Chapter 4

Author: Snowy
Buddy let out a heart-wrenching yelp, his body curling into a tight ball.

"Matty! What are you doing?" I instinctively reached out to stop him.

Instead, Matty lunged forward and sank his teeth into my wrist. A child's teeth were surprisingly sharp. He clamped down with all his strength, refusing to let go.

Pain shot through my arm, and I gasped. Instinctively, I flung him away.

Matty landed on his butt and immediately let out an ear-piercing wail.

"Grandma! She hit me! She hit me!"

The moment Dolores heard her grandson crying, panic swept across her face.

"Oh, my precious baby!" She scooped Matty into her arms, carefully checked his mouth, then whirled around and glared at me.

"You cursed little witch! If my grandson chipped a tooth, I'll make you pay for it!"

Dr. Warren watched the entire scene with cold amusement, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

"Miss Moreno, not only do you lack even the most basic medical knowledge, but you've also abandoned every shred of professional ethics."

Turning toward the livestream camera, he spoke in a heavy, sorrowful tone, "Everyone watching, because of this assistant's reckless interference, Buddy missed his best chance for a peaceful end.

"His nervous system is now enduring unimaginable agony. If he dies here today, the responsibility rests entirely with her."

The livestream comments exploded.

[Doxx her! Find out who this evil woman is!]

[She even hit a three-year-old? She's a complete psycho!]

[That poor dog. Imagine ending up with someone this desperate for attention.]

I looked toward the camera, unable to defend myself.

Just then, Naomi rushed over and shoved me away. "Paige, just leave! Haven't I suffered enough already?"

Her eyes were bloodshot as she glared at me as if I were her worst enemy. "Are you really not going to stop until you've destroyed my family? I'm begging you... Please stop making things worse."

I froze.

I'd been slapped, bitten, and dragged through the mud by millions of people online.

And after everything, she was telling me to leave.

A crushing sense of helplessness washed over me.

Buddy convulsed violently in my arms. His voice had grown so weak it was almost impossible to hear.

"Don't worry about me anymore... Mom doesn't want me anymore... I'm so cold..."

I lowered my head and looked into his fading eyes. If I let go now, he was going to die.

I bit the inside of my tongue hard enough to taste blood, forcing myself to stay focused. I couldn't back down.

I lifted my head and met everyone's eyes. "Naomi, you can keep kneeling if that's the life you choose. But today, I'm saving this dog."

Then I turned to Dr. Warren. "Dr. Warren, didn't you say he was beyond saving? How about we make a bet?"

He frowned at me as though I were completely insane. "A bet?"

"Give me ten minutes." I pointed toward the restroom nearby. "If I can't save him, I'll pay Mrs. Bishop a million dollars. But if I do save him, you'll admit in front of everyone watching that you're a quack."

The entire set fell silent.

Over my earpiece, Flint had stopped yelling altogether. All I could hear was his ragged breathing.

Dolores' eyes lit up like Christmas lights.

"A million dollars? You mean that?"

She eagerly stepped forward, no longer even bothering to hold onto her grandson.

"You all heard her! Hundreds of thousands of people are watching this livestream as witnesses! If you can't save the dog and don't come up with a million dollars today, I'll call the police and have you arrested!"

I helped Naomi to her feet and gently patted Buddy's head."You don't need to thank me. If anyone deserves your thanks, it's Buddy. He promoted me to a full-time position on the spot and put me in charge of an entirely new pet mediation livestream. The aftermath was immensely satisfying.Jason was charged with illegally concealing marital assets and extortion. Jason lay sprawled on the floor, screaming in frustration."Smash them! Smash all these damn cameras! Shut the livestream down!"He struggled to his feet, grabbed a nearby folding chair, and swung it wildly at the broadcast equipment."You want to keep filming? I'll smash every last one of them!"Several security guards, who had clearly been holding back their anger for a while, rushed forward. Within seconds, they wrestled Jason to the ground and pinned him there."Let me go! This is illegal detention!" he shouted, thrashing helplessly.Realizing the game was up, Dolores dropped onto the floor and immediately resorted to her usual tantrum."Oh, help! They're bullying honest people! We can't survive like this!"The overweight little Matty was so terrified by the chaos that he burst into tears and wet his pants.Ignoring the ridiculous spectacle the family had become, I turned and walked toward Dr. Warren, who had been trying to make himself invisible while quietly edging towar

Beep... Beep...The ringing echoed through the spacious studio. The instant Jason realized his phone had been hijacked, the color drained from his face. He lunged at me, trying to snatch the tablet away."What the hell are you doing? Hang up! Turn it off!"I quickly stepped back and kicked a nearby chair into his path.Jason tripped over it and crashed face-first onto the floor. At that exact moment, someone answered the call. A sweet, coquettish woman's voice poured through the studio's high-quality speakers, reaching every corner of the room."Hello, honey. Why are you only calling me now? Did everything go according to plan? Did that old hag finally agree to sign the promissory note?"Our baby's been kicking again today. The doctor says it's a boy. You'd better hurry up and get rid of her. We're counting on that half a million dollars for the down payment on our new house."Silence blanketed the entire set.Only the woman's syrupy voice continued echoing through the speake

The moment Dolores heard that, she was back on her feet, full of confidence. "That's right! She planted it! Where are the police? Hurry up and arrest this con artist!"The standoff resumed. The diagnostic report, stamped with the hospital's official seal, hung over the room like a mountain.Dr. Warren immediately straightened his back, adjusted his tie, and slipped back into his self-righteous demeanor."Everyone watching, this report is more than enough to prove my diagnosis was completely accurate. As for this so-called peppermint oil, it's nothing more than a pathetic stunt this intern staged to chase internet fame."The livestream comments began wavering again.[The report has the hospital's official seal. Maybe the dog really was sick.][Was this whole thing staged by the intern? People will do anything to go viral these days.]Naomi stared blankly at the report, completely stunned. "That's impossible. I've raised Buddy since he was a puppy. He's never had epilepsy. Jason,

Dr. Warren looked like he'd just swallowed a fly. He adjusted his glasses, avoiding my eyes."Well... Misdiagnoses do happen in medicine.""A misdiagnosis?" I cut him off sharply. "Dr. Warren, you think you can brush all of this aside with one flippant word?"Cradling Buddy in my arms, I walked toward him one step at a time."When you were so confidently insisting he should be euthanized, did it ever occur to you that you might have been wrong? If I hadn't stopped you, Buddy would've already been 'humanely put down' by a so-called expert like you."Dr. Warren backed up until his lower back struck the edge of the table.Humiliated and furious, he jabbed a finger at me. "Don't twist my words. Even if it wasn't a neurological condition, the dog was still injured by someone in their own family. I simply gave the most reasonable medical recommendation.""The most reasonable medical recommendation?" I let out a mocking laugh. "You didn't even perform the most basic physical examinatio

"Stop wasting your time. His pupils are already dilated. No one could bring him back now."Dolores lunged at me, reaching for my hair. "You're still messing with my dog? Pay up already! Somebody grab her! Don't let her get away!"Just as her hand was about to reach me—"Cough..."A faint cough came from the sink.Dolores froze.Every pair of eyes in the room snapped toward the toy poodle that was supposed to be dead.Buddy's chest suddenly rose. Then he coughed up a mouthful of foamy water. His eyes slowly cracked open. His body was still trembling, but the agonizing convulsions that had wracked him moments ago were completely gone. His voice rang clearly inside my head. "It still burns..
