Chapter 3

作者: Busy But Spotless
Half an hour passed. It was now 3:50 p.m.

Leon finished off the last zombie outside the entrance to Reunis Tower and dragged his exhausted feet inside. Blood coated both him and his baseball bat.

He leaned against the wall to catch his breath and exhaled hard. "God, my right hand hurts after so many swings. This body is too weak."

Without an Awakening Orb to unlock his superpowered genetics, he had relied on pure adrenaline just to take down a dozen zombies.

That came at a cost. By now, Leon had lost almost all his strength. Luckily, he had anticipated this and prepared a few chocolate bars to replenish his energy.

He rested in the corridor until his fatigue eased. Half an hour later, he checked his watch.

It was 4:20 p.m., and 40 minutes remained before the orbs' descent.

The skyscraper had 37 floors, and Leon stood on the ground floor.

He had already tried the elevator earlier. Pressing the buttons did nothing. It must have broken down.

The only way up now was the stairs. He would have to climb all the way to the top in 40 minutes.

Two minutes remained before 5:00 p.m. Camilla's and Jean's stomachs growled in protest.

"Are you hungry?" Camilla asked, fixing her friend with a wide stare.

Jean knew what that meant. She grabbed her phone and began firing off another round of messages.

There was no reply.

Camilla often tried to maintain an air of reserved elegance, but hunger made that effort feel pointless. She bit her lip, hesitated, then whispered, "Jean, do you think he might have… you know… eaten on the way?"

Jean frowned. "What? I know he's a bum, but that would be criminal. At least send our food first before dying like a pig. It's not like we care if he's dead. His only purpose is to deliver food for us. He has no other worth."

They were worried about Leon. Not for his safety, but for whether he could reach them with their food before the zombies did.

"Why don't you call him, Milla?" Jean suggested.

Camilla hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah. Let me try."

Leon picked up within 10 seconds, but his voice sounded cold and annoyed. "What?"

'What kind of attitude is that? Where is the eagerness to please, the subservient tone? I had to push myself to call this loser, and this is what I get for showing him some kindness?' Tears welled in Camilla's eyes. 'Is this what it feels like to fall out of favor after once being the queen of someone's heart?'

Silence lingered on the line.

Leon pulled the phone from his ear and glanced at the screen.

He smirked, thinking, 'The Prettiest Girl on Earth. That's her contact name? God.'

Camilla had wanted to hang up when she felt no warmth or adulation, but her stomach growled and reminded her she had no choice.

"Where are you, Leon? I've been waiting for so long…" she purred, suppressing the urge to gag.

She knew this tactic worked on a horny simp like him. All it took was a wink and a cutesy, girlish tone, and Leon would turn into her most loyal and fearless soldier.

Leon felt his skin crawl. He checked his watch. 'Ten more seconds.'

"I'm close. Just wait for me. I promise I brought plenty of goodies for both of you," he replied, then hung up.

The air above him warped, as if space itself were distorting. A moment later, a black marble materialized and dropped beside his foot without ceremony.

'This's it. The Awakening Orb, the key to changing humanity's fate!' he thought.

Leon crushed the orb between his fingers. Bright red liquid oozed out and ran down his arm like blood. It spread from his wrist through the rest of his body in seconds.

[0001 Leon Reagan

Rank: Low, Tier 1

Awakened Calling: Undead Overlord

Power: 10

Dexterity: 10

Spirit: 10

Constitution: 10

Awakened Skills:

(1) Necromancy (0/10): Summons deathbound warriors. They cannot exceed the summoner's rank.

(2) Undead Hymn: Sings a lullaby for the undead. All undead and spirits within a 330-foot radius receive elemental bonuses. Cooldown: 1 hour.]

It was done.

Leon stared at his code: 0001. He was the first Awakened human among the 1,000 orbs in Reunis. On top of that, he was the Undead Overlord.

The realization stunned him. He had expected to awaken as he had in his last life, like Logan Clayton, as an (SS) Six-Winged Fallen Angel. Instead, he had obtained an (SSS) Calling.

In his past life, only the top three Awakened in the world had (SSS) Callings. Now he was one of them.

His rank read "Low, Tier 1," the default for all newly Awakened humans. It marked the threshold between mortal and Awakened, even if Tier 1 stood at the very bottom.

There were nine ranks in total: Low, Amateur, Mid, High, Master, Epic, Legendary, Mythic, and Divine. Each rank had four tiers.

The gap between ranks was immense. In his last life, Leon had been an (A) Demon Hunter. He had endured countless trials and gained rare privileges that let him push past certain limits tied to his Calling's grade, yet he had never risen beyond Legendary Tier 2. That had placed him tenth on the global leadership board.

Everyone above him had been at least Legendary Tier 4. Some had reached Mythic.

This time, with the (SSS) Undead Overlord, Leon would shatter every limit placed on him and rise to the top of the board.

He would reach Divine rank and kill the gods.

The gods had treated humanity as playthings long enough. It was time for a mortal man to kill them.

"You want me, boy? Hahaha! The folly of youth is an incredible thing! But you can't handle a mommy like me, darling." Mary laughed, even more delighted. "I bite hard. I might even eat you."Leon said nothing. Fury had consumed him so completely that words no longer mattered. The glare he fixed on her looked as though he wanted to tear Mary apart."Hmph, you're not like the others, are you? I bet you've already Awakened too," Mary sneered knowingly. "Unfortunately, I doubt you can do anything to me. Not even Marco can!"That snapped Leon out of it. Mary Bogart was the queen of Reunis's criminal underworld, the ringleader behind the city's sex trade, both legitimate and illicit. Naturally, her status stood equal to Marco's.'This is insane. Reunis Tower is home to the most influential figures in the entire city, yet not a single one of them possesses an ounce of decency.' Leon was beginning to think that immense wealth, luxurious living, and unchecked hedonism were fundamentally incompatible with human morality.Since the electricity was still running, the room remained cold enough to function as storage. Its interior, however, was far beyond ghastly. Five chefs, or rather butchers, occupied the room. The rest of the floor was covered with "food."Some of them were still alive. Some barely clung to life. Some were already dead. Every single one of them had been tied up like livestock, with pieces of flesh carved from their bodies.Leon had never believed the rumor in his previous life. He simply could not imagine society desce

The elevator doors opened onto the 14th floor. Leon immediately heard a prerecorded welcome message."Welcome home, my lovely Lady Hanna!"The voice was male and gentle. It was probably the owner of the unit, while "Hanna" was likely the mistress of the household.Leon stepped forward and nearly choked on the stench of blood, rotten meat, and grilled flesh. The unholy combination could send chills down anyone's spine.Somewhere in the distance, a cat purred. Then a woman's voice rang out. "Can't the three of you move any faster? If you let my kitty starve, you're all gonna regret ever being born!"Leon frowned. He disliked both the way she spoke and the shrill pitch of her voice."Patience, Madam Bogart! I'm carving a nice slab right now!""Aaahh! You motherfucking maneaters! Kill me instead! I hope all of you burn in hell!""Stop squealing like pigs! You should feel honored to become food for our ma'am!"It sounded like there were around six people inside the room. More impor

The knife clattered to the floor. Marco tried to draw his gun, but he was slower than Leon."Boss—""Don't come any closer!" Leon barked, tightening his arm around Marco's neck before the man's underlings could reach them Marco's face turned bright red."H-Hold up, man, let's not g-get too heated… T-Tell me what you want, and I'll do it!" Marco coughed out between strained breaths."I don't want anything from you. I just want you to answer my questions," Leon said with a chuckle before tossing Marco to the floor like a piece of trash and swiping his gun in one smooth motion. Then he shouted toward Noah in the distance, "Hey, where do you think you're going? I haven't even thanked you for your hospitality yet! Your wine was truly exquisite!"Noah immediately dropped to his knees and started slapping himself. "I-I'm sorry, King! I didn't mean to do that to you! I'm sorry! He made me do it! I can't do anything against him. He's got a gun!""You piece of shit! I never told you to

There were two sides to everything. No matter how bright a light burned or how far it spread, there would always be places it failed to reach. No matter how good a person seemed, darkness always lurked somewhere beneath the surface.Logan might not have been the wisest or kindest ruler of the city in Leon's past life, but he still had a reputation to maintain. A mayor simply couldn't afford to be caught doing certain things. However, criminal syndicates had no problem handling those things for him. The largest of them all belonged to Marco. Now, "Marco" was hardly a unique name. Leon had probably met several Marcos throughout his life. But the moment he saw this man in person, any lingering doubt vanished.Rumor had it Marco had already been a gangster before the apocalypse began. Some even claimed that 70% of the city's properties fell under one of Marco's business ventures.A few days before the apocalypse, Marco had started investing in illegal firearm development as a calcula

Noah hurled his plate to the floor in a burst of rage, and the loud clang echoed through the room. "Fuck that son of a bitch! He almost died to some goddamn zombies like a pussy, and he still thought he could order me around?! If it weren't for the gun he owns, I would've snapped him in half like a twig!"His underlings watched the barely touched, juicy rib hit the floor and swallowed hungrily. Noah was clearly not a good boss. He might throw them food from time to time, but that did not mean he gave them anything decent to eat.Leon heard everything. He could even piece together who they were talking about. The zombie that could speak had to be the Owl. The "Marco" they mentioned sounded familiar too. Leon must have heard of him in his previous life. However, that four-headed zombie gave Leon a very bad feeling.Noah took a deep breath, let out a sigh, and started barking orders. "You! You! And you too! Bring that prick with us. We're going to see him now!""Um, Boss, what if he'
