Chapter 2

Author: Clear Creek
Mom had been thinking about me and the company even on her deathbed.

But it wasn't even a month later when Dad came back with Alicia and Christina, letting them barge into my home and treat it as theirs instead.

Maybe Dad had already planned to steal everything away from me from that very moment onward.

I sat in my bedroom for a long, long time. I thought a lot about things until the back of my shirt was drenched in sweat.

In the end, I made a call to my aunt, Heather Miller, Mom's younger sister. She was a renowned top lawyer in the industry.

"Cher? Why did you suddenly call me up?" Aunt Heather asked in surprise.

"Aunt Heather, I need a temporary ID card," I said, hesitating slightly. "Also, can you please help me check the status of my academic records and where my real Starward University direct admission letter is?"

There were a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone.

Aunt Heather was smart. She immediately put two and two together.

"Did something happen?"

I replied, "Dad gave me a fake direct admission letter from Starward. I need to get to the bottom of this."

I took a deep breath.

After all, I was the national math champion, and it was supposed to have been more than enough to warrant a direct admission into the top college in the country for me.

That was why I never even questioned the authenticity of the direct admission letter in my hand.

"I'll get on it," Aunt Heather said at once.

Half an hour later, she came to pick me up from school. She took the admission letter from me and looked at it.

"They even managed to forge such a realistic stamp. Melvin's such a beast! How dare he try to deceive his own daughter like this?"

She gritted her teeth and put my letter into a case file folder. She then told me, "I've checked the direct admission system, and your name isn't in it at all. You're just a regular high school student. If you don't sit for the college entrance exam tomorrow, you'll fail it for absenteeism."

I bit on my lower lip. It was turning out just as I thought.

"But although your name wasn't in the system, I saw Christina's name there," Aunt Heather said, her voice turning solemn.

I cocked an eyebrow in confusion.

Christina Cooper? My stepsister?

But she always got the worst grades in class. How could she possibly be directly admitted into Starward University?

"We're a little short on time, so I haven't found out the reason she's on the direct admissions list yet," Aunt Heather said.

"I'm taking you to get your temporary ID for now. I've also asked someone to reprint your exam slip for you. Take the college entrance exam tomorrow like normal for now."

I looked outside the window and nodded.

Thankfully, there was still time to change things around.

The college entrance exam lasts for two days. For the next two days, I left home early every day and only returned late at night.

Even if the direct admission letter was fake, I had real brains and abilities to back myself up.

I didn't necessarily need that piece of paper to get into Starward or any other top institutions and colleges in the country.

As usual, nobody at home paid any attention to me.

Once, Alicia accidentally walked into my room by mistake.

When she saw that my eyes were closed, she scoffed coldly and mumbled to herself, "She's still sleeping? Did she really think she was a top scorer now just because of a fake piece of paper?

"What an idiot. Let's see how hard she's gonna cry when the college entrance exam results are released next month!"

The door then shut behind her.

I chuckled coldly in the dark.

Sure. I couldn't wait until the results were released the next month either. But I was looking forward to seeing who else would be crying if it wasn't me.

After the exam was over, Dad suddenly invited me to a family dinner with him and Christina, something that he'd never, ever done before.

"Chrissy's just finished her exam, Cher, and it's been some time since we had a proper meal together as a family. You must come with us this time."

I spared a glance at Christina, who was lazing on the couch next to me.

She might have looked as though she went to sit for the college entrance exam these days, but I knew she was actually out shopping for a luxury car with Dad and Alicia.

Aunt Heather had found out and told me about it. She also told me that she highly suspected that Christina had somehow managed to replace me in the direct admissions system.

"Alright. Let's have dinner together," I said, a corner of my mouth lifting.

I wanted to see what other tricks they had up their sleeves.

Dad was obviously excited and popped open a few bottles of expensive red wine to celebrate. And after a few hours of drinking, he finally let some of his true colors slip.

"Cher, I've been facing some cash flow issues at the company lately… There's a project that requires mortgaging some of our assets…"

He then looked at me in his tipsy state.

I didn't attend any of the court hearings. It wasn't because I was afraid to face them. I just didn't think that it was necessary. I didn't need to witness anyone's downfall to confirm that I had finally stood up again.Christina sent me a text message."Are you finally happy now, Cheryl? I'll never forgive you for this! I'll remember this for the rest of my life!"I thought about her fate and decided that she had to be suffering even more than if she were thrown in prison. This scandal had spread throughout the country, and everyone knew that she was a horrible student and even tried to steal my direct admissions spot from me.No matter where she went, someone would instantly recognize her and point her out. She'd gone viral online after all.In the days that followed, I occasionally heard snippets of information about her from Aunt Heather.Apparently, she'd tried relocating to a different city and starting over, but every time someone searched her up online or tried to do a

The fact that Sonya was even willing to speak up at the last moment was probably the most she could have mustered her courage to do."How are things with Seth, by the way?"I remembered her telling me about her younger brother, Seth Bradshaw, in the past. He'd always been having health problems since he was young.Sonya was obviously taken aback. She didn't think that I'd remember what she told me."He's still receiving treatment, and the medical costs are quite high… But it's fine. I found two part-time jobs during the summer, so we should be able to manage just well."I retrieved a bank card from my purse and handed it to her."There's 200 thousand dollars on this," I said. "It's not much, but it should be able to help your brother get through this."Sonya hurriedly shook her head and pushed it back to me."No way! You've already helped me so much. I can't take your money as well.""This isn't charity," I said, stuffing the card into her hand. "This is the value of what you

Alicia's voice was hoarse. She pleaded, "Please help me! I really can't stay here for another day! Your dad forced me into this! He was the one who told me to transfer out the money. I really didn't know anything about it!"Tears welled in her eyes. However, I just sat calmly across her, quietly watching her through the glass partition."I didn't come here to listen to your complaints," I said. "I only came here to tell you something."I then retrieved a photocopy of a paternity test from my bag and pressed it against the glass for her to read.Alicia's face turned pale at once.As it turned out, right after Mom passed away, Aunt Heather had suspicions that the relationship between Dad and Alicia wasn't as simple as Dad simply remarrying after losing his wife. And so, she took advantage of this case to investigate further and realized that Dad and Alicia had been in contact long before Mom passed away. After the paternity test was out, Aunt Heather finally confirmed her suspi

Christina's mouth fell agape. She was utterly dumbfounded.I continued smirking at her as I said, "I deliberately made you guys think that you had it in the bag so you'd let your guards down and make this an extremely grand affair. I deliberately let you guys invite all the prominent people in the city."Because I wanted to tear off your hypocritical fake masks and expose all your horrible deeds in public! Do you get me now?"My voice shook slightly at the end.I did it.I'd done it all. These people who tried to hurt me were finally getting the punishments they deserved.Christina collapsed to the ground, her eyes turning dull as the light in them went out.I turned to the guests and said, "I'm sorry for airing our dirty laundry in public, everyone. But there's something I need to tell you today."I then retrieved a sheet of paper from the document folder that Aunt Heather handed to me. It was an official college entrance exam score certificate stamped by the National College

"This is what my aunt's law firm discovered over the past 20 days," I said, glancing at the shareholders and business partners below the stage. Their faces were all dark and ashen."Melvin Cooper did not just forge an official direct admission letter from a national educational institution to deceive me. "He also illegally transferred over 500 million dollars' worth of Cooper Group's assets to his personal account through shell companies established by his brother-in-law, Anthony Mack, over the past three years."Dear partners and shareholders present, perhaps you would like to calculate just how much of that 500 million dollars came from your pockets!"Upon hearing this, the tension in the air finally reached its breaking point."Melvin Cooper! Where the fuck did you transfer our money to?" a major shareholder yelled, slamming his fist on the table as he jumped to his feet in rage."I invested three million dollars into your company! And you're telling me that you pocketed ever

The smile on Dad's face froze for a moment."A gift? What gift?"He subconsciously turned his head toward Christina.Alicia didn't look pleased, but since everyone present was a prominent figure in the city, she couldn't possibly show her anger or displeasure on the stage. So, she had no choice but to force a smile onto her lips."You're so thoughtful, Cheryl. That's how sisters are."Christina looked pretty smug as she crossed her arms over her chest and smirked disdainfully at me."Sure, Cher. What gift do you have for me? Let's show it to everyone."I grinned. Then, I turned around and nodded at the staff in charge of the large screen projector. Aunt Heather had already prepared everything in advance for me.The screen flickered for a second. Then, recorded footage was displayed on the massive screen. It was footage from a CCTV camera. A middle-aged man walked into a deserted print shop and pushed a file folder across the counter. He said, "Make it as realistic as possi
