The leather interior of the SUV felt small, hot, and intensely as the vehicle tore through the rain-slicked streets. Vittoria’s fingers remained tangled in the collar of Cassian’s shirt, her breath coming in short, ragged hitches against his mouth.

The kiss had changed something fundamental between them. It was no longer just a transaction of survival or a forced compliance. Her confession hung in the air, a sweet smoke that neither of them could escape.

Cassian broke the kiss slowly, his lips lingering against hers for a fraction of a second before he pulled back just enough to look down into her eyes. His dark pupils were completely dilated, his breathing heavy as his large hands held her waist with an unyielding, territorial grip.

"Say it again," Cassian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated directly against her chest.

Vittoria swallowed hard, her face flushing a deep crimson as she realized how completely she had exposed her vulnerabilities. "I already said it, Cassian. I am not repeating myself just to feed your ego."

"It has nothing to do with my ego, sweet girl," he murmured, his thumb moving up to trace her lower lip, pressing down gently until she gasped. "I want to hear those words settle into your mind. You belong to me. You chose it."

"I chose not to want you dead," she corrected, though the lie felt weak even to her own ears. "There is a difference."

From the front seat, Enzo cleared his throat softly, his eyes remaining fixed on the rear-view mirror as the car climbed the steep, winding cliffside road toward the estate. "We are crossing the outer perimeter now, boss. The gates are secure. The sedan didn't attempt to follow us past the lower bridge."

"Have the security teams pull the traffic camera feeds from the avenue," Cassian ordered, his tone instantly shifting into that cold, businesslike authority that always made Vittoria remember exactly who he was to the rest of the city. "Find out who registered that license plate. If it is a dummy corporation, track the origin of the chassis."

"Already on it, sir," Enzo replied smoothly as the SUV glided to a halt in front of the grand stone entrance of the Marchetti manor.

Cassian didn't wait for Enzo to open the door. He shifted Vittoria easily in his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as he stepped out into the cool evening air. The rain had slowed to a miserable drizzle, the damp wind catching the hem of Vittoria’s skirt as Cassian carried her up the wide marble steps.

"Cassian, put me down," she whispered, her hands tightening on his shoulders as they walked past two bowing guards at the entrance. "The servants are watching."

"Let them watch," Cassian growled, his stride long and unbroken as he crossed the grand foyer. "They need to know exactly how things are in this house."

Maria was waiting near the base of the grand staircase, her hands folded over her white apron. Her eyes darted from Vittoria's flushed face to the cardboard box of books that Enzo was carrying in behind them. "Good evening, Mr. Marchetti. Is everything alright? We heard there was a delay near the square."

"Everything is fine, Maria," Cassian said, not slowing down as he began to ascend the stairs. "Have a light dinner brought up to the master suite in an hour. And make sure the tea is chamomile."

"Right away, sir," Maria replied, her voice filled with a quiet, knowing relief as she hurried off toward the kitchens.

Cassian carried Vittoria straight into the master bedroom, using his boot to click the heavy mahogany door shut behind them. He set her down gently on the edge of the massive canopy bed, but he didn't pull away. He remained standing between her parted knees, his towering frame completely blocking out the rest of the room.

Vittoria looked up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs as she began to unbutton her wool coat. "You are being completely ridiculous. I can walk on my own feet, Cassian."

"I didn't want your feet touching the cold ground until I knew you were calm," he said, reaching down to assist her with the coat, his fingers brushing against her collarbone, sending a sudden, electric shiver straight down her spine. He tossed the heavy coat onto a nearby armchair and knelt down before her, his large hands resting flat on her thighs. "Your hands are still shaking, Vittoria."

"Because you terrified me," she whispered, her green eyes searching his dark, unreadable face. "When I saw those men get out of the car, all I could think about was the stories my mother told me. The ambushes. The blood on the pavement. I thought I was going to watch you die right in front of me."

Cassian’s expression softened, a rare, genuine warmth breaking through his icy exterior. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against hers, his breath warm against her skin. "I have been surviving in this city since I was a boy, sweet girl. It takes much more than two low-level soldiers in a stolen sedan to put me in the ground."

"But it only takes one bullet," she argued, her voice cracking with a raw emotion she couldn't hide. She reached out, her fingers tracing the sharp, rigid line of his jaw. "Don't do that again. Don't lock me away while you stand out there like a target."

"It is my job to be the target, Vittoria," he murmured, his hands sliding up her thighs, bunching the fabric of her skirt until his fingers met the bare skin of her hips. "And it is your job to stay safe behind the walls I build for you."

"I hate your walls," she whispered, though her body was already betraying her, leaning closer into his heat.

"You don't hate this one," Cassian growled softly, his mouth finding her jawline, biting gently at the sensitive skin just below her ear.

Vittoria gasped, her head falling back as a wave of intense, liquid desire pooled in her lower stomach. She gripped his shoulders, her nails digging into the expensive fabric of his shirt as his hands gripped her hips tighter, lifting her slightly so she was flush against his chest. The terror of the afternoon melted away, replaced by a fierce, consuming need to feel alive, to feel his weight, and to forget the shadows that were circling their lives.

The study doors had not closed completely. Vittoria stood in the narrow gap, one hand still on the frame. She pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped inside.Cassian was behind the desk. The cream-colored page lay face down in front of him. He looked up the moment she entered and did not seem surprised. Enzo had already gone. The two of them were alone in the quiet room.Vittoria stopped just inside the threshold. Her voice came out steadier than she expected.“What was that letter?”Cassian did not answer immediately. He reached for the page, turned it face up for a second as if confirming the words were still there, then looked at her again. A cold, predatory smile spread across his face. It did not reach his eyes.“An ultimatum,” he said. “The rogue captains want you delivered to a neutral facility for a bloodline vote. They gave me forty-eight hours. After that they plan to call refusal an act of treason.”She felt the floor shift under the ordinary statement of fact.

The afternoon had been quiet enough to feel almost ordinary. In the study the windows stood open to the cool coastal air. Cassian sat behind the heavy desk reviewing a set of revised port manifests when the intercom on the side table crackled once.Enzo’s voice came through, flat and controlled. “Boss, there is a black town car at the main gates. No prior clearance. The driver is requesting delivery of a formal envelope addressed to you by name.”Cassian set the manifest aside. “Verify the vehicle and the driver. If the package is clean, bring it in.”“Already in process.”Three minutes later the study doors opened. Enzo entered carrying a single cream-colored envelope. The dark wax seal on the back was unbroken. His expression was tighter than usual.“They used the old protocol,” Enzo said. “No electronic trail. Hand-delivered under council courier markings. The driver is already off the property.”Cassian held out his hand. Enzo placed the envelope in it and remained standing on the

The study balcony sat high enough to give a clear view of the courtyard garden without being obvious from below. Cassian stood with one hand on the stone railing, the other holding a half-finished espresso that had gone lukewarm.Below him Vittoria sat on a low bench near the white roses, a sketchbook open on her lap. She worked with quiet concentration, pencil moving in short, precise lines as she captured the architectural details of the old stone archway that framed the far end of the garden. He had been watching for nearly twenty minutes. The morning air was cool and clear. The security detail at the outer gate remained visible but unobtrusive. Everything looked ordinary. That was the problem. Ordinary left room for small openings.A plain white courier van appeared at the main gates and stopped at the checkpoint. The driver stepped out with a tablet and a medium-sized cardboard box.One of the perimeter guards checked the credentials, then waved him through to the inner courtyard

The estate library was quiet in the mid-morning light. Vittoria sat at the mahogany desk with her laptop open and the camera angled just high enough to keep the background of bookshelves professional. She had already checked the lighting twice. The dark circles under her eyes were harder to hide. No amount of careful framing erased the tiredness that had settled into her face over the past week. The university portal chimed. Dr. Melissa Aris appeared on screen in her usual office, a wall of reference books behind her and a ceramic mug within reach. She smiled the moment the connection stabilized.“Vittoria. Right on time. How are you holding up?”“I’m fine, Dr. Aris. Ready to go over the latest section.”The professor opened a document on her end and glanced down at it. “Good. I read through the revised pages on the Florentine trade records last night. The structure is stronger. Your analysis of the 1487 tariff adjustments is particularly clear. But I want to talk about the transition

The mansion held the deep quiet that only came after midnight. No footsteps in the corridors. Even the ocean against the cliffs sounded muted, as if the dark itself had thickened the air.Vittoria woke from a restless dream with her heart still beating too fast. The sheets on her side of the bed were cool. She turned her head and found the space beside her empty.Cassian stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dark shape against the glass. He had not turned on any lights. The only illumination came from the distant scatter of city lights far below the cliffs, faint and cold. His arms were crossed, shoulders set in the posture he used when his mind was turning over something he did not plan to share.Vittoria pushed the covers back and stood. The velvet carpet was soft under her bare feet. She crossed the room without speaking until she was a few steps behind him.“You’re still awake,” she said.“I didn’t feel like sleeping.”She moved closer and stopped beside him, looking out at the

The container terminal sat under a low gray sky, the air thick with the smell of diesel and wet concrete. Cranes moved slowly along the waterfront, their cables creaking as they lifted another stack of steel boxes from a cargo ship. Enzo stood inside the glass-walled operations office overlooking the main yard, a tablet in one hand and a printed manifest in the other. The lead shipping captain, a broad man named Ruiz who had worked the docks for twenty years, leaned over the same table. He pointed at a column of numbers with a thick finger.“See these three lines?” Ruiz said. “High-value electronics, marked for the northern distribution hub. According to the original contracts they should have cleared through Bay 7 and gone straight up the coastal route. Instead the digital tags show them peeling off toward the western district two nights ago.”Enzo scrolled through the corresponding digital log. The reroute was clean. No alarm flags. No request for authorization. Just a quiet change
