Chapter 1 A Private Room Full of Lies

Author: NJ Boss
My left cheek still burned, while the sounds of Julian and Elena's panting drifted from the private room.

The sticky splash of bodies and the dull thud of flesh against flesh were mixed with the crowd's suggestive whispers. They slithered into my ears like venomous snakes.

"Wow, that's surprising. Mr. Zane always looks so proper, but he's pretty passionate with his sister."

"What sister? Looks more like a lover to me."

"With Julian's status, so what if she were his sister?"

I mechanically poured drink after drink down my throat. It burned, but it was nothing compared to the pain crushing my chest.

The door to the private room suddenly swung open.

Julian stepped out, his clothes in disarray.

His shirt hung wide open, exposing a chest covered in scratch marks. Fresh, red kiss marks stood out against his neck.

Elena clung to him as if she weighed nothing, wrapped only in his suit jacket. The insides of her thighs were smeared with something unmistakable.

"Julian, you're amazing," she said sweetly, deliberately brushing her lipstick against his collarbone. "Nora, you're so lucky."

A chorus of whistles exploded around us.

Julian noticed me and reached out, but his body still reeked of sex. The scent clung to him, thick and cloying.

I jerked back, knocking over a bottle behind me.

The sound of shattering glass cut through the room, and everything went silent.

"Disgusting," I heard myself say.

My voice echoed sharply in the sudden quiet. Frost crept over Julian's expression. "Do you really have to act like this? You know Elena's situation is special."

I let out a cold laugh and pointed at the fresh hickey on Elena's neck. "Special? So, you had to personally jump in and 'treat' her? Julian, this little incest drama of yours is really something."

"Nora, would Elena even be like this if it weren't for you?" he snapped. "Besides, it's just my first time. Once we're married, you can have as many as you want!"

I clapped slowly and raised my glass. "Congratulations, Mr. Zane, on losing your virginity. I wish you and your sister a long and happy life together."

Julian's impatience finally snapped. "Nora, can you stop already? Elena is just my sister!"

Elena suddenly whimpered softly. "Julian, I don't feel well again…"

He turned around at once. As he walked away, he tossed a light remark over his shoulder, "Nora, go buy a box of condoms. The biggest size."

With his arm around Elena, he headed back to the private room, then added, "And get some fever medicine. Elena's temperature is a bit on the higher side. Also, don't say things like that again. Elena doesn't like it."

I grabbed a bottle and hurled it at the wall. Glass shards flew, slicing across the back of my hand.

Blood dripped down my wrist, yet I felt nothing.

It was true that when despair reached its peak, pain disappeared.

I stumbled out of the room.

By the time I returned to the villa, it was nearly midnight.

I threw up violently in the bathroom until a shrill ringtone shattered the silence.

The name "Zelda" flashed on the screen, blindingly bright.

Only then did I realize I had passed out on the bathroom floor after vomiting.

"Nora! The wedding's about to start! Where are you?" A sharp female voice screeched through the phone. "I knew it. You're just an ill-mannered and poor nobody with no background. If Julian hadn't insisted on marrying you, I never would've agreed!"

"Mrs. Zane, have Julian and Elena arrived?" I asked quietly,

The shouting paused for a moment. "Aren't you the bride? Shouldn't you be getting ready? Julian's exhausted. He stayed up night after night, convincing relatives to come. Isn't it normal for him to sleep in a bit?"

"Your son is busy in bed with his adopted sister," I cut in, my voice hoarse and unrecognizable. "Would you like to hear a recording from the scene?"

Dead silence fell on the other end, then came an even more piercing scream. "What nonsense are you talking about? Elena and Julian are perfectly innocent—"

I hung up and looked at the wedding decorations that filled the room.

The decorations I had stayed up late to set up glowed painfully bright in the morning light, as if mocking my foolishness.

My fingers brushed the wedding photo on the wall. A thin crack suddenly split the glass. So, even the frame pitied me.

I tore the decorations down in a daze, not realizing tears were already falling.

Because I was an orphan, Zelda had always despised me. Nothing I ever did was enough to get me into her good graces. Back then, Julian would pull me into his arms and tell me it didn't matter. As long as he loved me, that was enough.

I was so stupid.

I never saw how Julian's care for Elena went far beyond brotherly affection. The man I thought was my salvation had slept with his adopted sister right in front of me.

  • The Cure Cost Him His Fiancée   Chapter 7 The Door That Shouldn't Have Opened

I never expected Julian to show up in my life once more. I had been sitting on the living room floor with my daughter, reading a picture book with her, while Mark cooked in the kitchen.Suddenly, a knock came at the door. I set Harper down and went to answer it, only to come face-to-face with an unwanted guest. It had been years since we last saw one another. He was almost unrecognizable. His eyes looked sunken, and his face thin. The man who had once exuded confidence had vanished, replaced with one who was hollow-eyed and weary to the bone. When he saw me, tears immediately spilled down his cheeks. His trembling hand reached for my face, never quite touching. It seemed that he was afraid that I would disappear if he did, whispering, "Nora, I've finally found you…"I looked at him calmly, acting as if he were a stranger. "Can I help you?"Perhaps it was the coldness in my gaze that struck him, because Julian choked back a sob. "Nora, it's all my fault. I'll hold another wedding.

The sterile smell of disinfectant in the hospital room hit me like a splash of cold water. The moment I came to was also the moment I realized I had nearly died. The doctor even told me that I might not have made it if I had arrived just half an hour later."The patient is suffering from severe gastric bleeding, rib fractures, and a punctured lung…" The doctor's words filtered through my foggy mind as he spoke to the nurses. "Surgery is required immediately…"After my operation, I couldn't help but chuckle as I stared up at the painfully white hospital ceiling. It seemed that there was a nugget of truth wherein one would be able to see things in a different light after walking through death's door. The branches of the sycamore swayed in the wind outside the window, casting mottled shadows across the room.I suddenly remembered that rainy day five years ago. Julian had stood under a sycamore, tilting the umbrella entirely toward me. He'd rather have his body soaked just to keep me

A month had passed, and Nora's phone remained switched off.Julian searched the entire city for her.He went to the coffee shops she frequented, her favorite bookstores, even back to the college campus where they first met.But the figure that had always greeted him with a gentle smile seemed to have vanished from the world entirely. On his birthday, Julian canceled every meeting and waited from dawn until deep into the night. He remembered how Nora would make him a bowl of noodles every year, smiling as she promised to spend every birthday with him.…When the midnight bell finally tolled, Julian dialed her number for what felt like the thousandth time.A mechanical voice answered, cold and detached. "The number you have dialed is switched off…"He sank to his knees in despair. It felt as though he had truly lost Nora forever. The next day, Elena complained of a headache. So, Julian frantically drove her to the hospital for a check-up.When she was wheeled into the examina

The hospital corridor lights were harsh and blinding. Julian paced back and forth, irritation written all over his face. The doctor had said Elena was out of danger. Yet, the unease in his chest only grew stronger. He pulled out his phone and stared at the call log—the call he had cut off himself.Nora's weak voice echoed in his mind. "J-Julian…"How had he failed to hear the pain in her voice?12 hours had passed by now. Nora should have replied by now. It wasn't like her to do this even if she was angry. He impulsively dialed her number. After a long ring, a cold electronic voice answered, "The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable…"His heart sank. Julian suddenly stood up and hurried toward the exit.Just then, Elena grabbed his hand from the hospital bed. "Julian, I had a nightmare…"Her voice rose sharply, and tears instantly pooled in her eyes. "Julian, this is all my fault. That's why Nora—""Don't overthink it," he said, forcing a smile.Yet Nora's fina

"Nora, I'm sorry. This is all my fault," Elena said softly. "I know you hate me for taking Julian away. You can hit me if it'll make you feel better."The words sounded repentant, but malice flickered in her eyes.I watched her coldly, unimpressed by the clumsy act. Suddenly, I saw her suddenly lose her balance and fall straight onto the shattered glass."Ah! Julian!" she screamed, lifting her bleeding arm.Julian charged over like an enraged lion and slammed his foot into my stomach.I flew into the coffee table. A sharp pain ripped through my ribs, and my vision went dark."Nora didn't do it on purpose, Julian. I'm fine," Elena said weakly. "She's just upset. Julian, go comfort her."Julian roared at me as he gently gathered Elena into his arms. "Nora, how can you be this vicious? Elena is my sister. How dare you do this to her!" He said to her, "Don't be afraid. I'm taking you to get bandaged right now!"Then, he turned to me. "I'll make you pay if she scars!"I curled up

  • The Cure Cost Him His Fiancée   Chapter 2 A Ring That Changed Hands

My phone kept buzzing as congratulations poured in.I replied to friends and family on autopilot, saying that the wedding was canceled. I was also ready to return every wedding gift, one by one. Then, a new notification popped up on my social feed.Elena had posted a close-up photo of two hands tightly intertwined, fingers locked. The caption read, 'Julian's scent is the most comforting thing in the world.'Julian replied underneath with a hugging emoji.I stared at the bruises circling her wrist in the photo and suddenly laughed out loud. How ironic. The engagement ring I had chosen myself was now shining on someone else's finger.I commented under the post. Elena's video call came through almost instantaneously. On the screen, Julian's bare chest was covered in scratch marks. Elena curled up against him like a cat, deliberately exposing the bite mark on her shoulder."Nora." Her voice was sickly sweet. She ran her fingers over Julian's abs as if showing off. "Julian's exhau
