Chapter 5

Penulis: Busy But Spotless
Leon chuckled to himself after hearing them. He was not upset. Who would be upset with people he knew would die soon?

Someone knocked on the door to Room 1703.

The two women exchanged looks.

"Is that bum finally here?" Jean asked.

"Maybe?" the other replied.

Their suspicion cleared when the visitor called out, "Open the door, Milla! It's Logan!"

Logan Clayton's name was music to Camilla's ears. Her eyes lit up, and her excitement wiped the disgust from her face as she hurried to the door.

She opened it, saw the man she had been waiting for, and threw her arms around him. "Loggy! I was so scared!"

Logan felt her smooth skin brush against his. The contact thrilled him.

He patted her soft back and spoke in a soothing tone. "Hey, it's okay. I'm here now. From now on, you don't need to worry, all right?"

Camilla looked up at him, then quickly looked away, feigning embarrassment. "Mm-kay."

They held each other tightly.

Jean clenched her teeth hard enough to crack them. Logan was the school's hottest guy. She had nursed a crush on him for a long time and had often told her best friend all about him.

Camilla had not cared about him at first. After listening to Jean for a while, she grew interested. They started spending time together, and soon they became close.

Leon? Who was he, other than a simp at her beck and call? At best, he was a glorified delivery man.

At that moment, Jean truly resented her so-called best friend. Camilla had ignored her the instant Logan arrived. She had not spared a single glance for the loyal, unremarkable girl who was supposed to be her closest friend.

With friends like these, who needed enemies?

Logan scanned the room. His expression darkened when he saw no food in the living area, only the trash it had left behind.

Anger rose in him. He had come all the way here and risked his life because he had gone two days without food after finishing his own supply. If Camilla had not told him there was still food here, he would never have come.

Now all he saw was garbage that reminded him of what he lacked. He was close to losing his temper, but what if they did have food? He could not risk offending Camilla while that remained a possibility.

"Milla?" he began, forcing a smile as he held his irritation in check. "I thought you mentioned something about food."

He paused, aware he might have revealed too much.

"I mean, I was wondering if you have enough supplies," he added quickly. "If not, I could go retrieve the food I asked my friends to store for me earlier."

It was an obvious lie. Logan had no friends. No one would hold on to food for someone else in an apocalypse when supplies were already scarce. He was testing them. If they said they had none, he would leave at once. Before that, he intended to squeeze whatever value he could from them.

Camilla forced an embarrassed smile. "Oh, we'll have food soon. Someone's on his way to deliver it. Just wait, Loggy!"

She discreetly took out her phone and called Leon.

Leon saw Camilla's name on the screen and smirked. "Those two really do deserve each other."

He turned to his squad. They had cleared the entire floor of zombies without taking any damage.

"Time to move to the next floor," he said.

The zombies on the 17th floor were agitated and alert. Logan's arrival had snapped them out of their usual stupor. They wasted no time and surged toward Leon and his undead squad.

It did not take long for the three of them to hear growls and bellows echo through the corridors. It took even less time for all three to pretend they had heard nothing.

Camilla and Jean exchanged a worried look. Could Leon be at the center of the commotion? If so, what would happen to the food he had brought? He could die if he wanted, but the food had to stay. They would never forgive him if he died before handing it over.

This floor held more zombies than any Leon had cleared so far. It had started with an average number, but Logan had not been discreet when he dashed into the women's apartment. He had escaped through sheer luck. Now the entire floor paid the price as zombies flooded the corridors.

Leon cast a quick glance ahead. He could see only the tops of heads packed tightly together as the undead milled about. There were at least 50 of them, and they were already lunging at him.

'God, this is exciting. Just look at all these EXP targets,' he thought.

If each one yielded 5 EXP, then at least 250 points were within reach. That exceeded the total from more than a dozen floors they had cleared before. It was a haul.

The zombies clawed at the bony arms of Leon's undead warriors. Their attacks did almost no damage, but that did not make things easy for the skeletons. The corridor was too cramped for wide swings, which limited their movement.

For a moment, the battle stalled in a tense impasse. Then Leon cast Undead Hymn. The skeleton warriors surged with power as their stats spiked. Each swing of their blades cut down several zombies at once. Blood sprayed in thick arcs, coating the warriors in red.

The floor fell silent in less than three minutes. The skeleton warriors took position beside Leon like loyal sentries as he moved down the corridor, stepping over headless, decaying corpses.

Camilla and Jean listened as the noise outside died away.

After a brief hesitation, they eased the door open and peered into the corridor to check if it was safe.

They caught sight of Leon just as he approached, still flanked by his undead soldiers.

Their gazes met.

"You want me, boy? Hahaha! The folly of youth is an incredible thing! But you can't handle a mommy like me, darling." Mary laughed, even more delighted. "I bite hard. I might even eat you."Leon said nothing. Fury had consumed him so completely that words no longer mattered. The glare he fixed on her looked as though he wanted to tear Mary apart."Hmph, you're not like the others, are you? I bet you've already Awakened too," Mary sneered knowingly. "Unfortunately, I doubt you can do anything to me. Not even Marco can!"That snapped Leon out of it. Mary Bogart was the queen of Reunis's criminal underworld, the ringleader behind the city's sex trade, both legitimate and illicit. Naturally, her status stood equal to Marco's.'This is insane. Reunis Tower is home to the most influential figures in the entire city, yet not a single one of them possesses an ounce of decency.' Leon was beginning to think that immense wealth, luxurious living, and unchecked hedonism were fundamentally incompatible with human morality.Since the electricity was still running, the room remained cold enough to function as storage. Its interior, however, was far beyond ghastly. Five chefs, or rather butchers, occupied the room. The rest of the floor was covered with "food."Some of them were still alive. Some barely clung to life. Some were already dead. Every single one of them had been tied up like livestock, with pieces of flesh carved from their bodies.Leon had never believed the rumor in his previous life. He simply could not imagine society desce

The elevator doors opened onto the 14th floor. Leon immediately heard a prerecorded welcome message."Welcome home, my lovely Lady Hanna!"The voice was male and gentle. It was probably the owner of the unit, while "Hanna" was likely the mistress of the household.Leon stepped forward and nearly choked on the stench of blood, rotten meat, and grilled flesh. The unholy combination could send chills down anyone's spine.Somewhere in the distance, a cat purred. Then a woman's voice rang out. "Can't the three of you move any faster? If you let my kitty starve, you're all gonna regret ever being born!"Leon frowned. He disliked both the way she spoke and the shrill pitch of her voice."Patience, Madam Bogart! I'm carving a nice slab right now!""Aaahh! You motherfucking maneaters! Kill me instead! I hope all of you burn in hell!""Stop squealing like pigs! You should feel honored to become food for our ma'am!"It sounded like there were around six people inside the room. More impor

The knife clattered to the floor. Marco tried to draw his gun, but he was slower than Leon."Boss—""Don't come any closer!" Leon barked, tightening his arm around Marco's neck before the man's underlings could reach them Marco's face turned bright red."H-Hold up, man, let's not g-get too heated… T-Tell me what you want, and I'll do it!" Marco coughed out between strained breaths."I don't want anything from you. I just want you to answer my questions," Leon said with a chuckle before tossing Marco to the floor like a piece of trash and swiping his gun in one smooth motion. Then he shouted toward Noah in the distance, "Hey, where do you think you're going? I haven't even thanked you for your hospitality yet! Your wine was truly exquisite!"Noah immediately dropped to his knees and started slapping himself. "I-I'm sorry, King! I didn't mean to do that to you! I'm sorry! He made me do it! I can't do anything against him. He's got a gun!""You piece of shit! I never told you to

There were two sides to everything. No matter how bright a light burned or how far it spread, there would always be places it failed to reach. No matter how good a person seemed, darkness always lurked somewhere beneath the surface.Logan might not have been the wisest or kindest ruler of the city in Leon's past life, but he still had a reputation to maintain. A mayor simply couldn't afford to be caught doing certain things. However, criminal syndicates had no problem handling those things for him. The largest of them all belonged to Marco. Now, "Marco" was hardly a unique name. Leon had probably met several Marcos throughout his life. But the moment he saw this man in person, any lingering doubt vanished.Rumor had it Marco had already been a gangster before the apocalypse began. Some even claimed that 70% of the city's properties fell under one of Marco's business ventures.A few days before the apocalypse, Marco had started investing in illegal firearm development as a calcula

Noah hurled his plate to the floor in a burst of rage, and the loud clang echoed through the room. "Fuck that son of a bitch! He almost died to some goddamn zombies like a pussy, and he still thought he could order me around?! If it weren't for the gun he owns, I would've snapped him in half like a twig!"His underlings watched the barely touched, juicy rib hit the floor and swallowed hungrily. Noah was clearly not a good boss. He might throw them food from time to time, but that did not mean he gave them anything decent to eat.Leon heard everything. He could even piece together who they were talking about. The zombie that could speak had to be the Owl. The "Marco" they mentioned sounded familiar too. Leon must have heard of him in his previous life. However, that four-headed zombie gave Leon a very bad feeling.Noah took a deep breath, let out a sigh, and started barking orders. "You! You! And you too! Bring that prick with us. We're going to see him now!""Um, Boss, what if he'
