Chapter 7

Penulis: Miss Sunny
Aria's POV

"I told the police everything," I said, staring at the thick file on my bed. "I hit a guy who put his hands on his girlfriend."

I refused to let Dominic dig into my past. A year ago, I walked into my cramped apartment after that dark alley encounter.

I found Daniel pushing Jasmine against a wall. He tried to force a kiss. I swung hard and broke his nose.

Jasmine panicked and kicked him in the ribs. Daniel ended up in the hospital. Jasmine was still in college.

I took the blame so her record stayed clean.

Dominic watched me. His dark blue eyes gave nothing away.

"The sleeping pill investigation is paused," he said with a flat voice. "I hired a team to recover the wiped camera data. The lab is pulling fingerprints off the plastic bottle."

My chest tightened. "You still think I did it."

"You are a suspect. But Luca screams if anyone else holds him." He tapped the folder against his leg. "You keep your job, Aria. For now."

He turned and walked out.

I stared at the closed door.

Why did he explain his plan to me?

A brutal mafia boss would just lock me in a basement and throw away the key.

Dominic Valentino used logic. He relied on evidence.

I realized he was not a cruel monster. He was just a man protecting his son.

The next few days fell into a strange routine.

Jasmine stayed away from the estate. She spent her hours buying designer clothes and getting spa treatments.

With me and Luca out of her sight, Jasmine felt safe.

I learned the layout of the massive house. I also noticed a glaring detail.

Jasmine's bedroom was down the hall from the nursery. Dominic slept in the master suite on the opposite side of the estate. They did not share a bed.

A heavy knot in my stomach loosened at that thought. I pushed the feeling away and focused on Luca.

Thursday afternoon brought warm sunlight. I sat on a blanket in the manicured garden, letting Luca grab at the green grass. He giggled. The bright sound made me smile.

"Well, this is a beautiful sight."

I looked up. A man leaned against the stone fountain.

He had messy brown hair, an expensive linen suit, and a lazy grin. He shared Dominic's sharp jawline, but his energy was loose and playful.

"Are you lost?" I asked, pulling Luca closer to my chest.

The man laughed. He walked over and sat on the grass right next to me.

"I live here. Sometimes. I am Marco. Dominic's cousin." He leaned in, his blue eyes dropping to my lips. "And who is the stunning woman holding my little nephew?"

"I am the nanny," I said, ignoring his charm.

"A tragedy," Marco sighed, touching a lock of my hair. "A face like yours belongs on a magazine cover, not hidden in a nursery."

I slapped his hand away. Marco just laughed harder.

That night, the house filled with people. Dominic hosted a welcome-back dinner for Marco.

The dining room glowed with crystal chandeliers. I stayed near the back hallway, keeping a sleepy Luca quiet in my arms.

Marco drank wine and told loud stories about his trip to Europe. Jasmine sat near Dominic. She tried to hold his hand. Dominic kept his hands flat on the table.

After dinner, a string quartet started playing in the grand hall. Guests moved to the dance floor.

Marco spotted me by the stairs. He set his drink down and walked over.

"Give the baby to a maid," Marco said, holding out his hand. "Dance with me."

"I am working, Marco," I said.

Jasmine appeared out of the crowd. Her eyes sparkled with malice. She wanted me gone. A rich, playboy cousin was the perfect distraction.

"Oh, Aria, go ahead," Jasmine said with a sweet smile. "You work too hard. Marco is a great catch. You're my cousin. He's Dom's cousin. Maybe you two will fall in love and get married. I will watch Luca."

She reached for the baby. Luca whimpered and turned his face into my neck. He gripped my shirt tight.

Marco grinned. "See? The baby is fine. My future bride needs a dance."

He grabbed my free hand. He pulled me toward the center of the hall. The music swelled. I tried to pull back, but Marco spun me around.

A large hand clamped over Marco's wrist.

The movement was so fast I gasped. Dominic stood between us. His face was carved from stone. The air around him felt heavy and cold.

He shoved Marco's hand away. Dominic wrapped his arm around my waist. He pulled me flush against his side.

"She has to take care of Luca tonight," Dominic said, his voice a low, vibrating threat. "She is going nowhere."

The music played, but the room went still.

Marco lowered his hands. His lazy smile vanished. He stared at Dominic's arm wrapped tight around my waist.

Marco's eyes flicked to my face, then back to his cousin.

"Dom," Marco said. "Is that how you look at a nanny?"

Aria's POVWe reached the altar. The priest spoke the traditional vows. He asked for the wedding bands.A soft murmur rippled through the front rows.A tiny figure stepped out from the side pew. Luca wore a custom black tuxedo that matched his father's suit perfectly. He was just over a year old. He waddled down the carpet, his little legs unsteady but determined. He held a small velvet pillow tight against his chest. He reached my legs and looked up. A massive, gummy smile lit up his chubby face."Mama!" Luca babbled, his high-pitched voice echoing in the quiet church.Tears spilled over my eyelashes. I crouched down, ignoring the expensive silk dress, and kissed his soft cheek. I took the rings from the pillow. Dominic lifted our son into his arms, holding him as he slid the solid diamond band onto my left ring finger."I belong to you," Dominic vowed. "Until my last breath."Three years later. The Valentino syndicate boardroom occupied the top floor of a towering glass skyscraper.

Aria's POVI obeyed. He draped the silk over my eyes and knotted it behind my head. The darkness heightened my senses. I smelled the faint trace of scotch and his signature bergamot."Dom? Where are we going?""A drive," he replied, taking my hand.We rode in the back of the SUV. The hum of the engine vibrated beneath the leather seats. I tracked the turns, feeling the vehicle head deep into the city. The car stopped. The heavy door clicked open. Cold, crisp air rushed over my bare arms. Dominic guided me out, his hands firm on my waist. He stood behind me. He untied the silk knot.I blinked against the sudden glow. We stood in a narrow, brick-lined space.I recognized the cracked concrete beneath my feet. This was the alley behind the dirty street bar where I worked a year ago. The exact spot where I saved a dying man.But it looked completely different. Hundreds of warm string lights hung overhead, casting a soft gold glow over the old brick walls. The back entrance of the seedy bar

Aria's POVI stopped two feet away. I held the umbrella over my head. The rain washed the world in a dull, gray haze."The Fontaines threw me out," Jasmine sobbed, her body shivering violently. "Victor's men took my jewelry. The banks froze all my accounts. I have no money for a hotel. I slept in a bus station last night, Aria. A homeless man tried to steal my coat!"I stared at her. My chest felt hollow. I felt no anger. I felt no pity."Please, sister," Jasmine begged. She slid down the iron bars, falling to her knees again. Thick tears washed the dirt down her cheeks. "Remember when we were little? You promised mom you would protect me. You swore you would take care of me. I am sorry! I was stupid. I was greedy. Just let me inside. Let me see Luca. I will be the nanny. I will clean the floors. Just do not let me die out here!"She played her final card. The family bond. The guilt trip that kept me chained to her for ten long years.I reached into my coat pocket. I pulled out a thic

Aria's POV"I cannot," I whispered, keeping my eyes on the open ledger. "Your father gave me a test. I am going to ace it. And don't help me cheat. My father was a good actuary before he died in an accident. I am his most proud student.""I know it. I know you can do it."Dominic leaned down. His warm breath brushed the side of my neck. He pressed a soft, open-mouthed kiss just below my jawline. The stubble on his chin scraped my skin, sending a rush of liquid heat straight to my core.He bit my collarbone. "Let the old man wait. Come upstairs."I gripped the edge of the desk. My body begged to follow him. The dark hunger in his voice was a physical pull. I closed my eyes, savoring the feeling of his lips on my neck."Dom," I breathed."Yes." His hands slid down my arms, tracing my sides until his fingers brushed the underside of my breasts."Wait! Look at this page," I said, forcing my eyes open. I tapped a specific column of faded red ink.Dominic groaned in frustration. He pulled his

Aria's POVDominic stepped forward. "Chase. Gather the USB drive. Take her to the police station.""No," I said, catching his arm.Dominic frowned, looking down at me. "Why do you still have pity for her?""Prison is too easy," I replied, staring at the pathetic figure crying in the rain. "She wanted to be a rich mafia princess. Let her chase what she wants. She may regret it."Dominic stared into my eyes. He nodded once. He ordered the guards to shut the heavy oak doors, leaving Jasmine completely alone in the freezing downpour.I watched her go. My chest felt light. The ten-year nightmare was over. I owed her nothing.Dominic turned to me. The cold mafia boss disappeared. He reached out and cupped my cheek. His thumb stroked my skin."Are you hurt?" he asked.I shook my head. I looked up into his blue eyes. "Where is Luca?""Upstairs," Dominic said. "He is safe. He is waiting for his mother."He took my hand. We walked up the grand staircase together. The house was quiet. We pushed o

I raised my chin and glared right into Victor Fontaine's eyes."I will fight you in every court," I promised, my voice ringing loud and clear. "I will hire my own experts. I will expose the forgery.
