The front door opened before Sylvie even had time to compose her expression.

He stepped inside without hesitation.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in all black. His posture carried the precision of someone who had spent years training their body into a weapon. His expression was impossibly unreadable. Not a single flicker of emotion crossed his face as his gaze swept the room.

Ryan Finley.

Sylvie felt her breath hitch, but it wasn’t attraction. It was annoyance. It was as if his presence sucked the air out of the hallway.

Cole moved forward. "Ryan"

"Sir." Ryan gave a single clipped nod while he shook hands with him.

His voice was deep, calm, controlled. There was nothing warm in it.

Sylvie watched him openly, arms folded. He didn’t acknowledge her yet.

Instead, his eyes moved over the house. Not in admiration but in assessment, the way an engineer might assess a flawed structure.

Ryan stepped further in and the moment he did, something in the atmosphere shifted. He scanned the corners of the ceiling, the doors, the staircase, the windows.

Ryan’s tone remained flat. “Your perimeter lighting is insufficient between the garden walls. North gate sensors are delayed by 2.3 seconds. Also, I noticed while coming in that there’s a blind spot in the camera at the west side of the garage.”

Sylvie blinked. Her father blinked too. Ryan hadn’t even walked ten full steps inside.

"How..." Cole began.

"You hired me." Ryan replied simply. "This is what I do."

Sylvie muttered under her breath, "Well, hello to you too."

Ryan finally turned his head toward her. He have heard about her and he feels she is spoiled and reckless. His gaze locked onto hers, steady, unblinking. It felt like she was being X-rayed.

His eyes weren’t warm brown or soft hazel, they were cold, storm-gray. Quiet, intense, unreadable.

Sylvie lifted her chin. Ryan didn’t speak to her. Not at first. She hated him instantly.

Her father cleared his throat. "Ryan, this is my daughter, Sylvie."

Ryan remained perfectly still as he replied, "I know."

Sylvie scoffed. "Wow. Charming."

His expression didn’t move. "Your safety is my assignment."

“Assignment?” she repeated, bristling.

“Yes.”

The bluntness stunned her.

Cole exhaled. "Sylvie, Ryan will be staying in the east wing guest suite. He’ll begin full protection protocol tomorrow morning."

Ryan corrected him quietly. "Tonight."

Sylvie frowned. "Tonight? It’s past midnight. I’m not leaving the house."

Ryan didn’t look at her. "Threats don’t follow business hours."

Cole nodded, relieved someone else was taking control. "Good. Good."

Sylvie’s annoyance flared. "You know, most normal people say ‘nice to meet you."

Ryan glanced at her with the faintest trace of boredom. "If I wanted to exchange pleasantries, Miss Wilfred, I’d work at a hotel front desk."

Her mouth dropped for a second.

Cole stifled a cough, half shock, half approval.

Sylvie recovered quickly, eyes narrowing. "You seriously talk to clients like that?"

"Only the ones who think they don’t need protection."

Her pulse jumped.

She stepped closer. "You don’t even know me."

"I know enough." he replied.

His tone didn’t rise, didn’t soften. It simply existed like an immovable wall.

"Let me guess..." she shot back. "You read one report about me and now you think you understand everything?"

Ryan’s jaw ticked once. "Your behavior creates vulnerabilities. Recklessness attracts danger.

Cole stepped in quickly. "Ryan, Sylvie, I think that's enough for the night"

"No," Sylvie cut in. "Let him finish. Apparently my bodyguard has all the answers."

Ryan stared at her, utterly unaffected by her sarcasm.

"You don’t have to like what I say." he replied. "You just have to stay safe long enough for me to do my job."

Sylvie’s fingers curled into fists. She turned to her father. "You hired a robot."

"A highly efficient one." Ryan added without blinking.

"I wasn’t agreeing with you!" she snapped. Ryan ignored the outburst, turning slightly toward Cole again. "I’ll inspect the outdoor perimeter and her floor."

Sylvie’s eyebrows shot up. "My floor?"

"Yes"

"I didn’t ask for a shadow."

"I didn’t ask for an assignment who disobeys basic safety."

"Basic safety?" she echoed, voice rising. "You don’t even know me!"

Ryan stepped forward, just one step, but it was enough to make her heart kick. His voice dropped lower, colder.

"I don’t need to know you. I only need to protect you."

She hated the way he said it, It sounded so detached and clinical.

Cole rubbed his forehead. “Let him work, Sylvie.”

Ryan turned and walked toward the east wing without another word.

Sylvie glared at his back. Her voice carried across the hall.

"This isn’t over, you know!"

Ryan didn’t stop walking. The nerve of him, she thought.

"I will make you quit,"she yelled. "Before the week is over."

  • The Heiress Contract    Chapter 10: You're upset

The engagement dinner was still roaring behind her, music, chatter, clinking glasses but she felt she couldn't breathe. Not with Zade hovering. Not with her father watching her every expression. Not with the cameras freezing every fake smile on her face. She pushed past a pair of laughing guests and slipped through the tall glass doors that was leading to the balcony. Cold night air rushed over her skin like a blessing. She gripped the railing and inhaled hard, trying to steady the shaking in her hands and also trying to convince herself that she's doing this for the future of the Wilfred empire. She had smiled so much her cheeks hurt. She had stood so close to Zade she could smell the expensive cologne clinging to him like armor. She had played the role perfectly. But no one asked if she wanted any of this. Behind her, soft footsteps approached. She didn’t turn because shealready knew who it was. "Ryan." she said tiredly. "Miss Wilfred" His voice was quiet,

  • The Heiress Contract    Chapter 9: Engagement Party

Tonight was the official engagement dinner of Zade Russo and Sylvie Wilfred organized by Zade. The room glowed in gold. Chandeliers spilled warm light across marble floors, and a string quartet played softly near the stage. Not so many guests but a blend of elites, business partners, and the ever-hungry press filled the room. The cameras loved it. They loved her, the heiress with the striking eyes and the perfect, practiced smile. They loved him, the young mafia lord turned businessman, elegant in his tailored suit, hand resting lightly on her waist as if she belonged there. The media headlines had already begun circulating: THE UNION OF POWER. PERFECT MATCH: RUSSO & WILFRED. TWO EMPIRES, ONE FUTURE. Only Sylvie knew how false every caption was. She just couldn't wait to leave. Zade leaned toward her as they moved through the crowd. "Smile, dear. They’re watching." Sylvie forced one, though her cheeks felt stiff. "I am smiling." "Not with your eyes," he murmured,

Sylvie left her father’s office. One second she was staring at the contract papers that promised to steal two years of her life, and the next, her legs were moving on their own, carrying her out of the room, down the hallway, away from her father’s voice, away from Zade’s cold stare. Her vision blurred. Her chest felt tight. Her breath came shallow. By the time she reached the elevator lobby, tears were already sliding down her cheeks, hot, angry, disbelieving tears. She pressed her palms against the nearest wall and bent her head, swallowing a sob. How could he do this to me? How could my own father decide my future like a transaction? How could he offer me up? But deep down she kind of understood what was on ground. The elevator dinged softly behind her. And then... “Miss Wilfred” Ryan His voice steady and controlled as always, felt like a hand catching her before she could fall. She didn’t look at him. She didn’t want him to see her crying. But he saw. O

  • The Heiress Contract    Chapter 7: The Proposal

The following morning, the Wilfred mansion was unusually quiet. Sylvie barely slept. The image of Zade Russo’s smirk kept replaying in her mind, along with the words he left hanging in the hallway. There is a debt. And I always collect what I am owed. She couldn’t shake it off. She found Ryan waiting for her downstairs, already dressed in black, unreadable as always. "You’re up early" she muttered. "I didn’t sleep." he replied simply. Sylvie blinked. "At all?" "Didn’t need to." She rolled her eyes. "You’re not human." Ryan didn’t answer just opened the car door for her. His silence felt heavier today. Halfway through the drive, Sylvie’s phone buzzed. It was her father. Come to the office. Now. He sped toward Wilfred Corporation headquarters, never taking his eyes off the mirrors. --- Inside the building, employees whispered the moment Sylvie walked through the lobby. Ryan walked beside her, expression carved from stone, scanning every corner like he expec

  • The Heiress Contract    Chapter 6: Zade Russo

The Wilfred empire had seen powerful men walk through its doors, politicians, investors, industry giants but never anyone like Zade Russo. Sylvie didn’t know that yet. The rowdiness was much reduced compared to yesterday. But as she got to company, there were more guards than usual. The staff whispered in tight circles. The air itself felt heavier, like the walls were holding their breath. Ryan was standing in the lobby. "What’s going on?" she asked. Ryan didn’t answer right away. His jaw clenched, just once. "Your father is expecting a visitor." "Okay… and?" "And it’s someone important." The tone in his voice, flat but strained, made her stop. "Ryan," she pressed, "who exactly is coming?" Before Sylvie could ask more, the doors below opened. Two men in dark suits entered first, guards. Then he stepped inside. Zade Russo. Young. Devilishly handsome. Dark hair slicked back with expensive precision. His suit was tailored so perfectly it looked like it had been stit

  • The Heiress Contract    Chapter 5: Sabotage

The following day, morning sunlight spilled across the Wilfred estate as Sylvie stepped out of the mansion, hoping for a calm day. But the moment she reached the driveway, she noticed an unusual tension in the air, security guards whispering, cars moving faster than normal, phones ringing nonstop. Ryan was already waiting beside the SUV, arms folded, eyes scanning the perimeter like a machine programmed for threat detection. He didn’t look at her, didn’t greet her, didn’t even blink. "Get in." he said flatly. Sylvie raised a brow. "Wow. Not even a ‘good morning’? You’re evolving." "This is not the morning for jokes." Something in his tone, sharper than usual made her pause. She got inside without another comment. As soon as they reached the company’s main headquarters, everything clicked into place. It was like there was chaos. Employees crowded the lobby, murmuring anxiously. Multiple news vans parked outside the gates. Security was doubled. Phones buzzed from every cor
