Chapter 3

Author: Deepwood
The next morning, Madison showed up at my door.

I was still living in the house we set up as our newlyweds' home five years ago. Everything was frozen in time, exactly as she had left it.

The bright "just married" wedding cutout on the wall, which I had held her in my arms to stick up, had long since turned yellow and faded. The flowers we planted together were still on the balcony, and her rescued little turtle was still swimming in the corner tank.

This place used to be filled with laughter. Now, everything has changed.

She looked around the room, a flicker of pity crossing her eyes.

"I know these past few years have been hard on you. I'll compensate you for it. But on the condition that you drop this whole thing and keep treating Clyde as your brother."

I stared at her in disbelief. Whatever tiny spark of feeling I had left for her fizzled out.

"All of you treated me like a complete idiot. Do you have any idea how I survived these five years?"

I worked under the scorching sun, passing out from heatstroke multiple times, but I never dared to rest. I was terrified of what would happen if I stopped moving.

Once, loan sharks even kidnapped me to sell me off on the black market for my debts. I escaped with injuries all over my body, crawled to Madison's grave, and swore to make the people who hurt me pay.

In my dreams, she had held me gently, telling me not to be scared and that it would all pass.

Maybe a shred of guilt finally hit her. Madison sighed, stepped forward to take my hand, her tone softening.

"Dean, don't be greedy. I can't divorce Clyde. But if you ever need anything, call me."

I looked blankly at this woman I once loved so deeply, now a stranger.

My mind suddenly drifted back to the year Clyde was in the hospital. A nurse on duty had privately asked me about his status. Thinking she was a great catch, I asked Clyde what he thought.

Madison, who was always gentle, threw a massive temper tantrum back then. "Clyde needs to make these decisions himself! You can't just run his life because you're his brother!"

She apologized to me afterward, but she used work as an excuse and didn't come home for an entire month.

I pulled my lips into a bitter smile.

So she had just been hiding her own selfish desires all along.

"Sleeping with my brother behind my back, having his kid... was it thrilling? Don't either of you feel ashamed?"

Right then, Clyde ran in from outside.

"Dean, it's all my fault. Five years ago, on the day of the crash, Madison was carrying your baby. But she said she hadn't signed the marriage papers with you yet, so the baby had no legal standing. She said she only wanted to have my children, so she got an abortion.

"The pregnancy was too far along, so it wasn't an easy procedure. I know it was wrong and that I messed up. If you want, I'm willing to give you my baby in the future to make it up to you..."

Joy lit up Madison’s eyes. She squeezed my hand tightly, her voice trembling as she urgently promised, "Don't worry, Dean. I won't let you go again."I didn't say a word. I just looked down at her hands wrapping tightly around mine, letting out a smile. Our wedding was set for early May, as Madison said the weather would be perfect then.We booked the best hotel in the city, reserving the entire top-floor ballroom. We invited every single friend, relative, classmate, and colleague we had ever known growing up. Not a single person was left off the list.Madison even hired a top-tier wedding planner, determined to throw me the grandest, most flawless wedding imaginable. When I asked her why she was being so obsessive about it, she held me close, her expression solemn. After a long silence, she whispered, "I lost you once before. I won't lose you again.""You won't," I answered her softly. "People who truly love each other will always find their way back together. Only the heartless

"Not entirely," Madison explained."The moment I saw him lying there covered in blood, I realized I'd never truly stopped loving him. Maybe you were right all along, and that these past five years were nothing more than me taking pity on you."I used to think that was love. But I know now that the only person I’ve ever loved is Dean."I’m not keeping this baby, either. I’ve already talked to Mom about it, and she supports my decision."Clyde’s voice suddenly rose. "What the hell do you mean by that?! What if I refuse to get a divorce?!"Then, his voice softened once more. "Madison, what if I walk into that ward right now and tell my brother everything that happened between us? Do you think he’d still make the same choice he did in the past?""Don't you dare!"Madison’s tone turned cold, laced with a sharp threat. "You know damn well why I ended up with you in the first place. You dressed up to look like Dean, took advantage of me while I was drunk, and slept with me."Then you

After a while, a woman with red, swollen eyes walked into the room and introduced herself to me as my mother. She treated me just as well as Madison did, but the look in her eyes was identical to Madison's. It made me feel as if they were keeping something from me.That day, Madison went to a nearby supermarket to buy me some fruit. So I wandered out into the hallway for a slow walk by myself and bumped right into a man who looked identical to me.He was slightly thinner, paler, and lankier than me, looking fragile enough to be blown away in the wind.I remembered my mother mentioning that I had a brother called Clyde. Testing the waters, I called out softly to him. "Clyde?"He froze, his eyes flickering with a complex storm of emotions. There was surprise, suspicion, and even a trace of cold hostility—everything except joy.Guessing that our relationship probably wasn't great, I took a silent step backward. His expression flipped instantly. Putting on a thoughtful smile, he

The moment I opened my eyes, I felt like I had woken up from a long dream and couldn't even tell it from reality. The sharp stench of disinfectant made me frown slightly. All I noticed were the sterile white walls of a hospital room.I could hear doctors whispering nearby."He's lucky to be alive after getting hit by a heavy chandelier like that. Still, he's going to be bedridden for a very long time.""That woman by his side is his wife, right? She's been by his side day and night. Even when she knows he's in a coma and can't feel a thing, she still refuses to leave.""It's been a long time since I've seen a couple with a love like theirs. It's really touching..."My brain was sluggish, completely unable to process what their words meant. The privacy curtain was pulled back. Seeing that I was awake, the doctor raised his eyebrows in surprise."You're finally awake after a month! Hold tight, I'll call your family. Your wife just went downstairs to grab some food."My memories

"No!"The rush of air from the falling chandelier drowned out everything. Through the chaos, I thought I heard someone screaming my name.I forced my eyes open, only to see Madison’s face. The moment her gaze landed on me, her eyes widened in complete horror, her voice pitching up into a blood-curdling shriek."Dean!"I opened my mouth to say something, but it was already too late. The heavy chandelier crashed down on my body. A crushing weight hit me, knocking the air from my lungs and crushing my organs. The pain was so extreme that I couldn't even squeeze out a single sound. In that fleeting second, my mind went completely blank. I stared up at the ceiling, my pupils slowly dilating. For the first time in five long years, my mind was entirely at peace.I whispered to myself, "Dean, you're finally free. You don't have to be heartbroken over anyone or anything ever again. They can never hurt you anymore."Memories began to flash past like a projection reel. I remembered th
