Chapter 4

作者: Busy But Spotless
Leon could not contain his excitement over his newfound powers. These were true (SSS) Skills.

Through Necromancy, he could summon deathbound warriors at least at Low Tier 1 or at the peak of Amateur Tier 4. Before zombies learned to consume one another and evolve, even the most dangerous among them capped at Amateur Tier 1.

In other words, this power already placed Leon in a dominant position in the apocalypse. Even better, the skill's cap would continue to rise alongside his own level.

Undead Hymn was just as overpowered. It allowed Leon to enhance the already high-level deathbound warriors he summoned, pushing their impressive stats even further.

With abilities like these, he could dethrone the Zombie King and crown himself ruler.

He let out a long, cathartic breath as the full extent of his gains settled in. Then he muttered, "Arise."

A spell formation adorned with skeletal motifs materialized beside him, glowing with an eerie green light. The air was filled with the distant howls of underworld creatures. A silhouette began to take shape at the center.

The green light faded, and the afternoon sun illuminated the figure Leon had summoned.

A humanoid skeleton warrior stood before him, roughly 6'5" tall. Two flickering green flames burned within its eye sockets. It held a greatsword and remained perfectly still.

[Skeleton Blade Warrior (Low, Tier 2): A fallen sword-wielding warrior that still retains a drive to win every battle. The lowest-level soldier in an undead army.

Strength: 20

Speed: 20

Spirit: 20

Constitution: 20

Skill: None]

Eight more skeleton blade warriors appeared one after another. Leon assumed this was his current limit until a towering silhouette began to form within the circle, this time surrounded by vibrant, shifting colors.

A skeleton knight emerged atop a towering skeletal horse, a skull dangling from its javelin. Pale green flames flickered in its eye sockets.

[Skeleton Knight Captain (Amateur, Tier 2): A low-level captain of the undead army with an even stronger drive to fight and far greater durability.

Strength: 70

Speed: 70

Spirit: 70

Constitution: 70

Skill: Charge: When leading a team, all members receive double stat boosts.]

Leon felt weak in the knees from sheer exhilaration. Their ranks alone were already overwhelming for the current stage of the apocalypse, but Charge functioned as a group buff. If he enhanced them first with Undead Hymn and then activated Charge, their stats would nearly quadruple.

50 points of Strength could surge to 200, alongside multiplied elemental effects. At present, there were only 100 or 200 Amateur Tier 2 zombies in total. With both buffs active, the skeleton knight could crush them with ease.

Leon gasped at his fortune.

At that moment, his phone rang, intrusive and unwelcome.

Camilla was about to press him further when he answered, "I'm coming. I'll be there very soon."

He ended the call immediately. There was no need to spoil the surprise. This would be the most unforgettable day of their lives.

He glanced at the 10 undead units under his command and gave his order. "Clear out the zombies until we reach the ground floor."

Before reaching the roof of Reunis Tower, Leon had nearly exhausted himself clearing zombies from the corridors. He had come close to injury several times, saved only by his makeshift protective gear. Plenty of zombies still lurked inside the rooms throughout the tower.

Before awakening, killing zombies yielded no rewards. For those who had Awakened, however, each kill granted EXP. Once zombies began attacking and consuming one another, triggering their evolution, there was also a rare chance of obtaining an orb.

The skeleton knight took command and led the squad in systematically clearing each floor.

While zombies posed a real threat to humans, they were nearly harmless against the skeleton warriors. The undead cut through them with ease, slicing them apart as if in a game of Fruit Ninja. Zombies could only bite or infect, and bites caused negligible damage to skeletons, while infection had no effect on the already dead.

[A Skeleton Blade Warrior defeated a no-level zombie. EXP +5.]

[The Skeleton Knight Captain defeated a no-level zombie. EXP +3.]

The EXP gains were minimal due to the zombies' low level, but steady grinding could still yield results for the blade warriors.

After some time, Leon noticed a discrepancy. The skeleton knight and the blade warriors gained different amounts of EXP. The knight's rank was too high to benefit from fighting such weak enemies. As such, Leon recalled it and allowed the blade warriors to continue.

Soon, Leon and his undead squad reached the 18th floor. Camilla and Jean were somewhere below.

Reunis Tower had poor sound insulation. With his enhanced hearing, Leon could make out their conversation clearly.

"He's still not here, Milla. You don't think he's just messing with you, right?" Jean said.

Camilla's insecurity flared. "That's impossible. He's always done everything I asked… Maybe he's just…"

She paused, then shifted abruptly. "Whatever. We don't need that useless simp. Logan's on his way. He'll bring us food, so who cares if that wimp doesn't show up?

"And if that coward actually backs out of bringing us food, I'll take Logan to his house and raid his pantry. We'll eat everything and then throw him to the zombies. That's what he gets for making me wait this long."

"You want me, boy? Hahaha! The folly of youth is an incredible thing! But you can't handle a mommy like me, darling." Mary laughed, even more delighted. "I bite hard. I might even eat you."Leon said nothing. Fury had consumed him so completely that words no longer mattered. The glare he fixed on her looked as though he wanted to tear Mary apart."Hmph, you're not like the others, are you? I bet you've already Awakened too," Mary sneered knowingly. "Unfortunately, I doubt you can do anything to me. Not even Marco can!"That snapped Leon out of it. Mary Bogart was the queen of Reunis's criminal underworld, the ringleader behind the city's sex trade, both legitimate and illicit. Naturally, her status stood equal to Marco's.'This is insane. Reunis Tower is home to the most influential figures in the entire city, yet not a single one of them possesses an ounce of decency.' Leon was beginning to think that immense wealth, luxurious living, and unchecked hedonism were fundamentally incompatible with human morality.Since the electricity was still running, the room remained cold enough to function as storage. Its interior, however, was far beyond ghastly. Five chefs, or rather butchers, occupied the room. The rest of the floor was covered with "food."Some of them were still alive. Some barely clung to life. Some were already dead. Every single one of them had been tied up like livestock, with pieces of flesh carved from their bodies.Leon had never believed the rumor in his previous life. He simply could not imagine society desce

The elevator doors opened onto the 14th floor. Leon immediately heard a prerecorded welcome message."Welcome home, my lovely Lady Hanna!"The voice was male and gentle. It was probably the owner of the unit, while "Hanna" was likely the mistress of the household.Leon stepped forward and nearly choked on the stench of blood, rotten meat, and grilled flesh. The unholy combination could send chills down anyone's spine.Somewhere in the distance, a cat purred. Then a woman's voice rang out. "Can't the three of you move any faster? If you let my kitty starve, you're all gonna regret ever being born!"Leon frowned. He disliked both the way she spoke and the shrill pitch of her voice."Patience, Madam Bogart! I'm carving a nice slab right now!""Aaahh! You motherfucking maneaters! Kill me instead! I hope all of you burn in hell!""Stop squealing like pigs! You should feel honored to become food for our ma'am!"It sounded like there were around six people inside the room. More impor

The knife clattered to the floor. Marco tried to draw his gun, but he was slower than Leon."Boss—""Don't come any closer!" Leon barked, tightening his arm around Marco's neck before the man's underlings could reach them Marco's face turned bright red."H-Hold up, man, let's not g-get too heated… T-Tell me what you want, and I'll do it!" Marco coughed out between strained breaths."I don't want anything from you. I just want you to answer my questions," Leon said with a chuckle before tossing Marco to the floor like a piece of trash and swiping his gun in one smooth motion. Then he shouted toward Noah in the distance, "Hey, where do you think you're going? I haven't even thanked you for your hospitality yet! Your wine was truly exquisite!"Noah immediately dropped to his knees and started slapping himself. "I-I'm sorry, King! I didn't mean to do that to you! I'm sorry! He made me do it! I can't do anything against him. He's got a gun!""You piece of shit! I never told you to

There were two sides to everything. No matter how bright a light burned or how far it spread, there would always be places it failed to reach. No matter how good a person seemed, darkness always lurked somewhere beneath the surface.Logan might not have been the wisest or kindest ruler of the city in Leon's past life, but he still had a reputation to maintain. A mayor simply couldn't afford to be caught doing certain things. However, criminal syndicates had no problem handling those things for him. The largest of them all belonged to Marco. Now, "Marco" was hardly a unique name. Leon had probably met several Marcos throughout his life. But the moment he saw this man in person, any lingering doubt vanished.Rumor had it Marco had already been a gangster before the apocalypse began. Some even claimed that 70% of the city's properties fell under one of Marco's business ventures.A few days before the apocalypse, Marco had started investing in illegal firearm development as a calcula

Noah hurled his plate to the floor in a burst of rage, and the loud clang echoed through the room. "Fuck that son of a bitch! He almost died to some goddamn zombies like a pussy, and he still thought he could order me around?! If it weren't for the gun he owns, I would've snapped him in half like a twig!"His underlings watched the barely touched, juicy rib hit the floor and swallowed hungrily. Noah was clearly not a good boss. He might throw them food from time to time, but that did not mean he gave them anything decent to eat.Leon heard everything. He could even piece together who they were talking about. The zombie that could speak had to be the Owl. The "Marco" they mentioned sounded familiar too. Leon must have heard of him in his previous life. However, that four-headed zombie gave Leon a very bad feeling.Noah took a deep breath, let out a sigh, and started barking orders. "You! You! And you too! Bring that prick with us. We're going to see him now!""Um, Boss, what if he'
