curtains, reality rushed back in—along with fear.Kisses don’t rewrite contracts, she reminded herself.Downstairs, the mansion buzzed with quiet activity. Staff moved efficiently, greeting her with polite smiles. But something felt different today. Maybe it was the way her heart refused to calm, or the way she caught herself hoping to see Ethan again. She found him in the dining room, already dressed in a crisp charcoal suit, phone pressed to his ear.“Yes,” he said sharply. “Cancel my morning meeting. I’ll be late.”He looked up and froze when he saw her.The tension from the night before filled the room instantly.“I’ll see you later,” he said into the phone, then ended the call.“Good morning,” Aaliyah said softly.“Good morning,” he replied,

Chapter 20: The Kiss That Changed EverythingThe mansion was unusually quiet that night. The echoes of their footsteps faded as Ethan and Aaliyah walked through the hallway, neither speaking, both painfully aware of how close they were—closer than they had ever been since the day they signed that contract. At the door to her room, Aaliyah stopped.“This is me,” she said softly, her hand resting on the door handle.Ethan nodded, though something in his chest twisted at the thought of walking away. “Good night, Aaliyah.”She turned to face him, searching his expression. “Good night.”She opened the door—but didn’t step inside.Instead, she hesitated, then turned back to him. “Ethan… about what you said in the car.”“Yes?” His voice was low.“I need honesty,” she said. “Not just tonight.
