Chapter 1

The agony of August’s rejection was too much. I blacked out under the weight of the pain.

I woke up in my bedroom.

Following the notification from my phone on the nightstand, I reached out in a struggle. The screen’s glare blinded my eyes. There was a new post on Anna Morgart’s social media feed.

A photo showed August Sterling staring at Anna with downcast eyes, his gaze tender.

It was the same look I had longed for through many sleepless nights.

However, I didn’t feel the sting I had expected. Only a wave of hollow composure ran through me.

I was given the Luna title on my eighteenth birthday.

With the Moon Goddess’ blessing, I was named August’s fated mate.

I considered the bond as a gift from the Moon Goddess since my parents had always favored Anna.

Here I thought that I could have a family of my own, a mate who actually cared about me.

Alas, my mate’s heart belonged to Anna as well.

At our first mating ceremony, Anna broke a glass and cut her hand.

Scooping her into his arms, August bolted to the infirmary without so much as a glance at me.

Despite my pleas through mindlink for him to come back, he tore hard into me.

“Sophina Morgart! Anna is your sister! How can you be so selfish when she’s bleeding?”

Little did he know, I was hunched over in excruciating pain from his silent rejection.

The second time, the ritual didn’t go on because Anna had a craving for the pastries in the shop corner.

Many incidents of a similar nature ensued. August was always absent, tending to Anna’s little requests.

The suffering he put me through slowly killed my expectations.

I had long given up on a love that was never meant for me.

A throbbing pain split my head, and I drifted back into a hazy sleep.

Late at night, I was yanked violently out of bed.

I opened my eyes and met August’s burning rage.

“Sophina!” His grip over my wrist was tight, and his voice boomed in the silence of the room. “Anna’s pet is dead. She barely had a bite to eat in the last couple of days. Yet, here you are, sleeping through all this without a care.”

Before, I would have broken down in the face of his accusations, desperately explaining that his rejection was hurting me. I would have begged for even a trace of his affection.

However, he never once believed me or spared me with the slightest bit of care.

I was drained at this point, so I gave him exactly what he wanted.

“I’m sorry.”

My voice was hoarse and rough.

In the faint moonlight through the window, August finally had a good look at my discolored face.

He froze. By the time he spoke again, his voice carried a stiff concern.

“Why didn’t you tell me that you were unwell. Have a good rest. I’ll get you some medicine.”

I closed my eyes.

In the past, I would rejoice over his show of concern. At last, he had noticed me.

Yet now, his empty words stirred nothing within me.

By the time I came to, the nightstand was bare as expected.

I saw neither water nor medicine.

Smiling to myself, I dragged my heavy body down the stairs.

Halfway down, I caught August’s gentle voice coming from the kitchen.

“Careful, it’s hot. Take your time.”

My footsteps halted.

There was August, wearing an apron I’d never seen him touch. He was focused on frying eggs, the way Anna liked them.

Sitting at the table, Anna propped her chin against her arm and smiled.

The intimacy between them was nothing like I had ever encountered before.

My mind wandered back to the time when we were first paired together.

With callous eyes, August said, “Cooking isn’t my thing, and I have no plans to learn.”

In the next five years, I was the one in the apron, in charge of all the meals.

I paid close attention to his tastes, keeping tabs on his every preference.

Even when I winced at the hot, scalding oil on the back of my hand, I never once voiced my pain.

In my mind, the pain meant nothing as long as he savored what I made.

As it turned out, he wasn’t incapable of cooking.

His motivation was simply never for me.

As August cooked up a storm for Anna, I realized the last five years of my life had been a joke.

Since then, my life became simple but fulfilling. I practiced piano during the day, composed at night, and whenever I had free time, I’d sit in on classes at the music academy. My rapid progress earned the old lady’s praise. She would boast to anyone that I was the hardest-working and most gifted student she’d ever met.I simply smiled. It wasn’t about pushing myself. I simply discovered my way in life. Six months later, I entered a small music competition. That night, the music hall was packed. I glanced to a corner, only to see a familiar silhouette. It was August. However, he wasn’t the August I knew. His eyes held guilt and remorse, along with a careful longing I couldn’t quite grasp. This was the look I once dreamed of seeing in his eyes. His feelings were too little too late. Paying no heed to his intense staring, I lowered my gaze and kept playing. As the final note rang out, the audience erupted in applause. By the cheers and standing ovation, I was sud

  • The Hundredth Rejection   Chapter 7

With every detail Anna recounted, August’s chest tightened in pain. Not a single bit of August’s favoritism escaped Anna’s eye. She kept everything in mind. Where did that leave Sophina? August wondered how much she had seen and how much pain she had silently endured.Unable to bear the thought, August ran away. He sat in the garden by himself as emotions ate him up inside. The only thing on his mind was to reach for a cigarette to numb his sensations. However, his lighter was in the bedroom. It had been quite a while, so Anna would have left by now. It never occurred to August that Anna’s malicious voice would echo as he approached the room. “Jeez, why didn’t you just kill Sophina during the abduction? August is obsessed with her now!” “What did you say?” August growled. Extending his arm, he grabbed Anna by the throat with the intent to kill. Anna fought for her life, terrified of dying. “August, it hurts…” Before, August would have pulled her into his embrace

It was bad enough that August had been blind to his own feelings, but he even mistook caring for Anna as love. When he got back, he vowed to do whatever it took to earn Sophina’s forgiveness. Not one to doubt Sophina’s devotion, August was sure that I was just sulking. Once the realization hit, August wasted no time rushing back to the infirmary. Throughout the journey, his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. He thought about ways to apologize, make amends, and make up for lost time. To his dismay, he was greeted by an empty ward instead of Sophina. With the she-wolf he longed for nowhere in sight, August felt the hollow opening in his chest as panic gripped him. He rushed out of the ward and grabbed a passing nurse, squeezing so hard that she yelped in pain. “Where’s Sophina?” His voice shook. “She was too badly injured to be released. You’ll have to answer to me if anything happens to her!” The nurse broke free from his grip in frustration. “Who are you to Sophina?”

The plane touched down in Codar Bay. Holding her phone up, Anna snapped pictures and shared her getaway on social media with enthusiasm. She didn’t look traumatized at all. August stared at her bright smile, his mind elsewhere. Such a smile had never been seen on Sophina’s face in the past five years. August stood corrected. He had seen it. Sophina always beamed during their first year together. She’d meet him with a smile and take his coat as he walked in. A glass of milk was always ready after his long nights at the office. Her cheerful energy never wavered, and she would dive into the kitchen for hours at a passing mention of his cravings.Back then, there was light in Sophina’s eyes. Somewhere in between, all of that changed. August couldn’t put his finger on the exact timeline. However, Sophina grinned less and less until eventually, the smile vanished altogether. Meanwhile, he never bothered to ask why. August had been too busy watching over Anna and keepin

Anna looked up, her eyes sparkling with cautious, calculated curiosity. “I have always wanted a dress like this. August, can I try one on?” She looked at August with care. Sure enough, August would never say no to her. Everything just fell into place. She tried one dress after another while August kept all eyes on her, offering suggestions and straightening out her train at times. The VIP room was filled with their laughter and the staff’s compliments. It was as if Anna were the star of the show all along. I quietly sat in a corner like a spectator through and through. Exhaustion weighed down on me. However, I wasn’t the least bit upset or annoyed by their interaction. I was overcome with boredom, waiting for everything to be over. My presence must have hit August because he grabbed a few gowns and approached me awkwardly. Not that I wanted to hear his ridiculous excuses, I didn’t wait for him to speak. I picked out the plainest dress. The dress wouldn’t be of a

Before August could make sense of his emotions, Anna showed up in tears like a startled Bambi. “I’m sorry, Sophina…” She threw herself at my bedside, her voice choking with sobs. “Had I known you had a milk allergy… It’s all my fault. I nearly killed you…” Anna and I grew up in the same house. It was plausible that she was unaware of my allergy. Only August would believe such a bad lie. Sure enough, he stepped forward and wrapped his arm around Anna’s shoulders tenderly. “Don’t cry, Anna. Sophina isn’t mad at you. Don’t put this on yourself. It wasn’t intentional anyway.” Through her tearful eyes, Anna broke into a smile and held me in a sweet embrace. “Thank you, Sophina. You’re the best.” She leaned in, her voice barely a whisper. “Count yourself lucky! So what if you made it through? You will never mate with August, not on my watch!” This wasn’t news to me. His history of absences and last-minute exits had already spelled everything out. From a young age, I
