LOGINI caught the evil grin stretching across Jimmy’s face. I knew why he was smiling, and I hated it.
Why, oh why, can’t I ever keep my mouth shut?
I couldn’t concentrate for the rest of the lecture. My head was filled with one thing: a swimming competition. The bell finally rang, saving me from my fake note-taking.
I did what I had in mind. I grabbed Jimmy’s wrist and dragged him out of the lecture hall, ignoring the surprised looks people threw our way. Let them stare. I had bigger things to worry about.
“Hey… smallie,” Jimmy muttered, half amused. “What are you up to this time?”
I glanced around, making sure no one was nearby, then leaned closer.
“I’m doomed,” I whispered. “If I participate in that competition, our little secret is out.”
I chewed my nails, stomach growling like a wild beast. Great, on top of doom, I was starving. I reached into my pocket for money, but it was empty. Not a damn coin.
Turning back to face Jimmy, an idea hit me.
I pretended to stumble. Perfect timing, he caught me in his arms.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
I shook my head dramatically. “I feel weak. If I don’t eat something now, I might collapse. Right into your hands.”
Yes. I was doing it again.
Jimmy narrowed his eyes. “I swear, I’ll kick your ass if you don’t get up right now.”
“Fine!” I surrendered, hands raised. “But at least let’s grab something real quick. I’m broke.” I even pouted my lips for effect.
He sighed and started walking, success.
Minutes later, we were in the canteen.
I told myself to order decently. Something small, but my stomach had other plans. I devoured food like it was my last supper, forgetting who was sitting across from me.
Jimmy. The biggest boy in the building.
“For someone as petite as you,” Jimmy said, watching me eat, “you sure have a large appetite.”
I froze. I’d forgotten he was observing me the whole time.
“Oppaaaaa…no… unniiiiiii,” I squeaked. Trying to sound like those K-drama actresses calling their big brothers. But it came out wrong, really wrong, like a goat.
I wanted to sink under the table.
“You need to help me,” I pressed on, ignoring my humiliation. “I should’ve thought before opening my mouth, but you’ll help me, right?” I wobbled my head like an Indian actress, completely forgetting myself. Movies again, always movies.
Jimmy leaned back. “What will I get in return if I help you?”
“You pervert!” I snapped. “Get your eyes off my body! You can only smell it from afar, but you’ll never get a taste!”
The words flew out like a scene I’d memorized from TV. And just like that, embarrassment swallowed me whole.
Jimmy burst out laughing. “You’re clearly not my type, silly.”
Ouch. That stung.
“Fine,” I muttered. “Have you ever tasted my cupcake? No, but if you did, your stick would be as big as Dave’s, maybe even bigger, with round eggs.”
I cupped my hands in the air, mimicking eggs.
Oh, no.
Jimmy’s face was blank, clearly confused.
I slapped my hands over my mouth, shaking my head like crazy.
Now he’d think I’m the pervert.
“Fair enough,” he said at last, sparing me. “Here’s the plan: pretend to be very sick before the competition. That’ll get you out of it. I have somewhere to be. I’ll be back late. Be good.”
He dropped cash on the table and walked out.
I counted it. Enough for food, enough for a ride, sweet.
But then…
“You’re here? How could you eat lunch without your girlfriend? We could’ve had a date.”
Lilly.
Of course.
“Girlfriend?” I repeated, blinking.
“Yes, Idris.” She tossed her hair proudly. “I know you like me. So I thought, why stress you with asking me out? I’ll be your girlfriend. I am mad at you for not telling me you’re related to Jimmy, but I forgive you.”
This girl was a walking radio, no pause, no volume control.
“Lilly,” I said gently, “I appreciate you. But I can’t be in a relationship now. I need time to heal. My last relationship broke me. I gave her everything, designer bags, perfumes, even a car I spent millions on, only to catch her cheating with another man.”
I dabbed at my dry eyes for effect. Damn! I believed my own lies.
“Oh, Idris!” she gasped. “I’ll give you time to heal. I’ll always be here for you.”
And then, she kissed my cheek.
Before I could even react, she ran off.
What the hell was that?
Am I… still straight?
I grabbed my stuff to leave. But of course, the seat thief showed up.
This day just kept getting longer.
She smiled sweetly and placed a shopping bag on the table. “I know we started on the wrong note. I didn’t know Jimmy was your brother. So… peace offering.”
I straightened up, peeking inside. Designer perfume, shirts, look expensive. I composed myself, pretending not to care. Then peeked again. A note, with a love emoji. “Lisa.”
“Are you Lisa?” I asked.
She nodded shyly.
“I knew it!” I leaned closer, lowering my voice. “Can you keep a secret?”
She sealed her lips with her hand.
“Good. Jimmy has a huge crush on you. He’s been all over the moon about the name Lisa. He likes to take his time, you know.”
Her eyes widened.
“Aww!” she squealed, loud enough to draw attention. Then quickly covered her mouth. “Sorry, I’ve been in love with Jim forever! The first time I saw him in a business magazine was as the young CEO… I just…”
There she went. Eyes closed, planning her wedding already.
I grabbed the bag and escaped.
Back at our place. Yes, our. That word sounded divine.
I unpacked the bag: designer perfume (I knew the brand, I used to work at a perfume store), shirts. Another income source unlocked.
Time to shower, peel off this tape, and breathe.
Wrapped in a white towel, I thought about using my bathroom, but no. Jimmy’s was better. Larger tub, better vibe.
I filled the tub, sank in, and imagined champagne and a toast to life. Stayed there for almost an hour.
Finally done, I dried off and went to unlock the door…
Then I stopped
“Jimmy!! Where are you? I’m here!”
A woman’s voice.
No way.
I double-checked. The door was locked. Only Jimmy and I had keys, but she was inside.
“Are you bathing?”
Shit.
The voice was coming closer, and I was standing there in nothing but a towel.
Irish… you’re dead.
IRISH POV I didn’t stay to hear the rest of it. I went over to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. It has been one hell of a discovery. Mummy spent the best part of her life gambling and resenting Mr. Smith, who apparently is my father, while he spent his time mourning his dear loved one. How pathetic. I didn’t know how to feel about all of this. Finding out my father isn’t an asshole, and that he is one hell of a fine man, made me truly forgive my mum. I mean, the man is cute. I don’t know how to act around him. I have spent almost all my life resenting him as well for what his absence did to us. I took a bottle of water and turned to go. My heart almost dropped when I bumped into Diego standing right in the kitchen. “You scared me!” I held my chest. I wanted to ask him how he got here, but that would be a silly question. The mafia king appears anytime. “Sorry about that.” I was already taking the water when I noticed him staring at me intensely. “Nigga, I know my face is
IRISH POVGrandma immediately snatched my hand away from him like his touch alone could contaminate me.“Mum, is this you?” the man said, his voice shaking slightly. “I have looked for you everywhere.”Looking closer at him, my brain finally connected the dots. I met him at the resort, the man with the messed-up love story.“I heard about Lucy’s death,” he continued softly. “I am so sorry.”Grandma’s face changed instantly.“It is your entire family that is dead!” she snapped. “My daughter is well and alive, Smith. Now get your silly self out of here before I call the cops on you!”Smith, that name again. It rang louder this time.Didn’t Mum say something about Smith being our father?I slowly turned my head back to him, then to Grandma, and gasped. No way.No actual way.“Lucy is alive?” he asked, completely thrown off. “How? I saw her grave. I even got her flowers just last month when I went visiting.”Okay.Something is very wrong here.Very, very wrong.Because right now, this is
IRISH’s POV“You look pretty.”Jimmy said it so casually, like he wasn’t capable of ruining my entire emotional stability with just one sentence. He was leaning against the table, taking a lazy bite of an apple like he had no problems in this world. What do they say about apples again?Exactly, temptation. And this one?Walking, talking temptation with zero self-control.I rolled my eyes slightly, but inside? My stupid heart did one small flip.“I was able to get hold of the person who took the video of us,” he continued, tossing the apple up and catching it like a bored rich boy. “It was Lilly. Your jealous girlfriend.”He winked.I blinked. Then blinked again. That girl. That damn girl will never mind her business. If I still had my “Idris balls” on, I would have scratched her face without blinking.“Of course it’s Lilly,” I muttered. “That girl needs a full-time job.”Jimmy chuckled softly, clearly enjoying my irritation.I didn’t even bother responding again.Instead, I turned tow
IRISH’s POV“Are you okay? What happened?”The phone almost slipped from my hand, but Nicki was fast enough to catch it before it kissed the floor. She didn’t even wait. She started going through it immediately.“Damn!” she exclaimed. “How did they even get a video of this?”She kept scrolling, her face shifting between shock and amusement.“Just breathe, okay,” she added, patting my shoulder like I was about to faint. “You weren’t called a thief or a murderer. Just some homophobic maggots calling you out. It’s nothing serious. The heart knows what it wants. There is nothing wrong with being gay.”For a second… just one second… I had to pause and mentally check my body.Because what the actual fuck is she saying?I slowly turned my head to look at her.If confusion had a face, it would be mine.I shot her a look, what are you even saying right now’?She caught it instantly and mimicked zipping her mouth with an invisible key.Good. Because if she had said one more word, I might have s
IRISH’s POV“His name is not important. He is just a sperm donor. Mum, I really hope you change this time, not you trying to scheme your way into Diego’s heart. You won’t like the outcome.”I almost added that Diego was the kind of man who could slit someone’s throat without blinking, just to scare her straight, but that would be giving away information I wasn’t ready to explain. She held my hands like we were in some emotional Nollywood scene. If she weren’t my mum, I would have rolled my eyes so hard they’d fall out.“Diego, how did you meet him? He is such a nice, handsome man.”And there she goes again. Wiggling her brows like a teenager. This woman has no shame, but I dare not say that loud.“Mum,” I said slowly, already tired, “just forget about it. Just behave and forget about Smith. You will do that for us, right?”She nodded quickly, like a child being promised sweets, then pulled me into a tight hug. Then she whispered, “I think he likes you.”I pulled back immediately. “M
JIMMY“I’m not ready to talk about her. Don’t worry, you will get to know her at the right time. So, will you help me out or not?”She shrugged and rolled her eyes.“Fine. Coincidentally, someone I know is nursing a heartbreak. She wants to prove a point to her boyfriend that she has moved on. This can work. I will set up a date tomorrow. I will get going now. Kisses.”She was gone. Looking at the bottle of champagne I ordered earlier, my mind traveled wide. I don’t even know if all of this makes sense. Is she still with him because of the promise she made, or something else? I struggled with my hair. Love makes one do crazy things. The next day, Becky was the first person to call and inform me about my meet-up with the said girl. That was faster than I thought.Hours later, I was done having breakfast, had my shower, and returned to the same restaurant, but this time, waiting for someone else. She arrived almost immediately. From the pictures and descriptions my sister gave, she was t
IRISH’s POV“Now stop, Becky. I only placed my head on her…, I mean, his thighs. I had a headache, and he offered to help.”He was making things worse with his funny explanations. He was looking at me for help. I looked away; I’m not about to start a new chapter with a lie. I don’t even know what I
IRISH‘s POVI closed my eyes and opened them once more, and I was not dreaming. The person I was seeing was clearly Jimmy’s mum, Clara, and her driver, what is his name… Joshua. It was as if I was watching live porn.I quietly tiptoed back. They were so engrossed that they didn’t hear footsteps ap
JIMMY’S POVDaddy’s mistress. These two have to be kidding right now. Finally, the service was over, and I went straight to my dad.“Can I speak to you for some minutes in private, Dad?”“Sure, son.”Now far from people, I dropped it. “Just what are you thinking? Bringing your mistress to a family
IRISH POVWhat will I do now? I don’t want to take the risk of turning over. Just then, I saw Jimmy’s car parked close to the court. He got out, looking around. I didn’t need anybody to say anything. I ran straight and slipped inside his car. Of course, he saw me; he followed right after.“Drive… ju
