Chapter 3 It's Not Worth It

ผู้เขียน: Ash Devon
My head buzzed, and I froze. I worked myself to the bone for Tina's family for two years. I pulled one all-nighter after another just to help her. I was so tired that fainting from exhaustion had become another Tuesday for me.

Even so, I never complained because I did it all for her.

She used to worry about my working too much, so she made supplements for me every day. She had never cooked once in her life, but she would do it for my sake. In the beginning, her hands were always covered in burns and cuts. Yet, she never once complained.

Now, she had just hit me for a fake heir who'd stolen my life for 20 years.

Mr. Zimmer couldn't take that lying down, not even for a second. He shoved Tina away and stood with me. "Oi, you could've talked it out! There's no need for violence! And you expect Mr. Damian to say sorry? If anything, it's you who's gone too far!"

"How dare you shove Tina!" Chris roared, seeing the perfect chance to play the knight in shining armor. Then, he swung his fist at Mr. Zimmer's temple.

He was trained in boxing two years ago, while Mr. Zimmer wasn't as young as he once was. If this punch were to connect, he'd have to be hospitalized. I couldn't allow one of mine to be pushed around.

"Look out!" My pupils narrowed, and I charged ahead to push Mr. Zimmer away. Alas, Chris didn't stop. So, the punch connected with my shoulder. My left shoulder screamed in agony.

It was clear Chris hadn't pulled his punches. It hurt so bad that I thought my bones were breaking.

Pain was making me sweat, but I raised my good hand and punched Chris in the kisser in retaliation.

"Stop! Stop!" The other guys, who were working overtime, noticed the commotion and rushed to pull us apart.

Chris quickly covered his face and gasped in pain. "My face! It hurts! Tell me I'm not disfigured, Mom!" His eyes were red and glistening with tears. Apparently, the pain was so bad that it nearly made him cry. He certainly went crying for Mommy.

Tina and my mother quickly went over to him, but they didn't even spare me a glance.

My mother gently wiped his perfectly unscathed face, but her eyes were filled with heartbreak. "Don't be silly! You're my perfect boy. You'd never be disfigured."

I was her biological son.

I held my shoulder and looked at Tina. I thought she would at least show some concern, but she didn't.

"Must you do this, Damian?" The look of disappointment in her eyes hit me hard. "He just took over, and you're already here leading your men to flex on him. Must you turn the company into a battlefield?"

Mr. Zimmer only spoke for me because he couldn't stand seeing me getting insulted, but this woman thought I was the one starting the fight.

"He started it! Are you seriously going to ignore that and make up your own conclusions?" I stared at Tina in disbelief.

Chris was lying in my mother's embrace. He held Tina's hand, still looking hurt. "This is all my fault. I just came home, and these people have worked for Damian forever. Of course, they won't listen to me."

"You're a very impulsive man, Damian." Tina frowned at me.

"You disappoint me," my mother said sternly. "Give all your work and client details to Chris from tomorrow onward. Don't get in our way. If I knew you'd turn out the way you are, I'd never have taken you back."

They were making me and Mr. Zimmer look like the villains here. It had been two years. I tried my best to blend into the family for two years, to help Tina. I'd never gotten a good night's sleep just to gain their approval. In the end, they still saw me as a useless outsider.

Mr. Zimmer held up my nearly dislocated arm and rasped softly, "Let's go, Mr. Damian. This place isn't worth it."

I nodded. My voice was equally soft as I murmured, "Yeah."

Having a wedding blessed by my parents under the aurora borealis of Frostground was nothing but a fantasy I had. Now, that dream had burst into bubbles. It was time for me to wake up.

I had my injuries tended at the hospital. It was already late at night when I was done. I declined Mr. Zimmer's offer to take me home. Then, I went back to the house Tina and I bought for our marriage.

I wanted to take back my stuff and bury the two years behind me, but I heard a repressed moan coming from the main bedroom as soon as I entered. "W-We can't do this, Chris."

My hand froze in midair.

"You're tied to me forever," Chris stated with a leer."No! You're lying! No, you demon! I can't believe I betrayed Damian for filth like you! I'll kill you!" Tina had a total meltdown. She screamed at the top of her lungs as she pounced at Chris, clawing at his face like she wanted to rip it to shreds."My life has just begun. It was just about to get good… You ruined yourself, and you dragged me with you! You ruined me! I'll kill you, you bastard!"Chris cackled. "Kill me, and you'll be digging a grave for yourself!"The fight quickly devolved into a brawl. The brawl rampaged through the claustrophobic living room, and the two shattered the window on the way. They both fell from the fifth floor. Chris died on the spot, while Tina suffered heavy injuries and was arrested. Her company went bust.As she lay on the hospital bed, she cried and pleaded with the cops to see me one last time.I went to visit her. We were separated by a layer of glass in the prison's visiting room. Sh

My mother grabbed Chris' arms and questioned him in disbelief, "It's true? He joined Skycloud?"Chris said yes, albeit reluctantly. My mother was thunderstruck. After Skycloud pulled out, countless partners canceled their contracts as well. It had been weighing on her heavily. She tried to seek help everywhere, but no one gave her a moment of their time.Mr. Zimmer twisted the knife in deeper. "I've told you that changing the person in charge for the project would ruin things, ma'am, but you didn't listen."My mother staggered and almost fell. "Damian, my son…"I didn't even bother looking at her. Instead, I waved at my buddies. "I'll get you registered today, guys!""Awesome! You're the best, Damian!"My buddies huddled around me as we walked out of the company.Chris held my wobbling mother and said jealously, "That's nothing! I can do whatever he can…"My mother used all her strength and slapped him, her hand shaking. "You can't! Can you change Mr. Lawson's mind and give us

Dead silence descended upon the office for a moment before a collective, explosive cheer shook the ground."Skycloud? The leading company in Pierton? Am I dreaming?""So, that's why they pulled that deal back! It's because you're already working with them, Mr. Damian!" Mr. Zimmer's voice was shaking with excitement as he smacked his thighs in realization. "Mr. Lawson specified that you be the person in charge. But you left, so they don't need the Riverson Group anymore!"I gave him a nod with a smile. My reaction was as much of a confession."Whoa, that's great! Congratulations on making your way into their HQ, Damian!""I don't think my resume would even get me through their front doors! You've just given us the opportunity of our lifetime, Damian!""We'll go with you, Damian!"Everyone's eyes lit up with excitement, as if they could see a bright future waiting for them."What's with all the ruckus? Do you want to get fired?" The commotion caught my mother's attention. When

Back when Tina's father fell ill and left his company without a leader, the debt collectors promptly came knocking. They thought Tina didn't have what it took to repay the debts, so they tried to take her overseas and shove her into the sex industry to repay her debts. That industry was hell for a lot of people. If she were to be forced into it, she knew that her body would be ruined, and she'd contract a lot of STDs. Tina cried from the shock and begged for mercy.I promised the debt collectors that I would pay in her stead. I even swore it on the Riverson name. I defended her through their suspicion and leers. Even so, they broke my left hand before they deigned to give us an extension. And now? Well. Tina fell silent before raising her head to look at me. Her eyes were red and filled with despair.…Three days later, I arrived as promised. Mr. Zimmer was the first guy I spotted the second I set foot inside Helman Group. He was in a mismatched janitor's attire with his back hu

Unfortunately for him, two burly bodyguards darted ahead and pinned both his arms before he could even get on stage. "Let go! How dare you touch me, you mutts!" He thrashed and flailed his legs as he cussed the bodyguards out.Neil snorted and shot him a look of scorn. "I see you have quite the temper, Chris. Also, you think someone like you could handle my company's project? I specifically asked for Damian when I signed the papers, not some fake who would steal someone else's credit."Now that Damian is working with me, I hereby declare that the Skycloud-Riverson contract is officially cancelled, and that Chris Riverson is forever blacklisted as our business partner!""It's just one project, you old git! That's nothing!" The furious Chris cursed, "Riverson Group can still live without you! You don't get to act high and mighty with me, you fossil!"Tina went red with mortification. "Enough! You've embarrassed us enough!" She quickly bowed to Neil and the other guests. "I'm so sorry

"That's the Riversons' real heir. No wonder he's the VP of Skycloud at his age. Mr. Lawson's really got an eye for talent.""I've heard of him! He went missing for 20 years. Still, he managed to bring the Riversons' dying overseas project back to life from the moment he was found and taken back in. The profits the company's made are staggering thus far!""Yeah, I spent six months figuring out just how he turned the tides, but I got nothing. That guy truly is a diamond in a sea of stones!"Chris was green with envy after hearing the praises I got. He squeezed his way through to the throng and jabbed a finger at me. Then, he started hysterically screaming at everyone in the vicinity, "No, you got it all wrong! He's just useless trash we kicked out! He nearly lost our client two million last month! He can't be Skycloud's VP!"Someone in the crowd sniggered, and everyone looked at Chris like they expected more drama. Neil sneered and gave Chris a look that said he was a fool."You m
