The air was thick with tension, a stale mixture of sweat, blood, and decay. The moon cast long shadows on the abandoned road, stretching across the asphalt like spectral fingers. The men standing before Steve Kane and Marcus were barely recognizable as the ruthless werewolves they once were. Now, they were gaunt, their bodies weakened, their eyes hollow from sickness and desperation.

Steve took them in—every trembling limb, every quivering breath, every subtle shift of weight as they clung to the last shreds of defiance. He should have felt something. Pity, maybe. A whisper of remorse. But all he felt was cold satisfaction.

They were filth. They had always been filth. And he had no regrets about what had been done to them.

The leader of the ragged group—if he could even still be called that—stepped forward, his breathing labored, his shoulders sagging under the weight of an invisible burden.

“We had a deal,” the man rasped, his voice as b

"The men are not going to be happy with cleaning up this mess, Alpha Kane," Marcus said as he covered his nose.Everywhere smelt repulsive due to the exploded entrails scattered around. Steve was just glad that the virus was ineffective and harmless in his pack.As of now, Emma was the most valuable asset he had on his side and he was not letting her go anywhere anytime soon."Well, they should be happy that we are not invaded by zombie werewolves, and that everyone is safe." Steve said in a dismissive manner. The smell was bad but he was not bothered by it."Do you think Sophia will send more of those things?" Emma asked."I do not think so but that does not mean we should not make our move," Steve replied. "What is the dragon up to?" He asked."Lady Long had been sleeping for quite sometimes now," Marcus reported. "It is quite surprising.""I would have been more surprised if she did not sleep," Emma said."Why do you think so?" Steve asked with genuine curiosity."Long is a magical

"you are not going to invite me him?" Sophia asked with a cold smile."Why the fuck are you here?" Steve demanded in a low voice."At least offer me a drink," Sophia replied. "We used to be friends, Steve.""Sophia, do not underestimate my patience. The only reason I have not reached into your chest to pull out your fucking heart is because you are the only person alive that know where Mason is. Do not tempt me." Steve said with a growl.Sophia's smile slowly disappeared and a her cold natural expression took over."You are not among friends, Sophia," Steve said.Emma silently watched from some feet away. Even from where she stood, she could feel Steve's rage."State your reasons for being here or get back in your car and drive back to wherever you came from," Steve said."So, it is true," Sophia said as she looked around her. "You somehow managed to to keep your pack safe from the Virus.""I care about my people, I can not say the same a good you," Steve replied.Sophia did not bothe

Emma saw no reason to keep asking questions from the dead because she knew the answers she wanted did not lie with them. She thanked them and turned away from them with only to see the confused expression written on Steve and his Beta's face."What is it?" She asked them."We did not understand the language you were speaking," Steve said."I was speaking English," Emma replied with a puzzled expression.Steve and Marcus looked at each other before looking back at Emma. "What we heard was not English, Emma, you were speaking a language that we had never heard before." Steve pressed.Emma wanted to argue but then she realized that Steve was right. In her ears, what she saying to the spirits sounded like English but what she was talking with was the language of the Dead.It was also another strange gift from her father's side of her weird family."I totally forgot that the dead do not speak the same language as the living," Emma mused thoughtfully. "I hope it was not to unsettling for y

Steve had no desire to visit the Sterling Creek cemetery. It was the last place he had ever thought he was going to visit. The Council Elders all took protection from Emma and reluctantly thanked her. Emma understood that they still saw her as an outsider."Do not take it off under any circumstances," She warned."How long would it keep them away?" The woman asked."As long as it is with you," Emma said."I think that you should all prepare for a funeral," Steve said. "Losing two council elders in one day is very informative.""And it will be even more difficult to elect new ones because Hawke and Minerva were almost irreplaceable," The Council woman lamented sadly.Steve was not really bothered by the whole political bullshit with the Council. His new priority was finding who was summoning ghost werewolves to kill him.He knew that he was going die one day but going by the hands of the dead was not the way that he wanted to go.Together with Emma and Marcus, Steve drove to the perman

"The same thing!" Marcus was angry as he spoke. "No DNA samples on the wounds."Someone was killing off the council elders and they needed to stopped. Steve had sent some of his best werewolves to the houses of the remaining Council Elders. He had heaved a sigh of relief when report had been sent back that they were still alive. When the autopsy results came back, it had revealed that Minerva had died few minutes after Hawke. These killers were hard at work."That means I was the first target but they had trouble finishing the job so they moved on to their next ones." Steve said.He was in the morgue with Emma and Marcus talking to the medical examiner about the cause of death of the deceased Council Elder."This is something I have not seen before," The M.E mused as looked down at the body. "Real wounds but no biological imprint.""Thank you for your time," Steve said to the medical examiner and turned to the door."What do we do Alpha Kane?" Marcus asked. "News travel very fast here

By the time the sun rose up, word had spread that Hawke had died in his cabin. The pack wanted to know how he had died but Steve had bade the Delta squad to keep it a secret. The pack was just record from a virus and there was chaos outside of Steering Creek. The news from the outside was getting worse as the days went by.Steve did not want to induce panic into the pack again. The autopsy results came back and Marcus was the most puzzled."Undetermined," The Beta said in disbelief. "There were claw marks on his body, clearly a werewolf did this!""Yeah, but there was no DNA of the marks that matched any living werewolves." Steve said."What about the other council elders?" Emma asked. "I felt a very dark magic from one of them when we talked. She seemed very angry when she spoke of you.""We should pay her a visit," Marcus said. However, his head moved sideways as if he was listening to a distant sound. He was having a mind link discussion with another werewolf."The guns have arriv

Emma meant it has a means of protection. Steve saw it has a gift. Emma had poured a a mixture of mountain ash and black salt into a small silver pendant and made it into a necklace for the Sterling Creek Alpha."It will stop the ghosts from getting close but they will still linger around you," Emma told him. Steve wore it around his neck and felt a small weight on his shoulders. "It feels a bit heavy," He said in a mild surprise. "It is a powerful spice, Steve and the energy it carries is what is weighing you down," Emma told him. "But it will keep you safe nonetheless.""So it is safe to go out now?" Steve asked. "Where do you want go?" Emma asked, confused. It was dark outside and daylight was still hours away.Steve closed his eyes and linked his mind with Marcus. As the Alpha of his pack, he had the ability to link his mind with any werewolf he chose. Besides, it was better than phone calls."What have you found?" Steve asked Marcus through his mind."It is like they do not eve

  • The Healer's Bond    147. THE DARK SIDE OF THE CREEK

It was a dangerous existence living as a werewolf in a pack. There was nothing safe or normal about it. Everyday was a battle for survival. Every waking moment was a fight for something. It could be a fight for respect, power or even for another werewolf. Death was a constant companion in the world of the wolfkind and it was closer than one imagined.Ironically, the werewolf that faced and looked death in the face throughout his existence was none other than the Alpha of a pack.It was such a tiring way to live but Steve saw how his insane father had embraced the bloodshed that surrounded him with cold and maniacal acceptances.Alexander Kane was always ready for a fight. It was like he expected it with his whole entire being. It was why he had survived for as long as he did.The sight of the ghostly werewolves stayed with Steve even after he had stopped seeing them. He not only saw them, he also felt their pain, their rage and their desires for his life."They are not going to find t

The moment Long stepped into the house and closed the door behind her, they spirit of the werewolves materialized again. Growling and prowling as they stalked all over the lawn. "They just keep coming back," Long complained bitterly and Emma knew that the dragon's ego was shot to hell because her fire could not solve what was happening. Emma watched with interested as the ghostly werewolves began to prowl up and down the front of the house. "There must be a way to stop them," Steve said angrily. "I am not going to be stuck in this house every night while the world burns." "They cannot be killed because they are already dead," Emma said. "You could have said something before I wasted my time and fire on them," Long complained softly. "You seemed like you were having fun," Emma said with a shrug. "There is nothing fun about fighting the dead,
