I felt the pull of that dark memory before I was fully immersed in it. It was as though someone had clawed into the deepest part of me and given it back for me to ingest again. To taste the bitterness again.

My breath hitched, and suddenly I wasn’t standing in the present anymore. The memory had swallowed me whole, dragging me back into the one moment I had tried all my life to bury.

The market smells were still fresh on me when I pushed open the door. Dried herbs, roasted meat, honeybread—it clung to my clothes. For a heartbeat, I thought I smelled lavender. Mother’s scent. But when my eyes adjusted to the dim light, everything in me froze.

She was there. Crumpled on the floor. Lifeless. A pool of red liquid spreading beneath her like a halo of ruin.

My throat went sore. “Mother?” My knees gave out before I reached her, my hands shaking as they touched her cheek.

Cold. Too cold.
