LOGINMy cheek stung as tears welled in my eyes. I had no idea what I had done this time—until I caught the quiet, satisfied smile spreading across Naya’s face.
“Gianna Valenti, how did you become such a filthy slut?” she roared, the words ringing through the foyer as tears spilled down my cheeks. “Screaming a man’s name in the middle of the night? Is this the pathetic way you try to keep a man?”
I looked at Naya. So she had called Mother to complain about me sleeping with my husband?
“Mother, what happens in our bedroom is between a husband and a wife,” I said softly, keeping my voice low. “No one else has a right to speak on it.”
“Gianna!” She lunged again, her palm raised to deliver another slap.
“Mother, no!” Naya rushed forward, stepping between us to 'rescue' me.
“You know how she is, Mother. She’s always been spoiled and stubborn,” Naya soothed, laying a gentle hand on her arm. “Please, don’t get provoked and cause a scene here.”
Our mother exhaled sharply, trying to regain her composure. “You’re always defending her, Naya. That’s why she turned out so undisciplined—so reckless and ungrateful.”
Reckless and ungrateful. Me?! Yeah, right.
It was the exact same script they had played my entire life. They could spend all morning worshipping Naya for all I cared, but Leone would finish his workout soon. If his coffee wasn't waiting, he would make everyone’s life hell.
I tried to walk past them toward the kitchen, but my mother’s hand clamped around my elbow, yanking me back into place.
“Where do you think you’re going?” she hissed. “I am not done with you.”
I looked at her, letting out a helpless sigh.
My mother stared back with clear disgust, her eyes scanning me from head to toe before stopping at my collarbone. That’s when I remembered the necklace still around my neck. Her scowl deepened instantly.
“You certainly don’t know how to dress like the wife of the most powerful man in the country. And look at this—”
She reached out and jerked the fabric off my shoulder, exposing the red, raw marks on my skin. “Wandering around with those on your body just makes you look pathetic.”
I bit my lip, heat rising to my face as I realized she was talking about the hickeys Leone had left on me last night. I pulled the robe back over my shoulder, covering myself.
“Mother, what do you actually want?” I asked directly. I didn't have the energy to stand here and endure any more of her humiliating comments.
“Since you can’t give Leone an heir, you aren’t worthy of being his wife,” she stated coldly. “Now that Naya is back, she will be Mrs. Romano. She will give him the children he’s always wanted. So don’t make a scene—just sign the divorce papers.”
I gawked at her in disbelief.
How could a mother have two completely different standards for her own daughters? I knew she had always favored Naya, but she knew about my struggle with PCOS. She knew how painful and difficult it had been for me to conceive. How could my own mother be this cruel?
“Gia!”
The cold, authoritative voice made everyone in the room stop breathing for a moment before the sound of his footsteps echoed through the hall. Naya and Mother immediately smiled at my husband, while I kept my head down, not daring to look at him in this state.
“Good morning, Leone,” my mother chirped with her sweetest smile.
“Morning, Leo,” Naya purred, stepping forward with practiced grace.
He swept an icy, unbothered gaze over both of them without offering a single word of reply. Instead, his cold demand was directed straight at me.
“My coffee.”
I nodded before turning toward the kitchen. But before I could take a single step, his large hand clamped around my wrist, making me stop. In the next breath, his massive frame filled my vision, stepping directly into my path.
His fingers gripped my jaw, his thumb tilting my face up until his grey eyes narrowed in irritation.
“What happened to your face?”
I looked over at my mother. The look on her face said everything: open your mouth, and you’ll get hit again. I wanted to tell her to go ahead and try it, but someone else jumped in before I could utter a word.
“Leone, your wife is a troublemaker. What else do you expect?”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes when my mother-in-law, Lucia Romano, came into sight. I knew that no matter what I said now, Leone wouldn't believe me. Not when it came to her. He practically worshipped his mother, and honestly, I couldn't blame him. She raised him and his sister by herself after his father walked out to pursue his dreams and never came back.
To Leone, his mother could do no wrong.
But… what I never understood was her hatred for me. She always acted like I was completely beneath her son, like I didn't deserve to be Leone’s wife. Naya was her favorite, just like she was everyone else’s.
“Who did this to you?”
Leone’s question caught me completely off guard. Did he just ignore his mother? That was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

Before I could reply, my sister jumped in and answered on my behalf. “Leo, Mother was worried about her. But Gia argued with her. You know how she behaves. You know how she gets. Mom lost her temper, but it wasn't even a hard hit. It's just her soft, plump cheeks. My cute little sister has always been like this. You barely touch her skin, and it leaves a mark.” She giggled, as if she found it amusing. “Even her skin helps her with her theatrics.” Her words sounded like a joke, but the accusation behind them was clear. Naya pulled me away from Leone and threw her arms around me, putting on a big show of sisterly affection, before pulling back to kiss the cheek that was still stinging from the slap. Leone’s eyes turned cold as he glowered at my mother. “Mrs. Valenti, you slapped my wife?” My mother visibly shook under his threatening tone, stammering out a quiet, “I… I…” Before she could defend herself, my mother-in-law stepped in again. “Leone, it’s between mother and daughter. “Leo, please, don’t blame her,” Naya whimpered, looking up at him through a sheen of tears. Calling him by that intimate pet name right in front of me was a calculated move to provoke me, but I refused to take the bait. “She’s my sister. She’s just angry... and naive.”Leone’s eyes snapped to mine. I braced myself, waiting for the inevitable explosion—waiting for him to scream at me.“You did this?!” His cold voice sounded quiet, completely unreadable and devoid of any emotion.I didn’t bother replying. I stayed silent because, no matter what I said, everyone had always believed Naya. And he was in love with her. There was no way in hell he was going to believe me if I said I hadn't touched her.He simply shook his head and lifted her into his arms. I let out an inaudible huff.“No, Leo, put me down! She won’t like it,” Naya cried, playing her role to perfection. “I’ll leave... I’ll never come back...”“Stop it, Naya. You’re staying in the guest room, and that's final,” he said coldly
My heart clenched despite knowing how he felt about her when his hands rested on her slim waist. I averted my eyes and got up, trying to pull my zipper closed behind me.“What are you doing here?” I heard Leone ask my sister.“To see you, my love.” She said it in her most sensual voice, and I let out a frustrated breath. Why couldn’t I speak like her?“It’s late,” he said as he gently pushed her away and turned to look at me.“Yeah, and I’m staying here tonight,” she whispered sweetly.I was still struggling with my zipper. When I looked toward the door, I found Naya’s blue eyes, identical to mine, fixed on me with disgust. But then her gaze fell on the necklace around my neck, and I saw a flash of jealousy in her eyes before she quickly masked her expression.“Gia, what are you doing?” she giggled innocently, but the mockery in her voice wasn’t hidden from me. “We are here, and you’re removing your dress. Don’t be so shameless.”Then she placed a hand on Leone’s arm and whispered, “P
“What did you say?”His voice turned colder as he snapped around and glared at me.The anger in his steel-grey eyes made me lower mine.“I said…” I swallowed, wetting my dry lips. “Now that your first love is back, we should get an annulment.”One moment, he was glaring at me from three feet away. The next, he was standing right in front of me.His arm closed around my waist, and he turned me toward the mirror. His hard, bare chest pressed against my back, making me shiver despite the thin fabric of my dress between us. Before I could react, he snatched the necklace from my hand. The sudden pull made my fingers sting. His grip tightened around my waist as his angry expression reflected in the mirror.“Playing hard to get, huh?” His voice was low and cold as he slid the necklace around my neck. “You disgust me, Gia. You know very well that in famiglia, divorce never happens.”He leaned closer to fasten the clasp behind my neck, using his teeth. His lips brushed my skin, making me clos
Gianna’s POVThe dark sky erupted with blinding lights as hundreds of firecrackers burst into the air.I stood near the wall-to-ceiling window, watching the fireworks with stunned eyes because this… watching fireworks had been my favorite thing since childhood. And tonight, it was my husband who was making it happen. But not for me.It was for his first love, Naya. For her birthday.I had seen the report on the news earlier—that Leone had bought out every fireworks display in the city and ordered them to keep the sky lit until dawn. The report also claimed that Leone was planning to marry his longtime girlfriend.Marry her? How?He was already married to me—Naya’s younger sister, Gianna Valenti, the fat, unwanted outcast of the family. However, Leone had never acknowledged our marriage publicly. He never took me to an event, a gala, or any celebration where other wives stood proudly beside their husbands. I was always left at home, waiting for him like a dutiful, loyal wife while he
