Chapter 3

作者: Fall for One
“I’m sorry, but the highest-level lockdown on Sacred Heart Hospital came down from above just now. Don Brett personally gave the order.

“All surgeons and OB-GYN staff are ordered to stay in their offices, and the blood bank is locked down. Until he issues a new order, if anyone dares to let her in, their whole family gets dumped in the ocean.”

The paramedic froze. He looked at the doctor inside the glass doors in disbelief.

“Are you people crazy?! This pregnant woman is having a massive traumatic hemorrhage! You're standing there watching two lives die right in front of you!”

The hospital director, Harry Richardson, turned his head away, not daring to look at the tragic sight outside.

“These are Don Brett's rules. If we cross him, this whole hospital won’t exist tomorrow. Drive to another state. Maybe there's still time.”

Another state?

The drive would take at least two hours at top speed. The baby in my belly and I couldn't even wait two minutes.

I pressed my forehead against the cold, reinforced glass, leaving bloody smears as I weakly tapped against the pane.

“Please... open the door… The baby in my belly... really is Brett's...”

“If you just save my baby, I'll do anything you ask... I'm begging you, just go notify him, please...”

The black-clad man guarding the inside scoffed.

“You still dare bring those lies here? Who would dare bother Don Brett? You want to die? Do it somewhere else. Bleeding out on our steps isn't our problem.”

In absolute despair, I pulled out my blood-soaked phone and dialed the string of numbers I knew by heart.

It was Brett's private line, meant to be called only in life-or-death situations.

The phone rang for a long time.

Finally, it connected.

“Brett... save me...” I wept into the receiver, trembling as I clutched my cramping, agonizing abdomen. “Please, tell the hospital to open the doors... our baby can't hold on much longer...”

But there was no deep, familiar voice on the other end, only the crisp clinking of glass cups. Immediately after, Sophia's sickening voice came through the speaker.

“Oh, isn't this the crazy woman who ate glass? What, you followed us to the hospital to beg for trash?”

My blood ran cold.

“Let me speak to Brett... I'm begging you… I'm Erin Valenti... I really am carrying his child...

“If you just let me in to save the baby... I swear I'll never appear in front of you two again. I won't ask for anything, I beg you...”

Sophia burst into a loud, mocking laugh on the line.

“Erin Valenti? Who the hell do you think you are?

"And Brett is taking a shower. He saw that my ear was slightly injured earlier and felt so heartbroken that he insisted on bringing me to his private suite to wrap it up.

"He said it himself. A lowlife like you can live or die on your own luck.

"Bite me, and now you pay the price.”

A cold shudder wracked my body as tears mixed with blood spilled across the phone screen.

“Don't hang up... Sophia, I'll give you my life to make up for it, okay? Just please tell him to save my baby...”

Sophia scoffed into the phone. “Don Brett's child? Keep acting. I’d like to see if anything actually happens to me if I don't save you.”

Then the line was cut off once again.

I scraped against the glass door until my fingers were raw and bloody.

Right then, a choked exclamation from the paramedic broke out beside my ear.

“The fetus has no heartbeat! The mother's vital signs are dropping rapidly!”

The cardiac monitor flatlined into a continuous, deafening wail. Everything belonging to the tiny life inside my belly had come to a complete end.

Though he survived, Brett was mentally and physically hollowed out.I heard he built a crude wooden shack and moved right next to the cemetery. Rain or shine, he spent his days by our baby's tombstone. The mafia empire that once ruled the city collapsed overnight. Without Brett’s terrifying presence to hold it together, rival families rapidly carved up his turf. Some rivals even went to the cemetery looking for him, wanting to take his head as a trophy. But seeing him in that pathetic state, they lost all interest in pulling the trigger. Bored street thugs even tried to humiliate him by spitting on the tombstone right in front of his face.If this were the past, that man would have been chopped up and fed to the dogs. Now, Brett merely wiped the tombstone clean with his shirt, taking their fists and kicks without uttering a single word.He believed he deserved every blow and was using this brutal self-torture to ease the unbearable guilt crushing his heart. But I knew better. He

In the end, I took a taxi to Sacred Heart Hospital—not to save him, but to watch him face his penance. When I reached the ER lobby, those familiar glass doors were still there. Only this time, no men were locking it down. Just a group of healthcare workers stood there, their faces pale with terror.I pushed open the operating room door, and the pungent, metallic stench of blood hit me instantly.Brett was tied to the operating table. His torso was bare, marred by a deep, jagged puncture wound across his abdomen, blood constantly gushing out.Several surgeons stood holding hemostats but didn't dare step forward. Because Brett was holding a scalpel, pressing it straight against his own neck.“If anyone comes closer, I'll die right here,” he growled. Drenched in cold sweat, his face was as pale as paper. As I walked in, his unfocused eyes suddenly lit up, only to dim just as quickly.“Erin, you came.”A grim, twisted smile broke across his face. “You're finally willing to come see

As I turned around and walked toward the gate, Brett immediately rushed forward to meet me. He held a thick envelope, his voice terrifyingly raspy.“Erin, these are all the assets, trust funds, and several overseas estates in my name. They've all been transferred to you.“Take this money, leave this city, and go wherever you want.” He held the envelope out in front of me, his hands trembling violently.“I know you don't want to see me. But just take it... please. Let me do this much.”I didn't take it, nor did I knock it to the ground. I just stared quietly at the file, finding the whole thing absurd.“Do you think giving me these things will take away any of the pain from losing my baby?” My voice was quiet, yet every word bled with sorrow. The bodyguards watched us nervously, but Brett glared at them so fiercely that they backed down instantly.“I don't want it.”I looked past the envelope, my eyes fixed on his.“I'm staying right here to watch you. I want to see how you, a

The cold-blooded tyrant who made other mafia families tremble in fear was now bowing his head, as humble and broken as a child who had done something unforgivable. But he didn't understand. After losing her baby, a mother no longer cared about life or death.“Brett, as I lay bleeding on those cold steps, I thought back to seven years ago.” I stared at him with hollow eyes.“You took three bullets to the gut back then, and I stayed by your side for three whole days. When you woke up, you promised nothing would ever touch me or our baby.“You kept your word. Outsiders really couldn't touch us.”I looked at him, tears finally slipping down my face without a sound. “Because the one who killed our baby was you.”In agonizing pain, Brett clutched his head as his knees sank back into the freezing snow. He slammed his fists into the hard ground again and again, his knuckles quickly turning into a bloody, mangled mess.“I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry… I really didn't know it was you two… I

He looked at my mouth, covered in blood and split lips. Then, his gaze drifted to my twisted, broken right leg and the dark red blood soaking through the hem of my coat.“What happened to your leg? And why's your mouth covered in blood?” His voice shook violently as he reached out a hand, trying to touch me.I turned my head away calmly, dodging his touch.“To calm your Sophia down, they forced me to eat all the broken glass off the ground,” I said in a light, nonchalant tone, as if I were telling someone else's story.“I thought if I just ate it, the doctors would be allowed out to save my baby… Brett, I did everything they asked, but you still didn't let them out.”Brett's eyes welled up with tears. Guilt tore through him, choking out whatever composure he had left.He threw his head back, letting out a roar of absolute despair before drawing his sidearm from his waist. Turning around, he faced the henchmen who had blocked me.A rapid succession of gunshots rang out. Before t

“Erin, what on earth happened?! You're pregnant—why are you here?!”I finally raised my head and looked at this man, the one I had once loved to my very core. The excruciating pain and blood loss had drained every ounce of strength from my body, leaving nothing inside my heart but emptiness.“Why am I here?” The corners of my pale lips twitched upward into a faint, bitter smile.“Brett, wasn't it you who personally gave the order to seal off that entire street?”I swallowed the coppery taste of blood in my throat, my voice eerily calm as I spoke.“I went out shopping, and Sophia’s car ran into me. I wouldn't stop bleeding.“I called you for help, begging you to tell the hospital to open its doors and save our baby. But you were too busy fussing over her minor scratches.“Your henchmen told me through that glass door that if anyone dared to bother you, their whole family would be thrown into the ocean.”Every drop of color drained from Brett’s face.“No… I didn't know… Sophia
