"Have you thought this through?"

Standing outside the airport, my inner thighs still sore and my legs trembling, I gripped the phone.

"I have."

My father's voice came over the line. "You should've done this long ago. Matteo Romano would never let anyone hurt you."

Five years ago, when my father sent me to Luca at 19, he'd said the same thing.

"He's your uncle, and he's the brother I'd trust with my life. With him looking after you in Sicily, I don't have to worry."

My father still had no idea that the man I'd been hiding for five years, the one I never dared mention at home, was Luca, the man I'd called uncle all along.

After I hung up, I went back to headquarters and handed the Elder in charge of internal affairs my signed resignation as chief assistant.

The Elder flipped to the last page, then looked up at me for a long time.

"Ms. Bianchi, a resignation needs the Don's personal approval. Are you sure you want to leave?"

"I'm sure."

"Does the Don know?"

"This is my resignation. He doesn't get to make this decision for me."

The Elder stamped it, then had me press my thumbprint beside it in blood.

When I left the Elders' hall, I had three missed calls from Luca.

I still had to go back to the hillside estate to pack my things, so I called him back.

It rang for a long time before someone picked up. It was Sofia Russo.

"Looking for Luca?"

Her voice was soft and lazy, and she sounded out of breath.

"He's in the shower. If you need something, you can tell me."

I could hear running water and the rustle of fabric.

My grip on the stair rail tightened, and I couldn't stop picturing them.

Have they already slept together in the big bed in the master bedroom?

Does looking at the rose on Sofia's thigh excite him more than looking at me?

My chest hurt, but my voice stayed steady.

"No, thanks."

Less than five minutes after I hung up, Luca called back.

"Why didn't you pick up just now?"

His voice was hoarse, and he opened with an accusation.

"I was handing over my work."

"What handoff?"

"Loose ends from my assistant job."

Luca didn't press. His voice went back to its usual chill.

"Don't stay at the hillside estate tonight. Sofia just got back, and she isn't feeling well. She needs the master bedroom."

After a moment, he added, "It wouldn't be appropriate for you to stay there."

For five years, I'd lived in the room next to the master bedroom. Whenever Luca wanted me, no matter how late, I had to go to him.

Now that Sofia was back, it wasn't even appropriate for me to set foot on the estate.

"My things are still there."

"Clear them out this afternoon. The condo by the docks is empty. Move in there for now."

I heard someone call Luca's name in a sugary voice.

His breathing caught for a second, then he lowered his voice to soothe her. "Coming."

When he spoke to me again, every trace of that tenderness was gone.

"Aria, don't throw a tantrum right now.

"I promised your father I'd look after you. You'll always have a place to live and enough money."

So in his eyes, giving me an apartment and some money counted as looking after me.

He'd refused to make our relationship public because my father was his adoptive brother, and the mafia wouldn't tolerate the scandal of an uncle and his niece.

When he needed me gone, I was his brother's daughter again, someone he'd been entrusted to protect. Then he could play the dutiful Don and uncle.

"Did you hear me?"

"That won't be necessary, Don Ferraro."

Luca went quiet for a few seconds.

"What did you call me?"

"I'm 24. I can take care of myself."

A year later, Matteo was there with me for my last skin graft. The dark red rose on my inner thigh was gone for good, and a blue butterfly with its wings spread now covered the old scar. When the tattoo artist put down the needle, Matteo took my hand."Did it hurt?""Much less than getting the old one removed."He bent and kissed my forehead. "Nothing's going to hurt anymore."Luca survived the attack too.The beam had crushed both his legs, so the doctors had to amputate them below the knee. The damage to his spine meant he would never stand again. The Council of Elders seized the chance to strip him of his position as Don and sent him to a monastery on the coast near Naples.Every month, the hospital sent the bills. My father asked if I wanted to stop paying for his treatment. I shook my head.Staying alive was painful enough for Luca.Three years later, in early summer, Matteo and I took our twins, just over three months old, to Piazza Navona. Our daughter slept in the stroller, and

Two men covered my mouth and nose and dragged me into the back seat. When I woke up again, my hands were tied to a pillar in an abandoned repair yard.Jet fuel was running past my feet, and Sofia stood a few steps away, leaning on a cane. Her wounded foot dragged along the ground, and her face was lit with the thrill of revenge."Matteo wrecked my casino, and Luca crippled my foot."Today I'm going to make them both watch you burn to death.""If you kill me, you won't get away either.""I never planned to get out alive."She raised a torch, and a few of her thugs tipped over the fuel drums.Suddenly a car smashed through the iron gate.Luca got out covered in blood, with a gunshot wound in his left shoulder and another in his stomach.Sofia screamed, "Stop him!"The thugs charged at him with knives. Luca kept firing and, despite the knife wounds, made his way t

Three months after the wedding, Matteo joined forces with several families to go after Luca's business in Sicily. All eight of his money-laundering ports were seized, and at their meeting, the Council of Elders demanded he give up his position as Don."The Romano family has only given us seven days."One of the Elders pushed a file across the table to Luca. "Don, hand over the ports and the arms route, and the Ferraro family can still keep half its assets.""Get out."As soon as the meeting ended, several Frenchmen barged into the estate and slapped a loan agreement down on the table. The debtor named on the contract was Sofia. With interest, the debt came to sixty million euros. The man in charge spoke up. "Ms. Russo put up the Ferraro family's ports as collateral.""Who said you could put my property up as collateral?"Sofia grabbed the contract and flipped through a few pages, and the color drained from her face."These signatures are forged."The Frenchman sneered. "Every transfer

Matteo quickly restored order at the church. All the guards Luca had brought were disarmed, and the ceremony went ahead without any more trouble.Back at the Romano family's castle, I sat on the edge of the rose-covered bed and still hadn't changed out of my wedding dress.Under my skirt, the dark red petals of the tattoo on my inner thigh were marred by a few ugly cuts from the broken glass. When I got it five years ago, I'd thought it was Luca's mark on me.Only now did I understand that this rose had never belonged to me.The door opened. Matteo came in wearing a robe, holding a towel and some scar cream."Does it still hurt?""It's already scabbed over."He knelt on one knee in front of me and cleaned the wound with the warm towel first. When he saw me flinch back without thinking, Matteo stopped at once."Did I hurt you?""No.""Then why did you pull away?"After five years with Luca, I tensed at any intimate touch.Luca never asked if I wanted to.Whenever he wanted it, I had to

Aria's POV:In the Cathedral of the Holy Angels, I walked up the aisle on Matteo's arm.My father sat in the front row, his eyes red the whole time.Matteo and I had already married at the town hall that morning. The church ceremony was the big wedding he'd promised me.The priest opened the book. "Aria, do you take Matteo as your husband, to share with him the honor and the duties of his family?""I d—""She doesn't!"Someone kicked the heavy doors open, and the guests all turned.Luca stormed into the church with dozens of his guards, his black tie askew, his eyes bloodshot.Their guns swung around the room, and the Romano family's men drew theirs at the same moment.Matteo pulled me behind him. "Don Ferraro, you want to start a war at my wedding?""Move."Luca shoved past the men in his way, came up to me, and held out his hand."Aria, come back with me."His hand was shaking. For five years, no matter how he hurt me, all he had to do was hold out his hand and I'd go back to him.No

Luca's POV:The line went dead. For a long time, I just stood there. Then I looked down and saw I'd crushed the tube of burn ointment flat.Aria was getting married. The girl who used to drop her eyes the second I frowned was going to marry Matteo. It felt like something had been dug out of my chest. Even breathing hurt.Sofia came out with her hand bandaged and slipped her arm through mine. "Luca, let's go home. I'm tired.""Aria's hurt."Only after I said it did I realize how dry my throat was.Sofia stiffened. "You're blaming me?"One of my guards reported quietly, "We checked the hospital. Ms. Bianchi never registered."Is she really gone? For five years, every time I punished her, she'd wait outside my study until I'd cooled off. This time, she'd blocked me, and she was marrying someone else. When we got back to the estate, Sofia had the staff light scented candles and changed into a silk robe. She straddled my lap and pulled my hand under the hem of her robe. The rose tattoo came
