“You’re not worried Arabella will find out?”

“She won’t,” Lorenzo paused before he spoke. “Arabella is a smart woman, but she loves me too much. Love makes you blind. She won't ever question if my words are a lie.”

Laughter echoed from the room. The glass of scotch in my hand slipped, the thick rug muffling the sound of it shattering.

I stumbled back, my legs giving out as if the bones had been ripped from them.

Four years of marriage.

I thought I’d found a protector. A man who would die for me.

It was all a lie.

I touched my small, rounding belly, my mind racing.

Lorenzo’s kiss last month, thrilled we were finally having a child.

Isabella’s strange smile outside the clinic.

His frequent “family meetings.”

The flicker of something in his eyes yesterday as he touched my stomach.

The child I was carrying… it wasn’t even mine.

I collapsed onto the bed. I didn’t have the strength to turn on a light. A deep, uncontrollable cold shook my body. My stomach churned and my head pounded. Tears slid down my face, but I didn’t have the energy to wipe them away.

Footsteps in the hall.

Lorenzo was back.

I scrambled off the bed, plunging the room into darkness, and huddled in the shadows by the fireplace.

“Arabella?”

The door opened. His voice was full of concern. “Why are the lights off?”

Such a good actor.

“Just tired,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

He walked over quickly and knelt beside me. “Are you feeling sick? Should I call the doctor?”

His hand stroked my hair, a touch so gentle it made me want to scream.

“I’m fine.”

“You need to take care of yourself,” he murmured, his voice low and soft. “For our child. For the Falcone heir.”

I closed my eyes, remembering that night four years ago.

My fiancé and Isabella, tangled together in the lounge.

All of Chicago’s underworld laughing at me.

Just when I thought my life was over, Lorenzo appeared.

He proposed to me in public, backing me with the Falcone name.

“I’ll protect you,” he’d said. “No one will ever hurt you again.”

And I believed him.

I was a fool to believe him.

I wasn’t just his wife. I was his asset.

That three-million-dollar Monet? A forgery I spotted.

The Renaissance antiques? I helped him dodge an FBI sting.

The “special cargo” at the docks? My eye for detail saved him from a rival’s ambush.

And now I knew. All that warmth was just part of the act.

“Arabella?” Lorenzo sensed my silence. “What are you thinking about?”

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

The firelight danced across his face. The face I once loved, now a stranger’s mask.

“Nothing,” I forced a smile. “Just… the past.”

“The past?”

“The night you proposed to me.”

His eyes softened instantly. “Best decision I ever made.”

Best decision, was it? Because you married a fool from a weak family who trusts you completely?

He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “I love you, Arabella. Always.”

Always…

If I hadn’t found out the truth, I might have lived in this dream forever.

You want to act? Fine. Two can play at that game.

I blinked slowly, a pale smile on my lips.

“I’m alright, Lorenzo. Just a little tired.”

My voice was soft, sleepy. Flawless.

He let out a breath, relieved. He kissed my forehead again. “Good girl. Get some rest.”

Fine. I'll play your good little wife for three more days.

On the third day, I’ll be the one to bring down the curtain.

I thought Isabella would just disappear. I was wrong. She wasn't done yet.One day, Marco handed me a tablet."You need to see this," he said, his voice cold. "The absolute shamelessness of it."I looked down. An anonymous post was making the rounds on the dark web forums and private channels our world lived on. The title was simple: She Stole My Life.It was a long, sob story about her supposed "tragic life."She claimed I bullied her since we were kids, using my status as the adopted one to gain sympathy and steal everything that was hers. She claimed I was a manipulative schemer, pretending to be sweet while forcing her to give up everything. She said it was all my fault—that she was forced to marry into the Moretti family after I called the whole thing off.She claimed I was now using the Valenti family's power to go on a rampage, destroying her life, taking her child, and ruining her name.Every word was a tear-soaked accusation, painting her as the poor, innocent victim. In just

Of course the baby Isabella brought wasn't Matteo's.God knows where she found some random kid to try and pass him off as an heir. After the paternity test results came in, Isabella were thrown out by the Moretti family.Once so high and mighty, she now had nothing. She stumbled back to the Rossi estate, eyes red, on the verge of a total breakdown. But the estate was empty. She frantically pulled out her phone and called her adoptive mother. This time, Elena answered."Mom! Mom, it's me! Where are you? I need your help!"There was a long silence on the other end."Isabella," Elena's voice was cold enough to freeze blood. "You have the nerve to call here?""Mom, I—""Shut up!" Elena screamed. "This is all your fault! You stupid, reckless girl!"Isabella was stunned. Her mother had never said a harsh word to her in her entire life."We're living in some rundown motel!" Elena's voice was laced with venom. "Our bank accounts are frozen, the businesses are gone, and no lawyer will even take

Isabella's lips trembled, a denial forming that she couldn't voice. But the Don was no fool. Between her panic and my question, the pieces clicked into place. His voice was ice as he turned to his son. "Matteo... what is the real story with this child?"Matteo's confused gaze shot to Isabella."Of course I gave birth to him!" Isabella shrieked, her voice cracking. "Father, how could you doubt me?" She clutched the baby to her chest as if I were about to tear him from her arms. She was over-acting. It only made her look guiltier. The Don’s eyes swept over her stomach—too flat for a new mother—and his gaze turned to stone. "We're getting a paternity test," he said slowly. "Tomorrow."Isabella swayed on her feet, her face a mask of terror.Just then, Matteo approached. The man who dumped me for my sister. His face was a mess of emotions, his brow tight. He was finally grasping the gravity of the situation. He looked at me, his voice low. "Bella... I had no idea."I let out a cold laugh.H

I took one step, and a hand grabbed my wrist, hard."What do you think you're doing!""You little bitch!" Elena's nails dug into my skin, her eyes blazing. "Haven't you done enough damage?"The other guests turned to look at us.The whispers grew louder."You won't be happy until you've destroyed Isabella's future!" Elena hissed through gritted teeth. "We raised you for twenty years, and this is how you repay us?"I looked at her, my eyes cold as ice."Let go.""I won't!" she squeezed harder. "If you dare make a scene today, I'll—"CRACK!A loud slap cut her off.Vincent rushed over, his face beet red."Enough!" he roared, pointing at me. "We should have never taken you from that orphanage!"The entire cathedral fell silent.Orphanage. Taken you.The words hit me like a bolt of lightning. So that was it. I wasn't their real daughter. No wonder they always favored Isabella. No wonder they never saw my worth, no matter how hard I worked. No wonder they could use me like a tool without a

After I recovered, the Commission approved my annulment.I didn't feel much of anything. It was like waking up from a long, ridiculous nightmare. I was finally free."Book a flight to New York," I told Marco. "I'm starting over.""Are you sure?" Marco asked, worried. "Leaving Chicago means—""It means I can finally be myself."Three days later, I was in New York. The Sotheby's showroom buzzed with quiet money and ambition. I stood before an 18th-century oil painting, a whisper of black silk against my skin."The dating on this Portrait of a Lady is wrong," I told the curator next to me. "Based on the oxidation of the paint and the canvas texture, it's from the early 19th century."The curator stared, then examined the painting closely."My God, you're right!"People nearby started to notice me.Arabella Rossi, independent art restorer.No. From now on, just Arabella."Did you find any other issues?" a collector asked.I smiled and moved to the next painting. This was the life I wante
