Chapter 1 The Flaw Nobody Noticed

Autor: Goodtale
When I pushed the conference room door open, I wasn't surprised to see everyone staring at the giant screen on the wall.

The screen might as well be a sea of red.

After all, the company's clearing accounts were frozen, which meant that transfer permissions were locked. As a result, client authorization requests were piling up by the second.

My father, Richard Langford, sat at the head of the table with an unlit cigarette between his fingers. Usually, he would raise hell if anyone were to smoke in the conference room. Yet, today, he clearly had bigger things to worry about.

"Who let you in?"

My cousin, Ryan, was the first to notice me. He kept his voice low, almost as if my presence alone might somehow make the situation worse.

"I was just passing by," I said lightly, setting the box of mechanical keyboard keycaps I'd been carrying beside the door. "I heard quite a commotion when I did."

My father looked up, his brows furrowed. "This isn't one of your games, George."

"I know." I glanced at the projection screen. "It sure doesn't look like you guys are having much fun."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Dylan Bowers, a cybersecurity consultant, slid a printed report across the table. "At 3:12 a.m. yesterday, someone exploited a flaw in our authorization system and changed the fund transfer rules."

He tapped the report. "The problem is, there's no record of anyone logging in. Every server is running normally, network traffic looks clean, and all authentication checks are passing."

Leon Hudson, the chief systems architect, was quick to interject, "George, this isn't some hacker movie. Permissions don't just change on their own. If someone altered them, there has to be evidence somewhere. We just haven't found it yet."

Xavier Shannon, the federal regulatory representative, checked his watch before speaking, "You've already been given your final deadline. You have 24 hours to restore the system and submit a complete incident report."

He turned toward my father. "If you fail, Langford Group's operating license will be suspended. The company will also be held responsible for the five billion dollars in affected client assets."

Ryan swallowed hard and barely managed to say, "We still have time."

"Having time doesn't mean you can sit around reassuring yourselves that everything will be fine," Xavier snapped in frustration.

I'd long stopped paying attention to their argument by then.

Instead, my eyes were glued to the system architecture diagram projected onto the wall. It displayed the company's firewalls, identity management servers, payment gateways, and fund transfer services in clear display. They were even linked in a complicated web of lines and boxes.

Yet, it still took me less than ten seconds to spot something strange.

It was located near the bottom of the diagram, a thin gray line representing the payment gateway's persistent connection channel.

I pointed at it and asked, "Did anyone check this?"

Leon followed my finger and frowned. "Of course. We've checked every interface."

"How long does that connection stay open?" I questioned.

"It follows the standard configuration."

"Which is?"

He hesitated for a moment before answering, "30 seconds."

I raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that?"

Dylan flipped through the documents in front of him. "The configuration logs do say 30 seconds."

I couldn't help smiling. "Yes, but that's just what the logs say. It doesn't mean that's what's actually happening."

My father's expression darkened. "George, enough. Stop wasting everyone's time."

I ignored him and pointed at the gray line again. "Your authentication system revalidates access every 30 seconds, right? But the payment gateway allows existing connections to stay open."

I turned toward Leon. "If those connections stay active longer than the authentication window, someone could swap out the request payload between security checks without triggering a new authentication request."

Leon gave a dismissive laugh. "You've never even touched our codebase. What makes you think you've suddenly found a vulnerability that our entire team missed?"

"Because it's right there," I retorted, but I didn't bother explaining further.

Red warnings kept flashing one after another on the giant screen across the conference room. More requests had piled up with every passing second during our back-and-forth, adding pressure to everyone around the table.

Dylan finally raised his head. "What exactly are you referring to?"

I pointed at the payment gateway again. "The one thing nobody in this room thought to question."

I paused and looked around the table, making sure everyone was paying attention.

"If every security system is working perfectly, every login is legitimate, and every authentication check is passing..." I tapped the gray line on the screen. "Then, how the hell did someone steal your authority to move five billion dollars?"

One month later, the first phase of Langford Group's security overhaul was finally complete. All critical access permissions now relied on short-lived credentials, and we'd revoked every old encryption key. We split the logging service into three independent systems that continuously cross-checked one another, and we ran a separate security audit on every sensitive request. We'd also deployed decoy systems throughout the network perimeter, making it much harder for anyone to approach our critical infrastructure without being detected.Anyone trying to sneak into our network would trigger one of our traps long before reaching anything valuable. Now that the first phase was complete, the board of directors gathered for another meeting.Richard stood at the front of the conference room and addressed everyone."Over the past month, Langford Group has completed a major overhaul of its cybersecurity infrastructure," he announced. "We've successfully passed the regulatory review, our cl

Xavier had already arranged for officers to secure the perimeter of the abandoned data center by dawn the next morning.Federal regulators and police officers were stationed outside the building, covering the entrances and surrounding areas. They weren't there to investigate the servers themselves. Instead, their job was to make sure nobody could escape once we went inside.…Meanwhile, Dylan and I entered the building and headed down to the second basement level. The place looked exactly like an abandoned data center should. Dust covered the floor, old cables hung loosely from the ceiling, and rows of forgotten server racks stood in the darkness.Almost every device was covered in a thick layer of dust, except for one row at the very back of the room. Those devices were spotless.Someone had clearly been using them.As we approached the active equipment, I noticed something painted on the wall behind the servers. It was a black circle resembling the opening of a deep well.I

The first week of our security overhaul passed without another attack from Black Tide, but instead I grew even more uneasy instead of feeling relieved.Good hackers didn't simply disappear after losing once. They studied their mistakes, adjusted their methods, and waited for another opportunity.I wasn't about to give them one.As the person spearheading the overhaul, I instructed my team to deploy three different types of decoy systems across Langford Group's network. The first was positioned along the network perimeter, the second near our authentication services, and the third disguised as an ordinary internal application.None of these systems contained anything valuable, but each one carried a unique tracking marker. If a hacker interacted with any of them, we could identify their activity and trace the connection's origin.I assigned Ryan to monitor the alerts.A month ago, this guy couldn't even be bothered to take notes during meetings. Now, he was spending his nights gl

The board of directors gathered for another meeting the following morning, but the atmosphere in the room was completely different this time around. This time, there wasn't a single red warning on the large screen at the front of the conference room. Instead, the financial dashboard showed that all major systems were operating normally.Richard stood at the head of the conference table and briefed the directors on everything that had happened. The cyberattack had been traced to Black Tide, an overseas hacking organization, and Leon was now in custody. All five billion dollars in client assets had been unfrozen, the regulators had lifted their restrictions, and client confidence was finally beginning to recover. The board was visibly relieved by the time my father finished his announcement. The applause that followed sounded far more genuine than anything I'd heard the day before. Then came the floodgates of compliments.Apparently, I'd demonstrated remarkable composure under pre

Everyone in the server room heard the caller's words. My father turned toward me, his expression unreadable, but I could tell he was waiting for an explanation. The young man on the phone continued speaking as though he had all the time in the world."All that information you uncovered about those hacker groups three years ago? We planted it for you to find. You thought you were following the evidence straight to the truth, but all you were really doing was helping us test a few attack methods."He chuckled softly, clearly enjoying himself.I said nothing as I kept my attention on the hardware security module's recovery screen. The progress bar had reached 45%."Who are you?" I finally asked."I'm your shadow," he replied. "After you disappeared, I took over your old hacker alias. These days, half the people on the underground forums think the most dangerous white-hat hacker out there is still you."Dylan clenched his fists as he listened."He's just stalling," he muttered. "H

  • The Family's Biggest Mistake   Chapter 7 The Hidden Backdoor

I pulled up the system architecture diagram again and carefully went through every component we'd investigated so far. We'd already checked the perimeter firewall, security gateway, threat detection system, payment gateway, and authentication services. To me, I was seeing signs of an all-clear, but the system was still locked.I moved my eyes farther down the diagram until something finally caught my attention. It was the log collection service, the one component nobody had thought to question because it wasn't supposed to have anything to do with authorization.I stared at it for a moment before saying hesitantly, "I think I've found the real backdoor. It's hidden in the logging system."Dylan blinked in surprise. "The logging service? But all it does is collect system records.""Exactly, and that's why nobody thought to check it."I connected to the log collection server and began examining its configuration files. After I sifted through the directories, I discovered an encryp
