Chapter 4

Auteur: Rising Cloud in the Mist
On his deathbed, my father had said to Hugh, “Tasmin is a cold, heartless monster. She’s ruthless and selfish to the core.

“Hugh, if you choose her, you’ll live to regret it.”

After leaving the hospital, I went to the racetrack to drive.

Hugh’s words kept echoing in my mind the entire time.

The wind was bitterly cold, and it stung my skin.

“Ms. Sheargold, all the videos have been taken down. We found out that someone on the Northside is the one who did it.”

I glanced at Bennet’s grim expression.

Bennet added, “Mr. Castillo left the hospital and went to the old estate. The consigliere is calling you in now. It doesn’t look like they’re inviting you for tea.”

I nodded and instructed him to prepare a few items for me.

By the time I arrived at the Sheargold family’s mansion, Hugh was seated imposingly in the main chair.

A signet ring lay beside his hand.

This ring was the token of authority for the head of the Sheargold family.

I had searched for it for years. I did not expect my father to have given it to Hugh.

My second uncle, Arnold Sheargold, walked over furiously, leaning on his cane.

Bennet, seeing the hostile arrival, instinctively moved forward but remained humble.

“Bennet, you’ve been with the Sheargold family for years, yet you enable Tasmin’s actions and let her make a fool of herself and us out there!”

Arnold let out a cold snort and ordered his men to force me to stand before my father’s portrait.

“The head of the Sheargold family has always been the one who proves themselves most capable. Tasmin, you rule like a tyrant. You don’t even have the signet ring. The Sheargold family doesn’t belong in the hands of someone like you!

“From today, everything under you in the Sheargold family will be handed over to Hugh. Until that’s done, you’ll be grounded here, and you’ll properly atone to your father!”

‘Atone? How absurd!’ I thought.

Over the years, I had exhausted myself expanding the Sheargold family’s empire. We had nearly monopolized the entire Northside.

When things had stabilized, they wanted to cast me aside and reap the rewards. What a classic case of using someone up and throwing them away!

I had been training to fight since childhood, so I turned and threw the bodyguard behind me to the floor.

The moment I fought back, chaos erupted in the hall.

Hugh stepped forward and restrained me from behind. I bent down and landed a solid punch on him.

He did not block my attack. Instead, he kicked me hard in the knee.

The pain made me buckle, and both my knees gave way as I fell toward the doorway.

A pair of light-colored high heels came into view.

Lana stood above me in a white dress, looking down at me in contempt.

Hugh pressed the back of my head down and slammed my forehead hard against the floor.

“Taz, stop being so delusional! This apology is long overdue. It’s what you owe Lana.”

The pain in my forehead was sharp, and I could feel the blood trickling down.

Lana lunged forward, grabbed me, and slapped me hard across the face twice.

“Give me back my child, you trash!”

Her fingernails scratched bloody marks across my cheeks.

Hugh released me, then wrapped his arms around Lana. She was hysterical. He held her and comforted her. “Lana, don’t be scared. I’m right here. You’re okay.”

I felt rage burn in me as I reached for my waist, only to find my sidearm missing.

Hugh was holding it in his hand as he scooped up the frantic Lana in his arms.

He glanced back at my disheveled state and pursed his lips.

“I’m taking Lana somewhere else. Until then, you stay right here and think about what you’ve done.”

The heavy doors were locked from the outside.

I stood up and looked at everything in the hall.

I laughed so hard that tears streamed down my face.

I smashed every single thing in the hall to pieces.

In the dead of night, flames began to glow from within the hall.

The fire grew fiercer. By the time Hugh arrived, the entire hall had already been consumed by a blaze.

Arnold and the other consigliere stood nearby. They were so furious that they nearly fainted.

Hugh yelled frantically, “Put out the fire! Taz is still in there! Hurry and save her!”

“Hugh, don’t go in! It’s not safe!”

Lana hugged him from behind.

His panic only grew worse. That was when Bennet appeared, limping toward them.

When everyone saw what Bennet was holding, Hugh stopped struggling, and everyone present stood rooted in speechless shock.

I slapped Hugh again. His head snapped to the side. His hair fell over his eyes and made his face unreadable. His hand reached his waist and drew the very sidearm he had taken from me that day.He put the gun in my palm, wrapped my finger around the trigger, and pointed the muzzle at his heart.“Do you feel better?“If not, you can pull the trigger.”I let out an exasperated laugh.“Hugh, you really are pathetic! You think I don’t have it in me?”That gaze of his brought back every ounce of past hatred in an instant. My hand trembled slightly. In the end, I swung the butt of the gun and struck him across the face.“Killing you would only mess up the new life I’ve built for myself.“You’re not worth my hands getting dirty.”I stood up and walked away. Through the French window, I caught the reflection of Hugh’s motionless figure. He looked as if he had lost his soul.…That night, Bennet rushed over in a panic. He did not exchange any pleasantries. “Do whatever you want to her. This time, I won’t stop you.”I looked down at Lana. She was quivering as she covered her ears and mumbled something incoherent to herself. She had clearly lost her mind.“Hugh, even if you drive her insane or kill her, does it change anything?”The night breeze was cold. I swept my gaze across the vibrant flowers and trees surrounding us.I said calmly, “Soon enough, you’ll find out what I actually like.”As night came, a sudden fire broke out in the estate. The blaze consumed miles of flowers and trees, reducing everything to ashes. When Hugh rushed over with a pale face, I smiled and said, “You see it now? This is what I call beautiful.”I let out a few carefree laughs, hummed a little tune, and went back to sleep. That night, Hugh stood in the courtyard without sleeping a wink.He did not order anyone to stop the fire.He simply stood there, motionless, through the entire night.…At dawn, I was woken by a commotion.Arnold barged into

A single gunshot drove the noisy crowd to silence.Hugh’s hand, which was about to reach for his weapon, was pierced by a bullet. It was left dripping with blood.I kept my arm extended in the firing position. Then, I calmly placed the sidearm back into Wilde’s hand and met Hugh’s shocked gaze.“Hugh, how do you have the nerve to show up in front of me again?”Hugh clutched his bleeding hand.He did not let out a single cry of pain and just stared at me with teary eyes.“Taz, please come home with me.”I could not help but let out a sneer.Hugh still believed that he and I had a home to go to.My reaction hurt Hugh deeply. He forced a strained smile and said, “Taz, you promised that no matter what, we would never leave each other behind.”His voice remained gentle, but the words that came out sent chills down everyone’s spine.“If you won’t come with me, then we can die together here.”With that, he tore open his coat to reveal rows of explosives strapped around his body.

Wilde paused, then looked at me. “What reputation?“Also, I take ‘til death do us part’ thing seriously. There’s no such thing as divorce with me.”He let out a chuckle and floored the gas pedal. The car accelerated forward at breakneck speed and made my heart race.“If you want, we can die together right now.”The harsh wind howled past us.I finally smiled as my heart began to race faster.“Wilde, you really are insane!”He smiled back with the same wild defiance.“Tasmin, opportunities go to the ones who deserve them. If some idiot fumbles them, that’s his problem.“People who are considered insane are always bound to end up in the same place.“We’re made for each other.”… During my time in the Rafferty family’s mansion, I occasionally received news from the Southside. After my fake death, Hugh had gone completely insane. He had become even more sullen and obsessive than before. The Sheargold consigliere declared me a traitor, unworthy of the family name. That’s why she can never have children again.“Do you know she’s had chronic injuries in her knees for years? Every time the weather gets cold, the pain hits so hard she can barely stand it. That came from all those years of praying on her knees at temples and churches for your safety.“She tested thousands of drugs on herself for you. Her health was destroyed. She always felt deep sorrow that she couldn’t bear children. How could you do this to her for another woman?”Bennet had watched me grow up since I was a child. His eyes welled up with tears as he spoke.Back then, I had chosen to bear all the pain alone so that Hugh would not feel guilty. All these years, I prayed to God, not just for him but also out of remorse for the twins I had terminated.Hugh stared stiffly at the two t
