Chapter 4

Penulis: Tubbs
On the day Tamara and I went to register our marriage certificates, she wore my favorite white dress.

I'd picked it out when I accompanied her to try on wedding gowns.

She smiled as soon as she saw me and asked, "Well? Do I look younger in this dress like my husband said?"

She handed me a cup of yogurt.

It was unsweetened and wasn't in the cherry flavor that I disliked.

"Once we're done with registration and head home, you can punish me however you like. Hugs or kisses—take your pick."

Melody and Derek arrived as well, the latter automatically setting his phone to silent mode.

I figured I'd trust them one last time.

When there were only four more numbers to be called ahead of ours, Tamara's phone rang with a call from Ian.

She didn't pick up.

After he called a second time, then a third time, she finally stood up and walked aside.

When she returned, she was no longer smiling.

"I'm going out for a bit," she said.

I asked, "Where to?"

"He went to Jane's house to pick up his things, only to run into her and her new husband. He's now drinking his sorrows away in the hallway."

Melody stood up immediately and said, "I'll go."

Derek got to his feet as well.

Tamara, who had already picked up her car keys, replied, "He doesn't listen to you two."

I gazed at her and said, "There are only four more numbers ahead of ours."

She placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know. 20 minutes is all I need. I'll be back as soon as I get him into a cab."

"Tamara Jackson."

"Hm?"

"We're registering our marriage certificates today."

There was a flicker in her eyes, but she still smiled and said, "It's precisely because we're doing it today that I have to settle this quickly. He'll keep making a scene otherwise."

She pinched my face and added, "Wait for me. I'm marrying you today no matter what."

Then, she left.

When the city hall employee called out our names for the first time, I told her, "Tamara will be here soon."

The second time we failed to respond to the call, our queue number was considered null and void.

Derek said grimly, "Let's get another number. She'll definitely make it."

So, I queued up again.

The second time our number was close to being called, I phoned Tamara.

It took a long time for her to pick up, and when she finally did, I could still hear crying in the background.

I asked, "Are you back yet?"

After a couple of seconds of silence, she replied, "I might not make it today."

"Weren't you just going to escort him into the cab?"

"What if something happens to him if I leave him in this state?"

"What about me?"

She finally grew annoyed at my questioning and retorted, "What could possibly happen to you from sitting in the city hall?"

The air seemed to still for an instant, and even Melody's expression turned severe.

Tamara quickly corrected herself. "Shane, I didn't mean what you think."

I said nothing.

She sighed and softened her tone. "Alright. It was my bad. It won't hurt to pick up our marriage certificates a day later, so let's go back tomorrow, alright? Don't be so rigid. It's not as if you're going anywhere."

She only came home at 10:00 pm, holding a jar of candied nuts.

I was sitting in the living room, waiting for her.

The moment she walked in, she crouched to take off my shoes.

"Your feet must be swollen from standing all day," she said.

I retracted my feet.

She looked up and smiled exasperatedly. "I'm back, aren't I? What more could you want? Our marriage certificates aren't going to expire just because we're a day late."

I gazed silently at her.

She remembered that my feet were prone to aching, that I disliked cherry-flavored yogurt, and which brand of candied nuts I liked. However, she somehow forgot that I'd been waiting in the city hall that day for the sake of marrying her.

I took off my engagement ring and placed it in her palm.

"The wedding's off," I declared.

She glanced down at me, still smiling, and said, "Don't try to scare me with this tactic."

In response, I pushed her suitcase out through the front door.

The red tag we hung from it to represent our love swayed along with it. I took it off and tossed it into the suitcase.

"We don't have to pick up our certificates anymore either."

Her smile finally faded.

I walked up to the electronic door lock and deleted her fingerprints from the system.

A drawn-out beep notified me that the deletion had been successful.

Tamara grabbed my hand and asked disbelievingly, "Shane Shea, are you seriously going through with this?"

I pulled my hand out of her grasp and replied, "It's not just because of today but every incident before this."

As the door slowly closed on her, she abruptly reached out to hold it open.

I heard genuine panic in her voice for the first time.

"Shane! Don't close the door!"

Six months later, I finished renovating the house. The designer asked, "Are we still sticking with the wedding home theme?"I replied, "No."I tested the master bedroom mattress and picked out the curtain colors myself.I didn't have to set any space aside on the shoe rack for women's shoes, and I didn't have to buy a dining table large enough for six people.Since I lived alone, there was no need to deliberately set things up to look like there would be people coming home at any time.Ian later left the city but not before sending me a very long text.It started off with, "Shane, considering how close we were as children, I always thought that you wouldn't mind me borrowing some of your things."I didn't read the rest of the message. In the end, he still didn't fully understand that while items could be borrowed or lent out, the same could not be said for one's place in other people's hearts.Melody would occasionally ask me if I'd be back for dinner.Once, she sent me a me

On the day originally set aside for the wedding, I invited a few colleagues over for a barbecue party.Melody didn't show up, and neither did Derek.I hadn't invited them.I'd already taken the wedding garlands off the walls.I also hung up a picture of the sea I'd taken during vacation on the wall where the wedding portrait was supposed to go.My colleagues raised their glasses in cheer. "Happy housewarming, Shane!"I smiled and clinked glasses with them. "Thank you."Just then, the doorbell rang.I assumed it was our takeout that had arrived, but I opened the door to the sight of Tamara. She was wearing a white mermaid gown.I'd helped her pick it out half a year ago after she'd tried on various dresses. She'd complained that it was too tight around the waist, upon which I jokingly told her, "Is getting married to me that miserable an affair to you?"She tilted her head back to kiss me and replied, "I'd willingly let the dress crush my bones if it meant I got to marry you

Two days after my visit to Melody's house, Derek came looking for me.He stood in the doorway with two bottles of wine in hand."Ten minutes. Just give me ten minutes of your time. I'll leave after I've said my piece," he said.I let him inside. He handed me the bottles, saying, "These used to be your favorite."I took a sip, but the flavor was too rich for me."I no longer drink this," I told him.He stiffened. "When did your tastes change?""After I graduated from university," I replied. His smile gradually faded away. For the past few years, he'd kept in mind which songs Ian couldn't bear listening to after his breakup and the fact that Ian needed to drink some warm milk before bed. He also knew that Ian's favorite curtain color was light blue.Yet, he didn't know that I hadn't enjoyed cider for a long time.He lowered his head and toyed with his glass. "I've been doing some thinking recently. Where did I get the nerve to suggest that Ian should stay in your marital home

Melody fixed up the wall. She dug up all my childhood photos and redrew every height marker covered by white paint by referring to their positions in the photos. She sent me a photo over the weekend alongside a message that read, "I didn't dare try to replicate Dad's handwriting."I gazed at the photo for a long time before replying with a simple okay. That night, she sent me another message. "I found the enamel bowl that Dad used to use."I eventually decided to go back for a visit. My room looked much like how it used to be, and Ian's belongings had been cleared out.The bedsheets had been swapped back, and my photo album was back on the desk.A series of newly drawn pencil marks were lined up neatly on the wall, but somehow, it looked even more artificial than before.Melody, who was standing behind me, asked tentatively, "Does it still look like it used to?"I didn't reply. She was the first to hang her head and say, "I know it doesn't."There was a pot of chicken noodl

After moving into Tamara's and my wedding home, Ian complained that the master bedroom's mattress was too firm, so he'd had Tamara pick out the current one with him. She'd paid for it.I returned the mattress to the store and instructed them to refund the money through the original payment method, so Tamara quickly caught wind of it.Sure enough, she showed up while I was out shopping for a new mattress.Just as I was testing out a second mattress, her voice rang out from behind me. "Don't recommend a mattress that's too soft for him."The salesperson turned around.Tamara walked over and pressed down on the mattress with her palm."He has a bad back, so if it's too soft, he won't be able to get up the next day," she explained. The salesperson smiled and said, "You understand him quite well, ma'am."She smiled instinctively and replied, "We've been together for eight years."She froze up as soon as the words left her mouth.I stood up and said, "I'll take this one."Tamara

Tamara waited outside my house for an entire night. She was still knocking on the door at 2:00 am.Once in a while, she would call out something through the door."Open up for a bit. I won't go in. I just want to say a few things."You have a weak stomach, so don't go to bed on an empty stomach."I placed the candied nuts by the door. Remember not to eat them once they've gone past the expiration date."She finally stopped pounding on the door by 4:00 am, but she sent me a message instead."Alright. Throw your tantrum. Call off the wedding if you like. We'll just host it again once you've calmed down."I stared at her message for a long time.Even now, she was under the impression that I was just throwing a fit.The next morning, I canceled the reservations for our wedding ceremony, honeymoon hotel stay, and photography session.Tamara rushed to find me at the entrance of my company building at noon. Her eyes were bloodshot, but the first thing she asked me was, "Have you e
