Boston, Massachusetts

“Ding...”

The doorbell snapped Evelyn out of her thoughts. She turned toward the sound, frowning slightly. Who would be here this early?

“Miss Evelyn Sinclair?”

“Yes, that’s me,” she said, opening the door.

A delivery guy stood on the porch, polite smile in place as he handed her a small box. “Got a package for you. Mind signing here?”

“Thanks.” Evelyn took the pen and signed.

When she handed it back, the courier hesitated with an apologetic look. “Sorry about the delay. The previous courier had some issues, so your package got held up for over a month. Hope it’s not a problem?”

Evelyn offered a faint smile. “No problem.”

She got deliveries all the time. A late one here or there hardly registered anymore. Closing the door, she glanced at the box in her hands. A month ago? I don’t even remember ordering anything.

Before she could open it, a faint burnt smell wafted in from the kitchen.

“Oh, crap.” Evelyn rushed toward the stove.

The kitchen was already hazy with s

Evelyn stayed calm, barely flinching at the sarcastic tone dripping from Camilla’s voice.“I just don’t get it,” she said flatly. “Miss Summers said this dress was inappropriate, but she wants to try it on herself. So which one’s inappropriate, the dress, or the person wearing it?”Camilla smiled, clearly pleased with herself, her expression relaxed but smug.“Doesn’t matter what you say. You already lost, Evelyn. When Sebastian and I get married, I’ll make sure you get an invitation.”“So I should thank you for your generosity, huh?”“Of course. People who know their place are usually wiser. No one who goes against me ends up doing well. Anyway, this dress? I’ll take it.”She waved at the sales clerk.“Wrap it up, I’ll pay for it now.”The clerk hesitated. “I’m sorry, but I can’t just...”“You don’t understand what I said?” Camilla snapped. “I said I’m buying it.”But Evelyn cut in, her voice calm, yet sharp enough to slice through the tension.“Camilla Summers, I don’t remembe

Even though Madison wasn’t working, her social circle was still wide. She had plenty of connections who kept in touch with her. She looked at Chloe with a calm expression that carried a deeper meaning.“The problem with Lucas right now is that the board thinks he’s incompetent, right? If you can help him land a big project and shut them up, my uncle won’t be able to do anything.”Chloe looked at Madison hopefully. “You have a way? Why didn’t you say so from the start?”Madison’s lips curved into a faint smile. “I do, but nothing in this world comes for free. There’s always a price to pay.”Her tone was soft, but her eyes slowly swept over Chloe from head to toe. “You’re still young, Chloe. While you’ve still got that charm, there are a lot of things you can get more easily.”Chloe didn’t catch the hidden meaning behind her words. Her face lit up with enthusiasm instead. “If it can help Lucas and save Callahan Group, I’ll do whatever it takes.”Madison gave a faint smile, though there

At Reed Group Headquarters, Boston.“Excuse me, did you make an appointment? The Marketing Director, Mr. Nathan, isn’t in the office today.”The receptionist’s tone was polite but firm, enough to stop Evelyn Sinclair right in front of the desk.Delilah, standing beside her, let out a quiet scoff. “It’s pretty obvious they don’t want to see us.”Evelyn frowned. “Not necessarily. Let’s wait for the outcome before jumping to conclusions.”“Anna’s been here three times, and she’s never met anyone. You really think there’s still an ‘outcome’ to wait for?” Delilah shot her a skeptical look. “If you ask me, you should just go talk to Sebastian directly.”“No way.”“Why are you so damn stubborn? The shortcut’s right in front of you, and you’d rather take the long way around. If you just talk to Sebastian nicely, wouldn’t that increase your chances of getting the project?”Evelyn looked at her for a moment, her voice calm. “Everything has its time, Del. I don’t mix personal matters with work.

The office was dead quiet. The only sound was Sebastian’s heavy breathing, deep and strained, like he was holding back an anger that could explode any second. The air felt thick, charged, as if a single spark could set the whole room on fire.Evelyn, however, didn’t flinch. She stared at him calmly, without the slightest hint of fear. She stood tall, unyielding. Evelyn Sinclair had always been that way, steadfast, grounded. She didn’t back down easily, especially not under pressure. The door slammed shut with a deafening thud. Sebastian had thrown it hard enough to make the sound echo across the entire floor.A few seconds later, Delilah burst in, her face pale with panic.“What was that noise?” she asked, looking at Evelyn, who was sitting casually on the sofa, sipping her tea as if nothing had happened.“Nothing,” Evelyn said flatly. “You want some tea?”Delilah glanced toward the door, toward the direction Sebastian had gone. “Did you two fight again?”Evelyn didn’t answer. She o

“Besides that, you owe me an apology.”“An apology?” Lucas’s face darkened instantly. He shot a quick glance at Sebastian before giving Evelyn a cold, mocking smile. “Got a little power and now you think you’re untouchable, huh?”Evelyn’s lips curved into a cool smile. “You really think I didn’t know you’d show up here and make a scene?”As soon as she said that, the curtains behind her automatically slid open. Through the glass wall, a silhouette appeared, someone was recording the entire mess with a phone as Lucas and his men trashed the office.“Anna!” everyone gasped in shock.Anna was Evelyn’s new assistant, barely a week into the job, so she’d mostly gone unnoticed since joining the company.“Mr. Callahan,” Evelyn said calmly but firmly, “you still want to deny this? Because we can call the police right now.”Lucas’s face went pale.Evelyn didn’t look away. “I don’t need anyone to protect me. I’m my own protector.”“Evelyn Sinclair,” Lucas said through gritted teeth, his voice t
