Chapter 4

Author: Flowering Tree
When I arrived at the bar, it was already 1:00 am. Everyone was at the door to welcome me.

My best friend, Samara Sheridan, rushed over and hugged me tightly. "Bebe, we've heard all about it. Zachary is such a bastard! How dare he do that to you?"

"I've already told my dad. The Jackson family is pulling out too. We'll teach him a good lesson for messing with our darling Phoebe!"

"The Leigh family is pulling out too."

"So is the Urwin family."

My friends all chimed in to show support for me.

My eyes turned slightly red as a year's worth of pent-up grievances poured forth like a broken dam. These people had watched me risk my life for Zachary. That was why when they learned the truth, they were even more indignant than I was.

I hastily wiped away my tears and entered the venue with hugs from everyone. "No more crying! Tonight is my singles party. We should all enjoy ourselves!"

Inside the bar, glasses clinked as bodies swayed to the music on the dance floor.

Suddenly, a group of men kicked the door open. Zachary's friends stormed in.

"You sure seem to be having a great time, Phoebe," one of them jeered. He looked at me scornfully with his hands on his hips as he said arrogantly, "You won't get to enjoy yourself much longer. Zachary is on his way."

Instead of getting angry at him, I laughed out loud. "Zachary? Isn't he dead?"

My friends snickered too. "Yeah. Isn't he six feet under now?"

They wanted to say more, but I deliberately sighed like I had put the past behind me.

I said serenely, "The dead can't come back to life. I've already moved on. I hope you all can move on too. Why don't you join us? Maybe it'll help heal the psychological trauma."

I turned around and wrapped my arms around my friends. We headed back to the dance floor to party wildly.

Behind me, a woman's furious scream rang out. "Cut your act, Phoebe! You saw Zachary, didn't you?"

Lola stood at the door, glaring at me hatefully. There was a bandage on her forehead. It seemed the impact from the crash earlier was quite strong.

"And to think that you even pulled out the investment! How could you do this to the Gray family when they're in such a difficult position?" Lola screeched.

The moment she said that, I understood that these people had come to demand the funds that I had cut off.

Looking past them, I saw a familiar figure. In the shadowy hallway, Zachary was leaning against the wall with the bill of his cap pulled low, revealing only half of his face. So, he had been here all along. Yet, he didn't dare to come forward and appear before me.

I looked down at Lola condescendingly. "So what if I pulled out? What does it have to do with you? Who are you to yell at me here?"

Lola's face flushed red upon being reprimanded. She pointed a trembling finger at me and shrieked, "Of course, it concerns me! If Zach finds out what you did, he'll be so heartbroken. And if he's heartbroken, I'd be heartbroken for him too!"

I sneered, "Drop the act. You're just worried that you won't get that money when you become the future Mrs. Gray."

At those words, my friends shot probing gazes at Lola.

She shook with rage. "You're spouting nonsense! There's… There's nothing going on between me and Zach. I'm just worried about him."

I raised my glass and shook my head helplessly. "What's the point of worrying for a dead man?"

I swirled the wine in my glass and downed it in one gulp.

Turning my head, I snaked an arm around a handsome man's neck and lifted his chin with my finger flirtatiously. "Let's go, handsome. Let's get back to having fun."

Just as I turned around, Zachary, who had been leaning against the wall in silence, finally couldn't hold back anymore. He rushed over and forcefully yanked my hand away from the man. His words were cutting and fierce as he exclaimed, "I'm not dead yet, Phoebe!"

When I returned from my vacation, the airport was filled with members of the Gray family. They had me surrounded in a tight circle, and Rosa even clutched at the hem of my pants. They said Zachary had been kidnapped. The reason was that he had seen the photo of me kissing Seth on social media and lost his mind. In a fit of rage, he stormed out of a meeting and bought a plane ticket to go to where I was. But after it took off, it never landed.Rosa cried so hard that she had to gasp for air as she clung to my pants."I know we have wronged you, but can't you please help us look for him? We don't have a penny left. We really have no other way. Bebe, I'm begging you—even if it's just for the sake of the years of friendship between our families!" Rosa wailed pitifully.I sighed and agreed.Seth gently pinched my waist and asked in a slightly jealous tone, "Do you still care about him?"I smiled helplessly. "I just want to hurry home and take care of the real business with you."With

In the days that followed, I rarely saw Zachary again. He was occupied with putting out fires back at his company. After the Klein family withdrew their investment, the other families close to us also pulled out theirs. I had thought my friends were joking. After all, business was business, and friendship was friendship. But unexpectedly, they really did cut off their investments. The Gray family's assets shrank by 80% overnight, and the group teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. Rosa came to beg countless times. But before she even got close to the gate, our butler threw her out.Zachary went from a rich young heir to a mere business owner of a waning company who had to humble himself to survive. While I vacationed in Breen Island, my friends often sent me videos of him in our group chat.In them, he poured drinks for others in a hotel, humbly and pitifully. Then, he kept gulping down glass after glass himself. His expression showed how much agony he was in, but he couldn't stop.

When I heard the reproach and grievance in his voice, I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow."What are you doing at my doorstep?" I asked. He jogged over, but the moment he saw the man in the car, his breathing hitched. His gaze shifted back to me. When he saw the oversized white shirt I was wearing, his lips turned pale."You… You… Phoebe, you're a real piece of work! I waited for you downstairs all night, and you were busy sleeping with another man!"Zachary's eyes were bloodshot, and the veins on his forehead throbbed. He looked like he was about to cry from rage.My stomach churned as the drunken nausea from last night resurfaced. I looked at him coldly. "Does it have anything to do with you?"His eyes grew redder, and his voice trembled violently. "So what I said was true, wasn't it? Phoebe… You… You've really disappointed me!"Disappointed him? Zachary was really good at twisting things around.I wanted to get someone to drive him away. But now, I realized I needed to make

That night went on until it was very late. Samara supported my drunken self as we walked out.The moment Zachary saw us, he approached me again. Even though I was drunk, I slapped his hand away with precision. "Samara, get us an Uber…"Before I could finish, Samara shouted, "Seth, over here!"I rubbed my eyes and saw a pair of long legs stepping out of a black SUV. A pair of refined red-soled shoes stepped right into a puddle. The man held an umbrella as he slowly walked toward us. Under the moonlight, his striking side profile looked extraordinarily handsome. I was instantly stunned. When Samara saw my dazed expression, she smirked smugly. "What do you think? My brother's not bad, right?""Yeah, not bad at all," I replied absentmindedly.Samara shoved me straight into her brother's arms and ran to her car. "I've got another event to attend! I'm leaving Phoebe to you!"As he and I made eye contact, an awkward air filled our surroundings.Suddenly, Zachary yanked me into his

Zachary stared at me coldly. He said dismissively, "It was just a kiss. That's normal in the adult world, isn't it? I don't know how much you saw on the day of the funeral, but I was heartbroken at that time. Lola just wanted to comfort me. She may have gone a little overboard doing it. Do you have to be so petty?"Before I could speak, Samara immediately pulled out her phone and cast the video onto the LED screen where a dance performance had been playing."You just don't know when to stop, huh? You may have smashed Bebe's phone, but I have your wonderful acts on mine!"On the screen, the photos from the anonymous letters played one by one. There Zachary was, watching the sunset with Lola by Svenza River. Next, he was riding a hot air balloon with her in Torlund. There was one of him pressing against her by a windowsill, and there was another of their fingers tightly interlocked on wrinkled sheets.Although the faces were not clear in the photos, the silhouette was unmistakabl

Zachary glared at me with reddened eyes. He clenched his fists even tighter when he saw the lipstick mark on the man's collar. He scolded me furiously, "My funeral was just yesterday! It's only been a day, and you couldn't wait to find a new lover, huh? Do you know how much effort it took for me to escape from those kidnappers? The moment I gained my freedom, I came back to you. Little did I know you'd have such a surprise in store for me!"Looking at his aggressive and righteous stance, I found him ridiculous. Even now, he thought he had me fooled.I held my wine glass without saying a word and quietly watched as he put on his performance. Perhaps the icy look and contempt in my eyes further enraged him. The next moment, he smashed my wine glass to the ground. His physical outburst ticked my friends off.Samara charged forward and shoved him hard, shouting at him angrily, "That's enough, Zachary. Everyone knows about your fake death!""Yeah! You faked your death just to fool aro
