Chapter 3

Author: Winter Fog
The whole family was startled by her sudden outburst.

Roger and Amelia frowned in displeasure.

"Summer, you've always been the calm one. What's gotten into you? It's Aster's birthday. Don't let that disgrace of a son ruin the mood!“

Summer didn't reply, stumbling out of the living room as she hurriedly tried to call Charles, but no one answered.

The ringtone rang out again and again in the cold, empty cave.

-

As if summoned by an unknown force, my spirit suddenly and uncontrollably teleported to Summer's side, and I watched her mumble anxiously into the phone.

"Pick up, Charles… Pick up!"

Something seemed to stir inside my empty chest, leaving behind a dull, aching bitterness.

Summer... so you could get worried, after all?

She called for half an hour, but no one answered.

Summer irritably rubbed her temples as the panic in her heart continued to grow.

After all, I had always answered her calls instantly.

Unless... something had happened to me.

"N-No, that's impossible. I left behind supplies for him, and he was still in the mood to frame Aster just now… How could anything have happened to him?"

Suddenly, the tension in her eyebrows eased.

As if something came to mind, she contacted a colleague stationed at the snowy mountain and asked her to go up and check on me.

Five hours later, her colleague called.

"That fiancé of yours is doing perfectly fine. It's as warm as can be in that cave."

Summer let out a cold laugh. "Think you could ignore my calls just to play the victim and target Aster, hmm?"

I laughed, too, though mine was a bitter laugh.

That colleague of hers had been pursuing Aster for three years, so how would she ever tell Summer the truth? Hell, she probably hadn't even gone up the mountain.

Finally able to relax, Summer fell asleep at three in the morning, only to wake up before the clock even struck six.

The house had a separate, antique-style kitchen built specifically for making the traditional desserts Aster loved.

Summer rolled up her sleeves and followed the instructions in the old recipe book, starting with lighting the fire.

She had never set foot in a kitchen in her entire life, much less worked with a traditional wood-burning stove like this one, so it took her more than an hour just to get the pot boiling.

Her face and clothes were covered in soot.

The white dress she was wearing was one I'd sewn by hand, stitch by stitch, staying up night after night for an entire month to make it as an engagement gift.

Now, it was dirty and torn.

I let out a soft sigh as I silently watched Summer knead the dough with utmost concentration.

Suddenly, I remembered the last time I had a fever and asked her to make me a bowl of porridge.

She had said, "Going into the kitchen's going to make me reek of grease and smoke! Do you think I'm some sort of housewife?

"Just order some takeout once the typhoon blows over!"

As it turned out, the kitchen wasn't off-limits for her at all. All that it took was enough love.

Before Aster woke up at nine, she'd finally finished a delicate plate of desserts for him.

After taking a shower, Summer looked at the torn white dress and casually tossed it into the trash.

Then she took out her phone, snapped a photo of the pastries, and sent it to me.

"Want some? I made them myself.

"The latest weather data just came in. The temperature around the snowy mountain is going to drop another five to six degrees.

"Reply to my message now and ask Aster for forgiveness properly, and I'll go get you immediately and let you have these desserts!"

I wanted to eat them, I really did.

But my corpse was already almost completely buried beneath the blizzard sweeping into the cave.

I hadn't eaten a single bit of food for ten whole hours before I died. Even now, as a soul without so much as a stomach or intestines, I still couldn't stop myself from drooling at the thought of food.

I was so hungry, and so very cold…

'Dad, Mom, Summer… your punishment hurts too much…'

Only a few seconds after the message was sent, my parents' terrified screams suddenly came from outside.

"Summer, come quick! This is bad!"

Roger and Amelia were baffled. "What do you mean, Summer? What does Aster have to do with all of this? Explain!"Aster swallowed nervously before hugging Summer's arm tightly."I get it—you're just too sad, aren't you? I'm sad about Charles' death too, but you can't just blame me for it! I've been with Mom and Dad this whole time, remember?"Summer violently shook him off, before bringing up the chat history between Aster and Tessa.Shown there were chat records between Aster and Tessa, stating as clear as day that he'd directed Tessa to swap out the supplies Summer had left for me with empty bags. And then, returning to the incident four years ago, where I had accidentally left Aster behind in a remote area and had caused him to suffer cold and hunger, Summer found the surveillance footage from the place where I had stopped the car.Sure enough, Aster had said something to me before I got out of the car. And while I was outside, he had secretly slipped away on his own. That was

The color drained rapidly from Roger and Amelia's faces.Amelia once again thrust her sharp fingernails at the screen, trying to find a flaw in my act, just as she had last night.Roger even fetched a magnifying glass and examined me from every angle. But there was nothing. Not a single flaw.I really was dead.I died last night, at the very moment they warmly celebrated Aster's birthday.Did they even remember that last night was my birthday, too?Yet my stomach had held not only no cake, but not even the tiniest morsel of food.Hungry, with an empty stomach, I had frozen to death all alone in a mountain cave amid the snow and ice.The suffering I endured must have been worse than what Aster had gone through that rainy night, right?Dad, Mom, Summer…Congratulations.I suffered from the cold and starved, just like you wished."This is impossible…"Roger and Amelia stood there in a daze, their eyes reddening and their lips trembling uncontrollably. But apart from those w

They had arrived at the snowy mountain.Summer pulled on her thermal gear and made her way to the cave without saying a word. The moment the people gathered at the entrance saw her, their eyes lit up."Chief, you're finally here!"Summer looked at those who stood, those who sat, and those who were panting from exertion, from person to person. After looking at everyone, it was clear I wasn't there, and Summer paled considerably.Tessa hurried over and led her to where I lay, but Summer had already closed her eyes, her head hanging low.I smiled.'You already knew it wasn't some ruse, didn't you?'During our video call, frostbite could be faked. But the details of the corpse in the photo Tessa had sent you? There was no way anyone could have faked them so convincingly.'I'm dead, Summer. You're already here, so why don't you open your eyes?'Tessa sighed, and it was only after a while of waiting that she couldn't help but urge her on."Chief, the temperature is about to reac

Summer drove at breakneck speed, running three red lights in a row. But an accident up ahead left traffic backed up at the highway entrance, trapping her in the congestion. Her colleague called once more. "How much longer until you get here, Chief? Our team is still up on the mountain waiting for you to come and retrieve the body yourself."Hearing this, Summer's tense body actually relaxed a little."I already know you're working with Charles to trick me, Tessa. Tell him I'm on my way, and that I'm almost there. No need to lie any longer."There was a pregnant silence on the other end. After several audible swallows, Tessa finally spoke cautiously."Chief, I know this is hard for you to accept, but the weather is fluctuating drastically, and staying up on the mountain is dangerous, so please hurry. Otherwise, I'll have no choice but to tell them to carry Mr. Rivers' body down themselves."Summer smirked. "Fine, continue your little act, but can't you make up better lies?"Why

That sentence...I'd waited six years to hear it, to the point where it had become an obsession. The first year, our wedding was called off because Aster kept pestering Summer to help him prepare for his college entrance exams, and Summer simply didn't have the time. The second year, Summer left me alone at the bridal shop. I waited until nightfall, but she never came. That day, Summer had been pretending to be Aster's girlfriend for a day, trying to discourage the girls who wanted to pursue him.In the end, I wandered into an alley and was sexually assaulted by a bunch of perverted older women. With the last of my strength, I called Summer, but she didn't answer.Instead, she was out drinking with Aster, trying to see how much alcohol it would take for him to get drunk."This way, my innocent little Aster will know his limits, and won't let some bad woman take advantage of him!"…By the time everything was over, the sky had begun to lighten, and the women left the scene one

The person on the phone practically shouted the words. His voice echoed clearly throughout the living room. Then came a suffocating silence, so quiet that the sound of Summer struggling to swallow could be heard clearly. "W-What did you say?""I said we found a male body in the cave, and it looks like your boyfriend Charles!"Summer's entire body started trembling, muttering to herself, "T-That's… that's impossible…"Amelia and Roger stared blankly at each other, seeing the helplessness and panic in each other's eyes.Amelia was the first to recover, grabbing Summer's arm and shaking her repeatedly, her eyes instantly reddening."What's going on, Summer? Didn't you say that he'd have enough supplies to survive? Why did they say that they found Charles' body?!"Summer ran a hand through her hair, her face deathly pale, as though her very soul had been ripped away."I don't know…"Roger was relatively calm, only taking a moment to recollect himself and regain the calm authority
