Chapter 3

Penulis: Waiting for the Moon
When Calvin hosted a welcome-back cocktail party for Harriet, I was summoned to attend as well.

A few drinks in, one of his friends brought me up on purpose. "Calvin, where's that shadow of yours? You didn't actually catch feelings for her, did you?"

Harriet's smile vanished instantly. "Who are you talking about?"

Calvin took a slow sip of his whiskey, completely nonchalant. "I didn't pry into what you did while you were abroad, so you shouldn't pry into my business here."

Tears welled up in Harriet's eyes. "If you've fallen for someone else, just tell me. I'll get out of your way."

Calvin immediately wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her into a fierce, possessive kiss.

"Anna?" he murmured soothingly against her lips. "She's nothing more than a pet I keep around. How could I ever love someone like her? In this whole world, you're the only woman who belongs at my side."

Harriet finally broke into a triumphant smile, and the rest of the crowd chimed in with supportive laughter.

"Seriously, Harriet," one of the guys laughed. "That chick practically threw herself at Calvin. Remember when she downed a whole bottle of scotch just to help Calvin land that business deal? Ended up in the ICU with a bleeding stomach ulcer!"

"Man, she's desperate," another chimed in. "After you left, Calvin got into street racing to blow off steam. She wanted to keep up with him so badly that she took up racing too. Wrecked her car so hard she broke three ribs and spent three months lying in bed."

"And don't forget the time she showed up a few minutes late at the club," a third guy said, howling with laughter. "Calvin got annoyed and ordered her to lick his loafers clean. And you know what? She got on her knees and did it. Talk about having zero dignity!"

Harriet's expression grew darker and darker with every story.

Finally, she barked, "Bring that whore in here!"

In fact, I had been standing right outside the lounge, listening in silence the entire time.

Calvin hadn't said a word, swirling his whiskey glass. His eyelids drooped, hiding whatever expression was in his eyes.

"She's right outside," he said lazily. "Send her in."

I pushed the door open, meeting several awkward pairs of eyes. The very people who had been ridiculing me seconds ago clearly hadn't realized I was listening from the hallway.

Before anyone could react, Harriet lunged at me, smashing a wine bottle straight over my head.

"You shameless whore!" she screamed, striking me again as glass shattered everywhere. "Do you have an ounce of self-respect? Trying to steal someone else's fiancé!"

Calvin just stood off to the side, watching with an amused smirk.

The scene felt sickeningly familiar, hurling me back to the night my stepfather had raised a glass bottle to beat me. Lisa had stood by and watched just like this.

The only difference was that this time, no one was coming to rescue me.

Agonizing pain throbbed through my scalp as thick, warm blood seeped through my hair, trickling down my face. Dizzy and fighting back waves of nausea, I bowed deeply in front of her.

"I'm sorry, Miss Kelly," I choked out through the pain. "I just love Calvin so much. I can't live without him. I'm trash, I'm pathetic, and I'm sorry."

Harriet raised her hand and delivered a stinging slap. It sent my head spinning, leaving a high-pitched ringing in my ears.

Around us, Calvin's friends burst into raucous laughter.

"Damn, listen to that! She really is the queen of desperate simps!" one of them cheered. "Calvin, you have to teach me. How did you find a lapdog this loyal?"

Her hand throbbing from the slap, Harriet finally paused. But before I could react, she drove the five-inch needle heel of her stiletto straight into my abdomen.

A blinding wave of agony tore through me. My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my abdomen tightly.

Blood pooled rapidly beneath me, staining the marble a violent shade of crimson. I looked up at Calvin, my eyes filled with tears.

A tragic, heartbreaking smile appeared on my bloody lips. I held out my hands to him, showing him my palms drenched in red.

"Calvin, your baby is gone," I said desperately.

I chose to settle down in that quiet coastal town.My days were spent writing novels while studying independently for college entrance exams. I'm sorry. The truth is that I knew everything all along, but I chose to play along anyway.[Maybe your acting was just that convincing, or maybe I was holding onto a selfish, delusional sliver of hope—that over those four years, it wasn't all just an act for you, and that maybe you felt a tiny thread of genuine affection for me.[Never mind. I was fooling myself. I failed you, and I hurt that boy.[Before I met you and before I fell in love with you, I harbored a dee

I had already made peace with dying tonight anyway.Ever since the day I learned of Basil's murder, the sheer, burning desire for revenge was the only thing that kept me going. My own life was never something I cared to save. My body, my unborn baby, my life... they were nothing more than chips I played on the board to win this game.By now, I was already battered beyond recovery, my heart riddled with gaping holes."Using yourself to punish me... it isn't worth it, Anna," Calvin said with a sigh.He looked exhausted, as if he had aged ten years in a moment. His eyes drifted toward the kitchen, landing on the natural gas line I had intentionally left open. But it was already too late.I produced a lighter and flicked the wheel under his horrified gaze. The gas ignited instantly, detonating the room in a blinding roar as flames engulfed everything.I didn't fully understand how I survived. In that split second, it seemed that Calvin had ripped the lighter from my hand and shove

In a way, we were even now.As if sensing something was wrong, Calvin reached for my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. He looked as though he wanted to say something, but whatever was on his mind, he thought better of it.A moment later, I began to feel lightheaded, too, as a strange, heavy odor seemed to thicken the air around us. Calvin pushed himself to his feet, only to sway unsteadily as soon as he stood."I'm feeling dizzy. Did you leave the gas stove on?" he asked. "Let me go check the kitchen.""Calvin, don't go," I said, holding him back.He held my hands and paused. "Okay, I won't go."His voice dripped with tender affection. For a fleeting second, hesitation crept into my heart. But then Basil's face flashed across my mind.Giddy and unsteady, Calvin collapsed back into his chair and pointed weakly at his wine glass. "This wine has a serious kick. I think I'm already drunk."I smiled at him. "Calvin, there's something I need to tell you."He looked up at me, a

Calvin was slumped over my hospital bed, looking pale and gaunt. He was covered in stubble, with dark circles under his eyes. The moment I stirred, he snapped awake, so overwhelmed with excitement that he couldn't form words; he just stared at me blankly. Finally, he reached up and pinched his cheek hard. "Ouch... It's not a dream! Annie, you're really awake!"I forced a smile. "Calvin, I'm awake."He sprinted out of the room to call the doctor. After I was discharged, he brought me back to the cottage.Harriet had been sentenced to prison for aggravated assault and attempted murder.Because the Kelly family held immense wealth and political sway, Calvin had exhausted all his connections, power, and fortune just to put her behind bars. And since he didn't marry Harriet, he was cut off completely—forfeiting every cent of the Holloway family trust and the entire Holloway empire.Calvin carried me through the gate, his eyes shining with starry hope. I looked at the woman bluffing and posturing in front of me, finding the whole spectacle hilarious. If Harriet were truly as confident, she never would have tracked me down in person."Shame? I have none. I love Calvin, and Calvin loves me too," I said evenly. "In a relationship, the third wheel is whoever isn't loved, isn't it?"My words successfully pushed Harriet to the brink. She raised her hand and swung her palm hard toward my face.I didn't dodge, taking the blow head-on. Deep down, I knew she no longer had the unwavering confidence she once possessed. No matter how much Calvin had messed around in the past, he had never abandoned her for another woman. I had figured it out the day I had called him for help.It had been Harriet's birthday party.
