Chapter 4

Autor: Chelsea
The port stronghold that had once belonged to me was now under someone else's control. Mirena was sitting behind the desk that I had used for five years. The Verona map on the wall remained unchanged, but the men stationed beside it had been replaced with hers.

Seeing me enter, she immediately stood up. "Donna, Don Adrian said that this place belongs to me from now on. I've sent your things back to the manor."

I walked in and took away the last personal ledger that was mine. "Got it."

She seemed surprised. "You're really not angry?"

"Why should I?"

Mirena looked at me for a few seconds and replied with a sneer, "Don Adrian is right. You learned your place the moment he neglected you for a bit. You care so much about him that you can't bear to leave."

I had no intention of arguing with her. Since she thought I could not leave, she could continue with that thought.

Just as I was about to leave, footsteps were heard outside the corridor. Adrian came over with several capos. Seeing me standing at the door, his expression immediately turned cold. "Why are you still here?"

Mirena explained, "Don Adrian, Donna came back to get something."

She paused and added, as if casually, "But she seemed a little unhappy when she saw me sitting here."

Adrian scoffed. "Here we go again."

I looked at him with an impassive expression. "I'm not."

"You're not?" He stepped right in front of me. "You're upset that she got your office. You're upset that she got the port. Lavinia, I thought you'd finally come to your senses these past few days."

I could not be bothered to explain. "I just came to get my things."

He did not believe me. "If you're so attached to this place, there's no need for you to handle headquarters matters anymore. Stay at the manor starting tomorrow."

The old steward overseeing the handover immediately panicked. "Don Adrian, but the Donna actually..."

Adrian cut him off immediately, "Enough. I don't want to hear her excuses."

The old steward opened his mouth to speak but ultimately said nothing.

I smirked secretly. He would have realized I had not come to fight over the port, but to complete the final handover if he had been willing to listen to just half a sentence more.

Seeing my silence, Adrian softened his tone. "There's a celebration party at the estate tonight. Mirena is officially taking over Verona Port, and you need to be there."

"And if I don't go?"

A look of displeasure crossed his face again. "Don't start this again."

Then, he spoke as if he were granting me one final act of mercy. "Don't cause a scene tonight, and keep acting the way you have lately. I won't touch your position as Donna."

I looked at him nonchalantly. "Sure."

At 10:00 pm that night, the manor was still brightly lit.

Just as I closed the last box, a message from my uncle, Alaric Antonelli, popped up right on cue.

[Your ride's here.]

I picked up my suitcase and had just reached the doorway when I saw Adrian coming up the stairs. He fixed his gaze on the suitcase. "Where are you going?"

"North Shore."

"For how long?"

I did not answer, but he chuckled. "A change of scenery would do you good. When you get back, I'll hand the West District winery over to you."

As he spoke, he reached out to touch my shoulder.

I sidestepped to avoid him. Adrian frowned slightly. Just as he was about to say something, someone called from downstairs. "Don Adrian! Mirena is looking for you."

He responded impatiently, glancing at me one last time before leaving. "Come back after a few days. Don't keep me waiting too long."

With that, he turned and walked downstairs without looking back.

Dragging my suitcase, I left the manor via a different staircase.

The butler, Thomas Russo, chased after me. "Donna!"

I stopped, removed the family ring from my finger, and placed it in his palm. "Don't call me that anymore."

He froze, standing rooted to the spot as he watched me get into the car.

The car door closed. The lights of the manor receded into the distance, while the party upstairs continued.

Mirena held her wine glass and said with a smile, "Don Adrian, I told you that she'll learn her place once you neglect her; she can't bear to leave you!"

Adrian leaned back against the couch, his tone equally certain. "She can't leave me."

…

The next morning, he pushed open the door to the master bedroom, only to find the wardrobe half-empty. The ledgers belonging to me were gone from the study. Nothing remained on the nightstand but a wedding ring.

Adrian realized something, and the expression on his face slowly changed. "Lavinia?"

There was no response.

Thomas hurried up to him. "Don Adrian, a lawyer just delivered this."

Adrian tore open the document envelope; the moment he saw the text inside, he froze. It was a divorce agreement. In the signature section, two names were signed—mine and his. He stared at that signature, the color draining from his face.

  • The Don's Neglect   Chapter 10

All the assets under Adrian's name had been frozen to cover the losses Mirena caused. Verona Port also had a new manager. However, the partners who had left did not return. Some things, once lost, could never truly be restored just by saying it would be restored.A month later, I met Adrian again in North Shore. He stood alone outside the new port, waiting from afternoon until dark. When I came out of my meeting, he had turned pale from the sea wind. "Lavinia."I stopped. "What else do you need?"Adrian looked at the busy port behind me.The cranes were moving back and forth, and a cargo ship was slowly entering the port in the distance."I only found out today that this line was originally intended for the Veta family by the San Luca family."I did not deny it.He forced a smile. "They would rather give it to you now.""Yeah.""Because you wouldn't change a contract on a whim or use a business partner as leverage to teach your wife a lesson."Adrian went pale, and I remain

The hopeful look on Adrian's face slowly faded. "This... might be a misunderstanding."I smiled. "What misunderstanding?""Mirena doesn't need to steal the Veta family's goods.""Then investigate it." I handed the phone over. "Find out the truth. Wouldn't that clear her name?"Adrian's hand hung at his side, hesitating to take it. "Lavinia, although she has made many mistakes, she has been with me for several years. If I hand her over to the family council, she will...""What? " I stared at him. "Be expelled from the Veta family? Pay back the losses, or would she never be allowed near the ports again?"Adrian's teeth clenched. "She's still young."I laughed out loud.Every time Mirena made a mistake, he always gave the same excuses—she was young, it was the first time she managed a port, she had no experience, or she meant no harm. When I took over the shipping routes my mother left behind at 18, no one told me I was allowed to make mistakes. I failed once, and the loss was th

"Your port?""Yeah." I handed the document to the deputy behind me. "The new port on the East Coast. Starting next month, all three international shipping routes will pass through here."Adrian's lips twitched twice. "So you planned this all along? Leaving me, returning to North Shore, and competing with the Veta family for business… You planned it all?"I burst out laughing. "Adrian, do you still think everything revolves around you? "His pupils contracted while I continued, "Before I left the Veta family, I didn't steal any of your lines. Now the people from North Shore negotiate these collaborations themselves. As for why others would rather cooperate with us, you should ask Mirena yourself."Adrian's expression suddenly darkened, not wanting to hear that name. "She's no longer important."He suddenly took out a box from his pocket, opened it, and inside was a new ring. "You didn't want the old one anymore, so I ordered a new one for you."I did not take it.Adrian's hand f

When he gave the order, the entire headquarters fell into a state of silence.Mirena stood before him in disbelief. "You want to kick me out of Verona Port?"Adrian lowered his head as he flipped through the documents. "Just temporarily.""Why?" she questioned forcefully. "Just because Lavinia left?""Haven't there been enough problems these days?" Adrian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Which of these recent problems wasn't caused by you?"Her tears fell instantly. "You've never spoken to me like this before.""Lavinia was here before."With one sentence, the entire room fell silent.Mirena turned pale, and Adrian himself was stunned.Whenever she got into trouble in the past, someone would always clean it up for her. He never even knew how serious those messes were because I would handle them thoroughly every time. That night, he returned to the manor alone. The master bedroom was still empty, and all my clothes had been taken away. There was no perfume or jewelry on the dr

The members of the San Luca family were blocking the entrance to the warehouse, with more than a dozen people on each side holding guns.Mirena stood in the crowd, her face pale. "Don Adrian!"Seeing Adrian, she rushed over immediately, as if she had seen her savior. "They're being unreasonable!"The capo of the San Luca family sneered, "Unreasonable?"He threw a document onto the ground. "This is the unloading sequence Lavinia set! Pier 8 was supposed to keep Berth 3 open for us until 2:00 am, but your men let another ship dock at the last minute.”Mirena hurriedly explained. "That batch of goods has a higher profit margin!""So you think you can just detain our ship?"The other party abruptly drew his gun, and Adrian's expression darkened. "Put the gun down."However, the man did not show any courtesy. "When the Donna was here, this kind of thing never happened. Now you've brought in a woman who doesn't even understand the port rules. Is the Veta family trying to humiliate us

Adrian suddenly looked up. "It's fake."Thomas froze. "Don Adrian?""I said this is fake!" Adrian slammed the document onto the table, his face looking terrifyingly grim. "When did I sign anything like this?" Thomas' lips moved. "Last week. Mrs. Veta... Ms. Alfonsi sent several port handover documents to the headquarters. You were in a hurry to deal with Ms. Ricci's problem."Adrian's expression suddenly froze. As if he had finally remembered something, he grabbed the documents and quickly flipped to the last page. The signature was all too familiar. The sharp ending stroke, slightly tilted to the right, was definitely his handwriting.Adrian's breathing suddenly became heavy. "Call the lawyer."Half an hour later, the lawyer, Jacob Riccardo, was brought into the manor.Adrian threw the documents in front of him. "Revoke it."Jacob glanced down and answered carefully, "Don Adrian, the agreement has already been filed.""Then cancel the filing!""Ms. Alfonsi has signed it, an
