Chapter Forty-Three

Liana’s POV

The hall glowed with gold.

Hundreds of candles burned above us in crystal chandeliers, their light softening the marble and silver. Laughter rippled down the long tables, but it was a brittle kind the sort that masked calculation behind smiles.

Every noble in the room wanted something.

Some wanted to be seen. Some wanted to hide.

I had stopped wanting long ago.

Except for him.

Kael sat at the head of the table, the crown gleaming against the dark of his hair. When I approached, the conversation dimmed. The silk of my gown caught the candlelight, and I felt every eye track its slow shimmer.

He rose before I reached him.

A small, measured courtesy — meant to appear like gallantry but thick with something else.

Something possessive.

“My lady,” he said softly, loud enough for the court to hear, “you honour the room simply by entering it.”

I lowered my head, my voice calm.

“And Your Majesty dishonours me by making me wait to speak.”

A few courtiers froze. Th

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Eyes That Saw

Chapter SeventyLiana’s POVI didn’t know how long I sat there. The candles were still burning, but the light had shifted, softer, lower, as if the flames themselves were tired of watching me.My head rested against my knees. I hadn’t moved since he left. The marble beneath me had gone from cold to numbing, and my skin ached where the jewels pressed against my collarbone. The hall was silent except for the faint hiss of candle wicks. It felt endless. Then, somewhere behind me, a door creaked.I froze.Soft footsteps echoed through the room. Careful. Hesitant.“My lady?”The voice was quiet, unsure.I turned slowly, my hair falling over my shoulder. A young servant stood near the entrance, holding a silver tray that trembled in his hands. His eyes widened when he saw me sitting on the floor, my gown pooled around me like spilt blood. He didn’t know what to do. No one ever saw me like this. No one was meant to.“Leave,” I said softly. He hesitated. “His Majesty asked that I”“Go.”The w

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Silence After

Chapter Sixty-NineLiana’s POVThe door closed, and the sound of it echoed like a final command.I stayed where I was. Kneeling. Bare hands pressed against the cold marble floor. My body trembled from the inside out, not from fear but from something heavier. The air didn’t move. It felt trapped between the walls, warm where I breathed it in and colder where it touched my skin. My palms were slick against the marble, the faint sheen of sweat catching the candlelight as I tried to breathe through the silence. Every inhale scraped against my throat, rough, shaky. The room was empty now, yet I could still feel their eyes on me the way they had stared, the way they had whispered when Kael made me kneel. My cheeks burned even though no one was there to see.I wanted to move. I wanted to stand. But my legs wouldn’t listen.Every breath felt too loud. The air was thick, carrying the scent of wax, smoke, and his cologne. It clung to me like a reminder that I belonged here, under his rule, unde

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    Before the Court

Chapter Sixty-EightLiana’s POVThe hall was already full when I walked in.Every face turned toward me. Every whisper carried my name. The air was heavy with perfume and curiosity, the kind that stuck to skin like heat. My heart wouldn’t slow down, not even when I forced my chin up.Kael sat at the centre of the throne room, a dark figure on gold. His hand rested on the armrest, fingers still, eyes colder than stone. The moment his gaze found me, the noise in the room faded.I wanted to look away, but couldn’t.The silk of my gown felt too thin. The neckline is too deep. The jewels he made me wear caught the light with every step, drawing eyes to the curve of my chest. It was his doing. Every part of it.When I stopped before him, I lowered my head just enough to show respect. My voice came out soft, almost breaking.“My king.”His reply was quiet, but it carried across the room.“Lift your head.”I did.The tension between us was sharp enough to cut through the silence. I could feel

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Morning After

Chapter Sixty-SevenLiana’s POVThe first light of morning slipped through the curtains, soft and pale, brushing against my face like it wanted to wake me gently.I hadn’t really slept. The night had stretched on forever, filled with memories I didn’t want to relive the sound of his voice, the feel of that ribbon between my fingers, the way my body had betrayed me even as my mind screamed to resist. The red silk still lay on the table where I’d left it.It caught the sunlight now, glowing faintly, mocking me with its quiet beauty.I sat up slowly. My head ached. My throat felt dry. The air in the room was heavy with the faint scent of smoke and wine from the feast. I ran my hand through my tangled hair and tried to breathe. The knock came before I could rise.Soft. Steady. Familiar. My chest tightened.I knew that sound too well. The door opened before I could answer, and he stepped inside as if the space already belonged to him.Kael.The King.He looked like he hadn’t slept either,

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    After He Left

Chapter Sixty-SixLiana’s POVThe feast ended hours ago.The music had faded, the laughter gone. The candles had burned low, their flames trembling against the walls like they were afraid of the dark.I sat alone in my chambers, still wearing the red gown. The silk was wrinkled now, the hem stained faintly with wine where someone had brushed past me. My hair had fallen loose from its pins. My lips still felt dry from where I’d bitten them to keep from speaking. The silence was heavy. It filled every corner of the room, thick and sharp, pressing against my chest. I could still hear the echo of his voice the way he said my name before the court, the way he leaned close enough for only me to hear his words. He had done it again.Without touching me beyond what was seen, without a single threat, he had made me yield in front of them all.I hated how easily he did it. I hated that part of me that wanted him to.My reflection in the mirror looked like someone else someone I didn’t trust. My
