Chapter 12

The Girl Who Knows

Sliver had been trying to stay away from the girls since she came back upstairs, but something kept pulling her toward them. The injured man’s voice still echoed in her ears, and she kept seeing how the girls’ shoulders drew in whenever Azuka entered a room. There were too many things happening inside this church that she didn’t understand, and the questions had followed her through the afternoon like a draft she couldn’t shut out.

She walked slowly down the hal

Chapter 20The Hidden RecordsMorning light barely reached the storage room, and Sliver stood in the doorway for a long moment before she went in. Her father’s name had been on those papers. She had seen it with her own eyes, but somehow she still wanted to believe there was another explanation. Maybe the records were old. Maybe someone had used his name. Maybe Azuka was wrong. But deep inside, she already knew the truth was not going to be that simple. She had hardly slept, and her eyes burned, and every small sound in the old building made her flinch. She felt like someone walking toward a door she was afraid to open and unable to turn away from. She looked around carefully before stepping inside. The boxes were still there, stacked in crooked towers, and the air smelled of dust and cold paper. She searched through them again, lifting lids, shifting folders, hoping to find something that would explain what she had seen the night before. A thin film of gray dust came away on her

Chapter 19Her Father's SecretSliver spent the morning folding blankets with the girls, the rough wool catching on her fingers, and every few minutes her hands went still while her mind wandered somewhere else. It was supposed to be Azuka she was avoiding thinking about. But something else had started to nag at her, quietly, like a stone in her shoe. The way the rescued girl had looked at her the other day. The warning from the injured man. Felix’s words about her family. She had tried to believe they were separate things, but now she wasn’t so sure. That afternoon she was helping one of the girls put some things away when she noticed a small box sitting on a table near the old storage room. She had never seen it before. She reached for it, but before she could open it, one of Azuka’s men walked in. His face changed when he saw what she was holding.“Where did you get that?”“Here.”He quickly took it from her, and Sliver frowned. “What is inside?”“Nothing you need to worry a

Chapter 18RegretPale morning light lay across the stairs, and Sliver took them slowly, her palm sliding along the cold rail. Her eyes felt heavy and gritty. She had spent most of the night staring at the ceiling, remembering the kiss, the way Azuka had looked at her right before it happened, how close he had been, how neither of them had moved away. But what bothered her most was what came afterward. He had pulled away. And then he had told her to go upstairs, in a voice so even it might have belonged to a stranger. She had lain there in the dark, touching her lips now and then without meaning to, listening to the old building creak and tick around her, and each time the memory came back it felt a little less like something that had happened and a little more like something she had imagined.By morning she was already wondering if she had made a mistake. She reached the bottom of the stairs, expecting to see him, and Azuka was there. But he didn’t look at her. He stood near the

Chapter 17 The First Kiss The chapel doors closed behind Sliver with a heavy, hollow sound, and the warmth of the candlelit hall wrapped around her at once. Her ears were still ringing from the gunfire. The moment she stepped inside, she saw Azuka standing near the long table in the main hall. He had already taken off his coat. There was a small cut near his forehead and blood on the sleeve of his shirt, dark against the pale cloth. Sliver stopped when she saw him, and he looked at her too. Neither of them spoke. She had never seen that look on his face before tonight. Not the cold anger he usually carried whenever something went wrong, but something deeper, something that had shown itself the moment he saw her standing near the broken window. Fear. Real fear. It was the thing she kept returning to, even now, with the whole length of the hall between them. Then his eyes dropped to the small cut on her shoulder. “You’re supposed to be resting.” “I am fine.” “You almost go

Chapter 16The AttackAzuka had barely finished giving the order to move the girls when one of his men came rushing back inside.“Boss.”Azuka looked up at once. “What?”“We have a problem.”“What kind?”The man’s breathing was heavy. “Someone just spotted men coming from the east side.”Azuka’s expression changed. “How many?”“We don’t know yet.”He didn’t waste another second. “Get everyone inside.”His men moved quickly. The girls were confused as they were rushed away from the windows and taken deeper into the safehouse, and the sound of their hurried feet echoed through the rooms. Azuka walked outside. The evening was too quiet, and he stood still for a moment, listening. Then he heard it.A gunshot. It came from the other side of the building.“Down!”Another shot followed, and his men dropped behind cover as bullets struck the walls and sent chips of stone flying.“They found us!” someone shouted.Azuka pulled his gun and moved toward the side of the building.

Chapter 15The BetrayalThe knock came hard, and it rattled the door in its frame.Azuka had just finished dressing. He hadn’t slept much that night, and every time he closed his eyes, Sliver was there, the way she had looked at him, the small smile on her face, the way she had slowly grown comfortable around him. He didn’t like it. She was becoming a distraction, and Azuka didn’t allow distractions.“Boss.”His expression changed at once. “What happened?”“The safehouse.”The words were enough to stop him. “What about it?”“There was someone near the back entrance. One of the guards saw him leaving.”Azuka’s jaw tightened. “Did you catch him?”“No.”He walked out immediately. As he moved through the cold hallway, the thought of Sliver crossed his mind again, and he pushed it away. Whatever was happening at the safehouse needed his attention now. When Azuka arrived, his men were already searching the area, their flashlights cutting thin white lines through the gray morning
