Chapter 2

Penulis: Spinach
The perfume lingering on his body was a sweet scent unique to women. It was obvious just where he had spent the past two days.

Charles offered no explanation and just gave me a smile. He did not bother hiding the mockery in his eyes.

“Lulu, do you think I’ve crossed the line? But you’re even worse. You chose me because I was the next best thing, but you still like Ethan, don’t you?”

It had been three years since then, so when I heard Ethan Lawson’s name, I could not associate the name with him right away.

It was only when I saw the vindictive look on Charles’s face that I came to a realization.

Charles was still bothered by the fact that I had studied abroad to chase after Ethan.

His next words hit where it hurt. “If you really want to divorce me, why don’t we go to your parents’ house first and ask for their opinion?”

My adopted parents’ stern faces rose unbidden to the forefront of my mind. They were followed by rebukes and insults.

I clenched my fists and felt a chill down my spine.

When I looked at Charles again, his smile had turned even more malicious. In an instant, I came to realize many things.

“Is this revenge, Charles?”

He readily admitted it and told me blatantly that this was just the beginning. “Since you don’t love me, I’m going to make you suffer.”

With that said, he got up and left the room.

I caressed my belly and tore apart the pregnancy report I had prepared to show him as a surprise.

Charles’ threats were not empty. A few days later, he brought his lover and her son back home.

The three of them sat on the couch in the living room. Charles played with the boy in his arms, while Susan Niel, his affair partner, sat by the side. She had a gentle look on her face and was smiling happily.

When I came downstairs, the homely scene made me feel embarrassed, like I was an intruder.

Susan was the first to notice me. Her smile faded, and, feeling uneasy, she tugged at Charles’s sleeve.

Charles looked up and stood up while holding the boy.

He pinched the boy’s cheek and said softly, “Zach, say hello to the lady.”

Zach looked at me shyly before he greeted me sweetly, “Hello, Ma’am.”

I did not think that I was angry. All I felt was grief. It was as if there was a heavy stone on my chest, and I could not breathe.

Feeling awkward, I stood where I was while grimacing. I opened my mouth, but I did not know what to say.

Charles wiggled his eyebrows at me, as if this interested him greatly, and he loved watching me being put on a spot.

While he continued delighting in my misery, I went upstairs like a loser running away.

When I was about to go to bed, Charles knocked on my door.

After putting a glass of warm milk by my bed, he sat down as if nothing had happened and stared at me silently.

I met his gaze squarely and tried to see whether there was any emotion in his eyes.

But aside from indifference, I saw nothing.

The staring contest lasted until I asked, “What exactly do you want, Charles?”

He did not want to divorce me, but brought his ex and illegitimate son over to boast about them.

Did my grief and embarrassment bring him joy from his successful revenge?

“I want to see you suffer,” he said matter-of-factly. Even though he was smiling, he teared up.

I smiled bitterly and said in resignation, “You win, then.”

“Is that so?” Charles growled and grabbed my wrist. His gaze was as cold as that of a viper.

“Are you hurting because I’m with another woman, or because you have no other choice but to be with me?

“Are you thinking about Ethan now? Unfortunately for you, he never fell in love with you despite you trying to win his heart for six years.”

  • The Crush Decided To Quit   Chapter 11

I felt my heart flutter. When I looked at Ethan at that moment, he was more handsome than at any other moment in the past. “Want to try dating, Ethan?”During the year I dated Ethan, my fondness for him accumulated bit by bit and eventually turned to love. He supported me in doing all that I wanted to do and even traveled with me all across Europe during the holidays. Christmas rolled around again, and I agreed to his proposal. He told his family about my situation and that we would be having our wedding abroad. We were also not inviting the Willow family. Ethan’s family had almost given up hope on Ethan ever getting married by this point, so they were delighted when they heard that it was actually happening. They let him decide where and how he wanted his wedding held. In the end, we chose a vineyard as our wedding venue, and we sent the invitations to our friends and family via email. Two days before our wedding, I went to visit the vineyard with Ethan, and we ran in

“I know that you tried getting closer to me because of the Willow family. You were in a difficult position, but I was stubborn and couldn’t understand you. I just kept obsessing over whether you really liked me or not, but I didn’t have the courage to ask you about it. When you said that you didn’t actually love me, I was pretty angry.“I’m sorry. I should have made myself clear.”Ethan’s face had turned completely red by the time he finished speaking, and it took a moment for his words to finally sink in. Heat pooled on my cheeks.I always thought that Ethan was annoyed with me. After he made himself clear, I did not know how to react. But how could someone like me be worthy of his love? Was it because of my face?Ethan soon gave me an answer to my question. “I don’t know.”Wow. He might as well have said nothing. He giggled, as if he was remembering something. “I’ll be honest. I’ve noticed you earlier than you noticed me.”During the holiday before high school, Ethan and hi

“It’s cold. Don’t fall sick now,” Ethan said. After some thinking, I said, “Okay. You too.”On Christmas Eve, I cleaned myself up and went out to meet Ethan, only to run into him soon after I left my house. He stood under the streetlight and waved at me while smiling. White fog spread in front of him. At that moment, he looked like someone who had walked straight out of a dreamlike fairy tale. I asked him why he came over, and he said smoothly, “I seldom come to this area. Since I had time, I decided to come over for a stroll. Let’s go.”“Okay.” We walked together. The snow crunched under our feet, and it was strangely silent between us. We walked all the way to the restaurant, and the warm temperature inside made my tense nerves relax. Even so, Ethan and I exchanged no words. Since he said nothing, I was not going to say anything either. When we started eating, he broke the silence and said something strange. “You’ve changed a lot.”When I remembered how much I had

  • The Crush Decided To Quit   Chapter 8

Ethan was the center of everyone’s attention in high school. He was handsome, had good grades, and won practically every competition he took part in. Plenty of people had a crush on him, but most of them did not dare to confess. I was the only one who did and continued pestering him even after he rejected me multiple times. In the beginning, he rejected me by saying that he wanted to focus on studying, but later on, he got annoyed by me constantly bothering him and blatantly stated that he was irritated by my very presence. At that time, Charles very blatantly showed his love to me as well, and he would even feel indignant for me when Ethan gave me the cold shoulder. Once, after I was rejected and my scores caused me to slide down two ranks on the ranking board, Jake and Helen yelled at me. When I went to school the next day, I was off my game. Charles saw this and blamed it on Ethan. He went to argue about it with him, and the two of them got into a fight. I went up to sto

Every single time Jake and Helen punished me, Cain acted smug and hit me behind their backs to vent his anger. “You’re just a dog we’re keeping,” he said to me. But dogs also bit back when they were cornered. I retorted, “You know very well whether I lived a good life while under your roof.”“You…” Cain was rendered speechless. Even after a long time passed, he did not manage to say anything meaningful. So, he decided to switch tactics. If he could not force me to go back, he could persuade me to do that instead. He cleared his throat awkwardly and started patiently trying to convince me to marry Samuel. “You didn’t get anything from your divorce. What are you going to do if you don’t get married? Live off your savings? Dad and Mom are doing this for your own good. If you marry Mr. Stane, you won’t even need to give birth. All you’ll need to do is be a rich wife. Plenty of women dream of having such a life.”“Heh.” I snickered and mocked him mercilessly, “When have you st

Even my acceptance of Charles’s confession after I came back was due to him being my best choice back then. During the three years of our marriage, I finally began falling in love with him, but he killed that love with his own hands. I had repaid all that I owed to the Willow family. No one could control me anymore. After my divorce, I became a free, independent adult, and that was exactly what I wanted. I packed up my things and moved to a hotel, then had a real-estate agent put the house on sale. Before long, Charles called me. I had to admit that I hesitated for a moment, but I still answered. He began questioning me right away. “You’re selling the house, Lulu?”“Yes,” I said. “Can’t I?”After a while, he yelled, “Is money all you care about?”He was angry at me, but I did not want to defend myself anymore and just answered coolly, “Yeah.”Charles hung up, and I blocked him. Weekend rolled around, and Helen called me to come home. I lay on the hotel bed and said
