Ping.

The transfer notification came through. Vivian Hart had sent me the $200,000 after all.

I managed a stiff little smile. Some things never changed. Beneath that sharp tongue, she still had the softest heart I knew.

I was at the hospital cashier's window when a stir broke out behind me. Since losing my sight, I'd grown almost absurdly sensitive to sounds. Judging by the crowd gathering and the sudden flurry of footsteps, somebody important must have arrived.

I unfolded my white cane and felt my way toward a quiet corner, where I settled down to wait for my specialist to call my name.

A familiar pair of heels clicked twice across the floor. Then stopped directly in front of me.

Thinking I was blocking someone's path, I lowered my head and started to fold up my cane.

"I just sent you two hundred grand," a woman said. Her voice was unmistakable, even wrapped in contempt. "If you're going to sell yourself to me, the least you can do is look up and smile for your sugar mama."

A pause.

"It's been a while, Ryan."

Vivian.

My hand clenched around the handle of my cane. I'd imagined this reunion a thousand times over the past five years. Now that she was here, every word I'd saved up vanished.

I settled for the most careless grin I could manage and held up my phone with my payment app already open.

"Another fifty thousand and I'll smile a whole lot wider."

My shamelessness infuriated her. The next instant she grabbed my arm and hauled me out of the chair.

My body had already been ravaged by illness. The sudden pull sent a hot blade of pain through my stomach.

"Ryan, do you have no shame at all?" she shouted.

I didn't answer.

Someone hurried over to soothe her. "Viv, calm down. Is this...your ex?"

I'd heard that voice often enough on television to recognize it. Blake Prescott, the actor the tabloids had been linking to Vivian.

I couldn't see him inspecting me, but I could hear the disgust in his polished voice.

"He's asking for more? Fifty grand wouldn't even buy Vivian a pair of shoes. I'll give it to you. Consider it my thanks for you not marrying her."

I gave a humorless smile. The offer didn't make it any easier to breathe.

My mind slipped back five years.

Vivian had always been warm and beautiful. Above all, there were her eyes, so bright and expressive that I could never find the right words for them.

She'd been the standout student in our university's acting program. I was a penniless kid from a small town, with no family, no connections, and very little to offer. I never understood what she saw in me.

But she loved me. Somehow, that had been enough.

Even back then, the film industry had begun to notice her extraordinary eyes. I was working as hard as I could to build a career of my own, determined to give us a future.

Then fate played its cruelest trick on us.

Vivian rarely had visitors. It was usually Nora or a delivery driver, so I got up to answer the door without thinking. The moment I opened it, someone shoved me with enough force to send me sprawling across the floor.Blake Prescott's furious voice filled the entryway."Do you have any idea what kind of opportunity she's turning down? You're practically a dead man, Ryan. Can't you stop ruining Vivian's life?"Vivian came running when she heard the crash. She pulled Blake away from me."What's wrong with you? He can't see! What kind of man picks on someone who's blind? If you have something to say, come outside and say it to me."Blake wasn't listening. He wanted me to hear every word."Fine, Vivian. I'm the one who leaked his story to the press. If you want to come after me for that, go ahead. But I did it for you. Your career is taking off. You love acting. And now you're quitting the industry for a man who's dying. You're the one who's lost your mind."For a moment, I couldn'

I don't know which part of that ridiculous little sentence finally broke her.Vivian accepted the tissues with a trembling hand. Then she folded herself into my arms and began to sob.At first she tried to keep quiet. But it was as though something inside her had split open, and the harder she tried to hold it together, the worse the crying became.I sat frozen against the car seat, unable to think of a single useful thing to say. I could only let her hold on until the front of my shirt was soaked with tears.I couldn't see how red her beautiful eyes had become."Ryan," she whispered at last, "I'm a big star now. I have money. A lot of money. Fifty thousand, two hundred thousand—I can afford either one. I've worked with charities for years. I know doctors, really good doctors."Her voice shrank to almost nothing."It'll be okay. They'll find a way to treat you. Please don't be afraid. They'll make you better."I couldn't tell whether she was trying to convince me or herself.I

Vivian sounded almost unnaturally calm when Nora explained what had happened. I supposed a woman who lived under the spotlight was used to having every move magnified. What I hadn't expected was that this time, I was the one being hunted online."Someone tipped off the press about how he left you for money," Nora said. "Some of your more extreme fans have started digging into his life. They've found his old records, his Social Security number...even which hospital he's in. If we don't do something—""I'll leave," I interrupted. "I don't like hospitals anyway. I'm more comfortable at home."Vivian hesitated. Dr. Ellis must have told her nearly everything while I was unconscious. If she'd had her way, I would have stayed and received whatever treatment was still possible.Instead, she said, "Come stay with me."I went still. "Vivian, no.""If they found your hospital, they can find your apartment. My house is more private, and you need somewhere quiet to recover. I'll help you pac

I drifted in darkness so complete it seemed to have weight. Somewhere nearby, a heart monitor kept up its steady electronic beeping. My fingertips moved. Something warm and soft pressed against them.I opened my eyes. The world was as black as it had been for the past five years, and for a while I couldn't quite remember where I was.Vivian shot to her feet beside the bed and hit the call button. When she realized I was awake and staring sightlessly ahead, she caught my hand. She tried to say something, but tears got there first."You..."Her voice cracked. She leaned over the bed and cried quietly.I couldn't see where she was. I reached into the empty air until my bandaged hand brushed against hers. I patted it awkwardly."Ms. Hart, don't cry. I just embarrassed myself in front of a room full of people and got a little worked up. I'll rest for a couple of days and be fine."I gave her a faint smile. "Besides, if you cry too much, your eyes will swell up. They won't be nearly

After a long silence, I managed a shameless little smile."You don't need to keep me. I wouldn't want to damage the great Vivian Hart's reputation. Just give me fifty thousand dollars. Cash."For a moment, I heard nothing but her sharply drawn breath. When she finally answered, she sounded as though she had forced the word through clenched teeth."Fine."I put one hand on the wall and began feeling for the steps.Vivian might have meant to give me a chance, but the people around her had already decided I was a greedy fraud. Blake, in particular, wasn't going to let me climb in peace.I'd gone only a few steps when my foot landed on something slick.Chopped fruit. Someone had scattered pieces across the stairs.I lost my balance instantly. My knee struck the edge of a marble step with a dull crack. I couldn't hold back a small groan.Vivian moved toward me. I heard her shoes scrape the floor, quick and urgent.Blake caught her before she reached me."If he can't do it, he can

"Someone in Room 316 requested me," I told Katie. "I'd better get upstairs."It was a lie. No one had asked for me. I only wanted to run away before Vivian could find out I worked here. With my head down, I made for the stairwell leading to the fourth-floor staff lounge.I didn't get far.Someone stepped directly into my path and drove a shoulder into me. I hit the floor before I could catch myself."What the hell is wrong with you?" Blake shouted. "You knock someone over and don't even apologize?"He'd done it deliberately. I knew it. But the familiar pain was already stirring in my stomach, and I didn't have the strength for another confrontation.I struggled upright and lowered my head."I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to bump into you. I'm very sorry."My meek response apparently caught him off guard."Sorry? That's it?" he demanded. "You think an apology makes everything fine? Get your manager. I'd like to know how this place trains its staff."His voice carried down the
