Neris's POV

"Again."

I say it to no one, because no one else is awake to hear it, and swing the training staff into empty air until my arms shake.

The equipment shed is unlocked this late, the way it always is, because nobody expects anyone stupid enough to be out here at two in the morning the night before an academy-wide match. I've been swinging for an hour. My knuckles are raw. My wolf paces under my skin like it already knows what tomorrow is going to ask of it.

"You can't win," I tell it.

  • The Girl the Alpha Academy Couldn't Break   Chapter 131_The Alpha Who Would Not Kneel

Neris's POV"Kneel."The word doesn't come through my ears. It lands inside my chest, right where Lucien's ash is splitting, and my legs answer before I can.My knees hit the stone of the war room steps. I grab the railing, but my hands are already sliding. From the courtyard below comes a sound I'll never forget, hundreds of bodies going down at once.Cassian drops to one knee in the doorway behind me, his sword clattering from his fingers, his jaw locked so hard the muscle jumps. Evren is beside him with both palms flat on the flagstones, shaking with the effort of not putting his forehead there too. Lucien has fallen to both knees with his eyes squeezed shut."Neris," Cassian grits out. "Don't let it..."In the meadow, the sixty four sleepwalkers kneel in perfect rows, hands on their thighs, faces serene. Hesper's river riders collapse around the water barrels like cut wheat. Petra is on her knees at the gate with her hands pressed over her ears.Neris. My wolf's voice is a thread.

  • The Girl the Alpha Academy Couldn't Break   CHAPTER 130_THE CHOICE TO BE BOUND

Neris's POV"Don't wake him."I say it to the empty corridor, standing in my doorway with blood drying on my wrists. Cassian is still asleep in his chair, head tipped against the wall, sword across his knees. He has no idea what is carved into the plaster behind me.I close the door softly and walk to Lucien's rooms in my bare feet, leaving small dark prints on the stone. He opens on the first knock. He hasn't slept either. One look at my hands and he steps aside without a word and starts filling a basin."Sit," he says."I need you to make me something.""Let me clean those first.""Lucien." He stops. "I need a seal. Something that limits whatever it's using to reach me. I don't care what it costs."He sets the cloth down very carefully. "Tell me what you saw."I tell him about the wall. Next time, I will choose who lives. He listens with his hands folded, the way he listens to everything, and when I finish he says nothing for a long moment."There's a ward in the guardian records,"

  • The Girl the Alpha Academy Couldn't Break   CHAPTER 129_THE WOLF BEHIND MY EYES

Neris's POV"You've been standing there for twenty minutes."Cassian's voice reaches me from very far away. My hands are locked around the basin's edge, my knuckles white, and the lantern has burned down to a stub. The light in the window has gone from gold to grey."I only just came up," I say."I knocked four times." He steps into the room slowly, the way you approach a horse that might bolt. "I came in when you didn't answer. You didn't blink, Neris. I waved my hand in front of your face."I look at the mirror. A tired girl looks back, mouth set in a flat line. She doesn't smile. I almost wish she would, so I'd know I wasn't imagining it."My reflection smiled at me," I say.He doesn't laugh. He doesn't tell me I'm exhausted. He crosses the room and takes my hands off the basin one finger at a time, and they ache where they've been gripping."We tell Lucien," he says.Lucien takes it the way he takes everything, with a notebook."Time, location, duration," he says, pen scratching.

  • The Girl the Alpha Academy Couldn't Break   Chapter 128_The Power That Was Never Mine

Neris's POV"Let go of it, Neris. Now. Or I'll do it for you."My wolf's voice is nothing like the warm, ancient presence I know. It rips through the fog like a blade, and the cold hand on my wrist tightens, patient and tender, as though the shadow has all the time in the world."Hold still, vessel."No.The word isn't mine. It tears out of my chest in my wolf's voice, vast and furious, and the hillside shatters around me like thrown glass. The grey fog howls. The shadow's grip peels away in strips. I fall backward through nothing, and somewhere very far away I hear a boy's voice call out in the dark, and then I slam into my own body so hard that my teeth click together."Neris! Neris!"Cassian's hands are around my face. Lucien's sand glass lies knocked over in the grass beside us, the last grains still trickling out. The sky has gone pale grey with dawn. I haven't breathed in what feels like hours, and I drag in a lungful of smoke and meadow air and start coughing."Four minutes and

Neris's POV"Not particularly."I say it to a seventeen-year-old boy lying in the grass with my sister's smile on his face, and my voice comes out steadier than my knees.Tam's head tilts. "That's rude. I came all this way.""You didn't come anywhere. You're sitting in a fortress a hundred miles from here, borrowing his mouth.""Borrowing." Selene's laugh slides out of his throat, low and amused. "Such a small word. They don't lend me anything, Neris. They hand it over. Look around."I don't need to. I can feel them at the edge of the firelight, dozens of silent figures with empty faces, and my wolf is pressed so hard against my ribs it hurts."Let them go.""I will. When you come to Kestrel Hold and ask me properly." Tam's eyes stay fixed above my shoulder. "Until then, they're mine for as long as I want them. Enjoy the quiet, sister."The smile drops off his face like a mask. His body goes limp under Lucien's knee, and all around us the watching figures lower their heads at once, as

  • The Girl the Alpha Academy Couldn't Break   Chapter 126_The Night of Empty Tents

Neris's POV"Count them again."Lucien doesn't look up from his tally sheet. We stand on the crest of the hill above the allied encampment, where two hundred and six tents spread across the meadow below the academy wall. Fifteen packs, forty cookfires, and a handful of river riders singing something off-key near the water barrels."I counted twice," I say. "Two hundred and six.""Count a third time. I want to know exactly what I'm looking at when it changes.""When, not if?""The arrow said has already been infiltrated. Not may be." He finally lifts his eyes. "Someone wants us to understand it's finished."Cassian climbs the slope behind us with a lantern, his jaw tight. "Petra's watchers are in place. Kira has the wagon lines. Hesper agreed to keep her riders sleeping in shifts.""Did she ask why?""She said she's been waiting for you to ask for something like this since the day you knelt in her reeds."I almost smile. Below us, the camp glows warm and ordinary. A woman laughs. A chi
