Chapter 4

Author: Redleaves
Rosie was wearing a white couture dress with the Moretti family's silver eagle pin on her chest.

The pin marked her as someone under the Don's personal protection.

I blocked the door to the side parlor.

"This is a family lunch," I said, looking at Rosie. "No outsiders."

Damian put a hand on my shoulder and said quietly, "She's with me. Let her say hello to your family, then we'll leave."

With my back to Grandpa, I warned him through clenched teeth, "You'd better make sure she keeps her mouth shut."

"Don't worry. There won't be any trouble."

He stepped around me and brought Rosie over to my grandfather.

The photographer had already set up the camera in the side parlor, and Damian's reserved spot was right beside mine.

My grandfather glanced at the silver eagle pin on Rosie's chest.

"A guest of the Moretti family?"

Rosie gave a sweet little bow.

"Please, just call me Rosie. It's an honor to meet you."

Just then, the photographer called from nearby, "Don, Donna, could you two step over there first? We'd like to test the framing."

Damian took my hand.

Grandpa smiled at our joined hands.

I had no choice but to follow Damian to our marked spot, my body rigid.

The photographer adjusted the lens.

I faced the camera, but I kept watching Rosie out of the corner of my eye.

She seemed to say something else to Grandpa.

Then she took a piece of paper out of her clutch and handed it to him.

Grandpa took it and glanced down at it.

His breathing turned ragged. Without warning, he slapped Rosie across the face.

He clutched his chest as the color slowly drained from his face.

"Grandpa!"

I ran to his side and shouted at Damian, "Go get a doctor!"

Before Damian could answer, Rosie beat him to the door and slammed it shut.

"Make your grandfather apologize to me, or I'm not opening this door!"

Tears streamed down Rosie's face. "Just because he's an elder, he gets to humiliate me for no reason?"

Grandpa trembled with rage.

He couldn't catch his breath, and then he passed out.

I rushed to the door to drag Rosie out of the way.

The next second, Damian clamped a hand around my wrist.

His grip was so tight it nearly crushed my bones.

I looked back at him.

He avoided my eyes and said quietly, "Isa, apologize to Rosie for your grandfather."

I stared at him in disbelief. "What did you say?"

"Apologize." Conflict flickered in his eyes, but his jaw remained clenched. "Apologize to Rosie."

"Isa, it's her birthday." His voice dropped even lower, now pleading. "Just let her have this one. Apologize first."

I looked at Grandpa. His face was as white as paper.

I bit down so hard I tasted metal.

"Fine. I apologize. Rosie, I'm sorry."

The moment the words left my mouth, I felt something inside me snap.

Rosie finally looked up, satisfied, and waved a hand as if she were being generous.

"Fine, I accept your apology."

Damian finally seemed able to breathe again, and he slowly released my wrist.

I lunged for the door, yanked it open, and ran to get a doctor.

By the time I returned with my father and our family's medical team, Damian and Rosie were gone.

A little later, the doctor removed his mask and shook his head gravely.

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could."

At that moment, the whole world went silent.

I threw myself over Grandpa's body. My throat closed, and I couldn't force out a single word.

My father stood across from me, his hands clenched into fists, his eyes red.

That was when I noticed the crumpled piece of paper next to Grandpa.

Shaking, I picked it up and smoothed it open.

It was a prenatal report.

"Mother's name: Rosie Carter."

"Result: 12 weeks pregnant."

I stared at the next line.

"Father's name: Damian Moretti."

My father took the report from me. One glance, and his face darkened.

I wiped away my last tears.

Grandpa would never get to hear their apologies. And I was done waiting for Damian to come back to me.

I wasn't even going to give him the three days.

From this moment on, there would be no more tears. Only blood.

My enemies' blood.

"Dad, it's time to use our backup plan."

I gripped my father's hand and spoke slowly, emphasizing every word. "It's time we brought the Morettis under the Bellini name."

Grandpa's casket lay in the old chapel on the west side of the estate.Damian walked to the casket and dropped to one knee."Don Bellini, I've come to beg your forgiveness."His voice, thick with grief, echoed through the chapel."I'm the one who brought Rosie to see you, and I'm the one who let her disrespect you."Your death is on me. There's no excuse."The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was our breathing.Damian bowed his head. "I offer you my deepest apology. May you rest in peace."A long time passed before he slowly raised his head."Isa, I've asked for his forgiveness." He searched my face. "Will you... forgive me now?""No. Let's be clear."My voice was perfectly flat. "I only gave you a chance to ask my grandfather for forgiveness."I never said I'd forgive you afterward."Damian flinched as if he'd been struck. He pushed himself to his feet and staggered, struggling to stay upright."You don't believe me," he said, almost to himself. "You don't believe I've really c

A frantic knock sounded at the study door. One of my men entered, his face grim. "Ms. Bellini, Don Moretti forced his way onto the estate. He's demanding to see you."I raised an eyebrow and looked at the group seated across the desk from me.They were the Moretti family elders.Damian had no idea what had happened while he took his sweet time getting back to New York.I'd already taken over the Moretti family's territory. It had happened moments ago, right here in the Bellini estate's study. The seven Moretti elders had just finished swearing their loyalty to me.I took a sip of my martini.I looked up at the men who had just sworn loyalty to me.I knew an oath wasn't the same as loyalty. At least two of the elders in front of me were still loyal to Damian. They'd only bowed to me for now because they had no choice. If I wanted complete control of the Moretti family, the safest way was to destroy his authority in front of everyone."Ms. Bellini, will you see him?"My man's voice cut i

Damian's POV:Damian's mind went blank.By the time Damian came to his senses, Isabella's helicopter was little more than a black dot in the sky.Damian and the unconscious Rosie remained on the beach.A crowd of silent Moretti family members stood around them."What are you all standing around for?"Damian found his voice again. "Get over there and stop Rosie's bleeding!"They looked at him coldly, then turned away.Nobody moved.Damian clenched his jaw so hard he tasted blood.Their silent stares felt like a slap across his face.Authority took 10 years to build. But it could be destroyed in an instant."Get out of my way!"Damian shoved aside the guard next to him and stumbled over to Rosie. Two gruesome wounds gaped open in her knees.Blood gushed from the torn flesh. They looked like two crimson eyes staring right at him.Damian ripped off his shirt, tore it into strips, and bandaged her knees as best he could.Even if she survived, she'd most likely lose her legs."Where's the pi

"Are you an idiot?" Damian's voice was frighteningly low. "You showed Isabella's grandfather a fake prenatal report?"Rosie looked so terrified that even her sobbing stopped for a moment."I was only joking..."Smack!Damian slapped her hard across the face.Rosie's head snapped to the side, and her cheek quickly reddened and swelled. She held her face and stared at Damian in disbelief."You hit me?"Damian's chest heaved. For the first time, he seemed to see Rosie for who she really was.Smack!Another one.The blow knocked Rosie onto the sand, and one of her diamond earrings skittered away."Those two were for Isabella."Damian stared at her. All the indulgence he'd once shown her was gone. "We'll settle the rest later."I stood a few steps away and watched it all in silence. But I felt no satisfaction at all.Because Grandpa was already dead.Rosie had no idea her stupid little joke hadn't just crossed a line with me. It had crossed one with Damian too.Years ago, Damian had been sh

Damian looked past the gun and stared at me."Isabella?" He sounded shocked and confused. "Put the gun down. Just calm down."I slowly looked up and pressed the gun a little harder into her temple. "Shut up."Damian's expression slowly hardened.I took out the prenatal report and shoved it into Rosie's hand."Read it." I tapped her head with the barrel. "Make sure everyone can hear you."Rosie went white and looked at Damian in a panic."Damian..."Her voice trembled with tears. "Help me."Damian stepped forward, anger flaring in his eyes."Isabella, do you have any idea what you're doing?"Fine, I'll admit I wanted to spend her birthday with her. But is all this really necessary?"I was so furious I laughed and turned to face him."You're the one who has no idea what you're doing."Now shut up, or I'll have no problem putting a bullet in you too."Behind me, several of my guards pulled back their suit jackets at once, revealing the guns at their hips.Damian gritted his teeth and glar

Damian's POV:When Isabella ran out, her shoulder slammed hard into the doorframe.Damian instinctively started after her, but Rosie stuck out an arm to stop him.She punched his shoulder."What, you want to chase after her? Are you really that scared of her?"Damian's expression turned icy. "Who's scared of her?""That's more like it." Rosie smoothed his collar. "Don't forget, you're the Don of the Moretti family."Those words seemed to cast a spell on him, keeping him rooted to the spot.It had taken him seven years to become Don.But behind his back, people always said he'd be nothing without Isabella.Isabella'd already caused a scene at the casino. If he went after her now and Rosie told everyone back home, what would people say?Damian watched Isabella disappear around the corner. He sighed and turned to look at Isabella's grandfather. The old man was slumped in the armchair, his breathing growing weaker and weaker.Damian frowned. "Why did he hit you?"Rosie shrugged. "Who knows
