The morning after the gala felt like a neon-lit hangover, despite Tristan having only had three glasses of champagne. The adrenaline of walking out on Julian Ravencourt’s arm had carried him through the night, but the cold reality of Tuesday morning was a different beast entirely.

"You’re actually going to do it? Tristan, he’s a literal shark. He eats decorators for breakfast and spits out the bones," Leo said over the phone, his voice crackling with disbelief.

Tristan tucked his chin to hold his phone against his shoulder as he struggled into a slightly oversized, neon-orange polyester vest. "I’m not a decorator today, Leo. I’m 'Express Logistics.' And I’m not being eaten. I’m being persistent."

"There is a very thin line between persistent and 'restraining order,'" Leo warned. "What happened to the 'flavor' and 'substance' thing? You already won! Nathaniel looked like he was going to vomit his own heart when you left with Ravencourt."

"Winning isn't enough," Tristan muttered, adjusting a baseball cap low over his eyes. "Nathaniel needs to see that it wasn't a fluke. I need to get back in that room. Julian didn't say no, Leo. He said it was a dangerous game. That’s basically an invitation in billionaire-speak."

"It’s really not. It’s a warning. A 'Keep Out' sign. A 'Beware of Dog' notice."

"I like dogs," Tristan said, grabbing a cardboard tray of four oversized iced lattes. "I’ll call you when I’m famous or in jail."

"Tristan—!"

Tristan hung up, took a deep breath, and stepped out of his apartment.

The lobby of Ravencourt Towers was a cathedral of glass and cold, grey marble. It smelled like expensive air filtration and silent judgment. Tristan kept his head down, clutching the tray of coffees like a holy relic.

"Delivery for the penthouse suite," Tristan said, pitching his voice an octave lower as he reached the security desk.

The guard didn't even look up from his monitor. "Name?"

"Uh, Ravencourt. It’s a standing order."

The guard paused, his brow furrowing. "Mr. Ravencourt doesn't drink iced lattes. He drinks black coffee. Hot. From a specific bean in Ethiopia that costs more than my car."

Tristan didn't miss a beat. "It’s for the guests. Big meeting. You want to be the guy who makes the board of directors wait for their caffeine fix?"

The guard hesitated, his eyes flicking to the tray. "Sign in. Badge four."

"Thanks. Appreciate it," Tristan mumble-sang, grabbing the clip-on badge and scurrying toward the elevators.

He was halfway across the polished floor, his heart hammering against his ribs, when he saw a flash of silver hair near the VIP bank. Marcus Hollister, Julian’s personal secretary—the gatekeeper of the inner sanctum—was walking toward the elevators with a tablet in hand.

Shit, Tristan thought. If he sees me, I’m dead.

Tristan pivoted sharply, trying to put a large decorative pillar between himself and Marcus. He accelerated, his eyes fixed on the closing doors of a service elevator. He was going to make it. He was—

His toe caught the edge of a hand-woven Persian rug that had no business being that plush.

"Whoa—!"

Tristan’s world tilted. His feet went one way, his torso went another, and the cardboard tray in his hands became a catapult.

"Watch out!" someone yelled.

Tristan hit the floor with a bone-jarring thud. He didn't even feel the impact on his knees because his entire soul was focused on the arc of the four iced lattes currently flying through the air.

Splat.

The sound was wet, heavy, and followed by a silence so profound it felt like the building had lost power. Tristan scrambled to his knees, his cap falling off, only to find himself staring at a pair of hand-stitched Italian leather shoes.

They were covered in caramel drizzle and soy milk.

Tristan’s gaze traveled upward. Past the tailored charcoal trousers—now soaked. Past the silk tie. To the face of Julian Ravencourt.

Julian looked down at his chest. A massive, dripping brown stain blossomed across his white shirt like a Rorschach test of failure. A stray ice cube slid down his lapel and tucked itself into his pocket.

"Oh," Tristan whispered, his voice cracking. "Oh, no."

Marcus Hollister appeared at Julian’s side, his face a mask of pure horror. "Mr. Ravencourt! I—security! Get this man out of here!"

"Wait! Wait, it was an accident!" Tristan scrambled to his feet, reaching into his pocket for a wad of cheap napkins he’d grabbed from the coffee shop. "I can fix it. I’ve got napkins. Look, they’re extra absorbent."

Tristan lunged forward, frantically dabbing at Julian’s chest.

"Don't touch him!" Marcus shrieked.

Julian didn't move. He stood perfectly still, his arms slightly away from his sides, watching Tristan’s frantic hands with a look of detached fascination.

"You’re making it worse," Julian said. His voice was low, vibrating through Tristan’s fingertips. "You’re just rubbing the espresso deeper into the fibers."

Tristan stopped, his hand hovering over Julian’s heart. He looked up, meeting those stormy gray eyes. "I... I was trying to get an appointment."

Julian’s eyebrow arched. "By disguising yourself as a delivery man and assaulting me with a beverage?"

"It wasn't an assault! It was a spill!" Tristan argued, his face heating up to a shade of red that rivaled his orange vest. "And technically, I was trying to avoid your secretary. He’s very intimidating."

Marcus looked like he was about to have an aneurysm. "Sir, I’ll call the police. This is a security breach. He’s the one from the gala—the one who—"

"I know who he is, Marcus," Julian said, his gaze never leaving Tristan’s.

"I just wanted to talk," Tristan said, trying to regain some shred of the confidence he’d had at the St. Regis. "You said the game was dangerous. I thought I’d show you I can handle the heat."

Julian looked down at his ruined, multi-thousand-dollar suit, then back at Tristan’s messy hair and lopsided vest. "And is this your idea of handling the heat? Looking like a traffic cone and smelling like a burnt bean?"

"It’s a bold choice," Tristan countered, a small, desperate spark of his usual wit returning. "Very avant-garde. It’s about 'intrinsic value,' remember? Underneath this coffee, I’m still the guy who walked out of the gala with you."

The elevator dinned, the doors opening behind them. A group of executives stepped out, stopping dead when they saw their CEO covered in latte.

"Mr. Ravencourt?" one of them stammered. "Is everything... alright?"

Julian didn't look at them. He kept his eyes locked on Tristan, a dark, unreadable emotion flickering in the depths of his pupils. The silence stretched until Tristan felt like he was going to vibrate out of his skin.

"Marcus," Julian said quietly.

"Yes, sir? The police are on their way—"

"Cancel them," Julian interrupted. He reached out, his hand wrapping around Tristan’s upper arm. The grip wasn't painful, but it was absolute. "And reschedule the board meeting. Tell them I’ve had a... change of wardrobe."

"Sir?" Marcus gasped.

Julian stepped into the elevator, pulling Tristan in with him. The doors began to slide shut, sealing them away from the gawking crowd in the lobby.

Julian turned to Tristan, leaning in until they were inches apart. The scent of sandalwood was now heavily mixed with vanilla syrup.

"Tell me, Mr. Everhart," Julian murmured, his voice a dangerous purr. "Do you have a death wish, or do you just have a very good lawyer?"

The weight of Julian’s hand on Tristan’s hip felt like a brand, a warm pressure that didn’t vanish even as they reached the edge of the VIP lounge. Tristan felt his pulse thrumming in his throat, his skin prickling where Julian’s thumb continued its slow, rhythmic brush against the velvet of his blazer."I need to wash my face," Tristan whispered, his voice slightly breathless. "The adrenaline is starting to make me twitch."Julian didn't let go immediately. He leaned in, his silver-gray eyes searching Tristan’s for a second too long. "Don't be long. The auctioneer is about to take the stage, and I’d prefer my 'consultant' by my side when the bidding starts.""Five minutes, Jules," Tristan teased, testing the nickname again.Julian’s jaw tightened, a flicker of something—not quite anger, but certainly not indifference—crossing his face. "Go. Before I decide to fine you for over-familiarity."Tristan escaped to the marble-clad sanctuary of the men’s room. He leaned over the sink, splas

Tristan was still wrestling with the zipper of his black velvet blazer when the buzzer to his apartment shrieked, a sound like a dying bird. He checked the time. 7:45 PM."He’s early," Tristan hissed, tripping over a discarded sneaker as he lunged for the intercom. "So much for being the one in control."He buzzed the visitor in and threw a frantic glance around his living room. The 'eclectic' mix of thrifted mid-century chairs, half-finished floor plans, and a literal bicycle hanging from the wall suddenly felt very, very small. A moment later, a heavy knock sounded on his door.Tristan took a breath, smoothed his lapels, and opened it.Julian Ravencourt stood in the hallway like a dark god who had accidentally wandered into a cardboard box. His black-on-black suit was so sharp it looked like it could draw blood. He took one look at Tristan’s entryway and his lip curled in a way that was almost impressive."Is this the residence, or did I accidentally stumble into a storage unit for

The elevator doors hissed shut, sealing the two of them into a box of brushed steel and the cloying scent of caramel-scented disaster. Julian’s hand stayed on the control panel, his finger hovering over the emergency stop button. He pressed it. With a mechanical groan, the lift jolted to a halt between floors."Tell me, Mr. Everhart," Julian murmured, his voice a dangerous purr. "Do you have a death wish, or do you just have a very good lawyer?"Tristan swallowed hard, his heart drumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He looked at the massive coffee stain on Julian’s chest and then up at the man’s glacial eyes. "Neither. I just have a really good eye for branding, and right now? Your brand is tanking."Julian’s eyes narrowed. "You’re standing in a stalled elevator, covered in polyester, having just assaulted a CEO. I’m not sure you’re in a position to give career advice.""It wasn’t an assault! It was a very aggressive delivery," Tristan shot back, trying to channel the same brava

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis was a shimmering cage of crystal chandeliers and whispered scandals. Tristan Everhart adjusted the silk lapels of his midnight-blue tuxedo, his heart fluttering with a mix of champagne bubbles and genuine nerves. Beside him, Nathaniel Westbourne looked every bit the rising star of the financial world—sharp, polished, and terrifyingly handsome."Can you believe it’s been three years, Nat?" Tristan leaned in, his voice low and warm against the roar of the crowd. "It feels like yesterday we were sharing that shitty takeout on your apartment floor."Nathaniel didn’t look at him. His eyes were scanning the room, hunting for someone. "Hm? Yeah. A lot has changed since then, Tristan.""I was thinking," Tristan continued, reaching out to brush a stray hair from Nathaniel’s forehead. "Maybe after the auction, we could slip away? I have a bottle of that vintage Bordeaux you like waiting back at my place."Nathaniel finally turned, but there was no warmth in h
