Chapter 3

Author: Redleaves
At two in the morning, the bedroom door opened.

Damian turned on the light and paused when he saw me sitting by the window.

"You're still up?"

Damian crouched in front of me and reached for my hand.

I turned away. His hand hung in the air for a moment before he withdrew it.

"You shouldn't have gone over my head to throw out a family member."

I turned to look at him. His lips were pressed into a thin line.

I scoffed. "A family member? Or the woman who's been sharing your bed all these years?"

He frowned. "Did Rosie tell you that?"

"That's right. Your best friend, Rosie."

I emphasized the words "best friend" as I stared at him. "Damian, you make me sick."

Damian's expression darkened as he slowly stood.

"I only held her. We never crossed the line.

"You openly defied me in front of everyone and threw Rosie out of the Moretti family."

He ground out each word through clenched teeth. "Did you ever think about how I'd feel? About how Rosie would feel?"

My hands balled into fists. "And did you ever think about how I'd feel?"

I picked up my phone and held up the photo Rosie had sent me.

Damian glanced at it and pushed my phone away.

"She shouldn't have rubbed it in your face. I'll warn her."

"Just a warning?"

I suddenly laughed. "You fired a gun in front of everyone to take her side, and now you want me to think about your feelings?"

"You forced me to choose in front of everyone!"

Damian's voice went cold. "Everyone was watching me! I'm the Don of the Moretti family!"

"All I want to know," I said, looking him straight in the eye, "is whether your Donna has the right to ask you to stay away from another woman."

Damian said nothing.

"Three days. I want Rosie out of the Moretti family within three days. It's her or me. You only get to choose one."

Then I turned to look at the wedding photo by the bed.

The day he proposed, all the elders in my family were there.

He unholstered his gun and handed it to my father.

He said my family had never let anyone hurt me, and neither would he.

There was supposed to be nothing but love under this roof. Guns had no place here.

My father smiled, took the gun, and handed it back to him.

"Hold on to this gun. Use it out there to protect my daughter."

But today, he'd used that same gun to teach me to obey.

Damian followed my gaze, and his expression softened.

"I went too far at the casino.

"But you have to promise me you won't go after Rosie behind my back again."

He picked up his jacket. "I don't want our people thinking their Don can't even protect the woman who saved his life."

"Where are you going?"

"I'll sleep at the club tonight. We both need to cool off."

I let out a bitter laugh.

We rarely shared a bed.

Damian said he was a light sleeper and needed quiet, so he preferred to sleep alone in his suite at the club.

I went along with it because I wanted him to sleep well.

Until Rosie told me the truth.

"Is your best friend Rosie there too?"

He stopped buttoning his shirt, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "Stop dragging her into everything."

"Fine." I didn't push. "Just remember, you have three days to make up your mind. I'm having lunch with my family tomorrow at eleven. You're coming with me."

"I've got something at the docks tomorrow."

"You have to come," I said firmly. "Grandpa wants to see you."

Damian pressed his lips together and left without a word.

I watched him go, my heart slowly sinking.

He hadn't said anything, but I'd already found out.

Tomorrow was Rosie's birthday.

Damian had rented an entire private island offshore, and the helicopter was leaving at 10 in the morning.

His business at the docks was just an excuse.

Grandpa had recently had heart surgery and believed he didn't have much time left.

He wanted to take a family portrait while he still could.

The next day, I waited until 10, but Damian never came.

He didn't answer my texts or pick up my calls.

So I had to go back to the Bellini estate alone.

My father stood at the entrance to the main hall, greeting the other relatives.

My grandfather sat alone in the side parlor with a thin blanket over his knees.

When he saw me, he smiled and waved me over.

"Take a look for me. Is my tie crooked?"

He teased, "The new Moretti Don is coming. I can't let him laugh at me."

I forced a smile and played along.

Grandpa looked past me. "Where's Damian?"

"He had something to take care of at the docks." My voice was tight. "He'll be here soon."

I texted Damian.

"We won't talk about Rosie today or about last night.

"Just sit with Grandpa for a while and take a picture. After that, I won't stop you from going wherever you want."

This time, Damian answered right away, "Okay. I'll be there in 20 minutes."

20 minutes later, Damian arrived, just as he'd promised.

But Rosie was right behind him.

Grandpa's casket lay in the old chapel on the west side of the estate.Damian walked to the casket and dropped to one knee."Don Bellini, I've come to beg your forgiveness."His voice, thick with grief, echoed through the chapel."I'm the one who brought Rosie to see you, and I'm the one who let her disrespect you."Your death is on me. There's no excuse."The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was our breathing.Damian bowed his head. "I offer you my deepest apology. May you rest in peace."A long time passed before he slowly raised his head."Isa, I've asked for his forgiveness." He searched my face. "Will you... forgive me now?""No. Let's be clear."My voice was perfectly flat. "I only gave you a chance to ask my grandfather for forgiveness."I never said I'd forgive you afterward."Damian flinched as if he'd been struck. He pushed himself to his feet and staggered, struggling to stay upright."You don't believe me," he said, almost to himself. "You don't believe I've really c

A frantic knock sounded at the study door. One of my men entered, his face grim. "Ms. Bellini, Don Moretti forced his way onto the estate. He's demanding to see you."I raised an eyebrow and looked at the group seated across the desk from me.They were the Moretti family elders.Damian had no idea what had happened while he took his sweet time getting back to New York.I'd already taken over the Moretti family's territory. It had happened moments ago, right here in the Bellini estate's study. The seven Moretti elders had just finished swearing their loyalty to me.I took a sip of my martini.I looked up at the men who had just sworn loyalty to me.I knew an oath wasn't the same as loyalty. At least two of the elders in front of me were still loyal to Damian. They'd only bowed to me for now because they had no choice. If I wanted complete control of the Moretti family, the safest way was to destroy his authority in front of everyone."Ms. Bellini, will you see him?"My man's voice cut i

Damian's POV:Damian's mind went blank.By the time Damian came to his senses, Isabella's helicopter was little more than a black dot in the sky.Damian and the unconscious Rosie remained on the beach.A crowd of silent Moretti family members stood around them."What are you all standing around for?"Damian found his voice again. "Get over there and stop Rosie's bleeding!"They looked at him coldly, then turned away.Nobody moved.Damian clenched his jaw so hard he tasted blood.Their silent stares felt like a slap across his face.Authority took 10 years to build. But it could be destroyed in an instant."Get out of my way!"Damian shoved aside the guard next to him and stumbled over to Rosie. Two gruesome wounds gaped open in her knees.Blood gushed from the torn flesh. They looked like two crimson eyes staring right at him.Damian ripped off his shirt, tore it into strips, and bandaged her knees as best he could.Even if she survived, she'd most likely lose her legs."Where's the pi

"Are you an idiot?" Damian's voice was frighteningly low. "You showed Isabella's grandfather a fake prenatal report?"Rosie looked so terrified that even her sobbing stopped for a moment."I was only joking..."Smack!Damian slapped her hard across the face.Rosie's head snapped to the side, and her cheek quickly reddened and swelled. She held her face and stared at Damian in disbelief."You hit me?"Damian's chest heaved. For the first time, he seemed to see Rosie for who she really was.Smack!Another one.The blow knocked Rosie onto the sand, and one of her diamond earrings skittered away."Those two were for Isabella."Damian stared at her. All the indulgence he'd once shown her was gone. "We'll settle the rest later."I stood a few steps away and watched it all in silence. But I felt no satisfaction at all.Because Grandpa was already dead.Rosie had no idea her stupid little joke hadn't just crossed a line with me. It had crossed one with Damian too.Years ago, Damian had been sh

Damian looked past the gun and stared at me."Isabella?" He sounded shocked and confused. "Put the gun down. Just calm down."I slowly looked up and pressed the gun a little harder into her temple. "Shut up."Damian's expression slowly hardened.I took out the prenatal report and shoved it into Rosie's hand."Read it." I tapped her head with the barrel. "Make sure everyone can hear you."Rosie went white and looked at Damian in a panic."Damian..."Her voice trembled with tears. "Help me."Damian stepped forward, anger flaring in his eyes."Isabella, do you have any idea what you're doing?"Fine, I'll admit I wanted to spend her birthday with her. But is all this really necessary?"I was so furious I laughed and turned to face him."You're the one who has no idea what you're doing."Now shut up, or I'll have no problem putting a bullet in you too."Behind me, several of my guards pulled back their suit jackets at once, revealing the guns at their hips.Damian gritted his teeth and glar

Damian's POV:When Isabella ran out, her shoulder slammed hard into the doorframe.Damian instinctively started after her, but Rosie stuck out an arm to stop him.She punched his shoulder."What, you want to chase after her? Are you really that scared of her?"Damian's expression turned icy. "Who's scared of her?""That's more like it." Rosie smoothed his collar. "Don't forget, you're the Don of the Moretti family."Those words seemed to cast a spell on him, keeping him rooted to the spot.It had taken him seven years to become Don.But behind his back, people always said he'd be nothing without Isabella.Isabella'd already caused a scene at the casino. If he went after her now and Rosie told everyone back home, what would people say?Damian watched Isabella disappear around the corner. He sighed and turned to look at Isabella's grandfather. The old man was slumped in the armchair, his breathing growing weaker and weaker.Damian frowned. "Why did he hit you?"Rosie shrugged. "Who knows
